I live in Brazil, in middle est city, Brasília but I was born in a city of south of Brazil, Blumenau, where has a big German colonization.

Oh gosh, yes! Your grandma and I correspond on occasion! I've really enjoyed connecting with her. We've had some good correspondence over the last few years. Nice to "meet" you, too! A slight correction to the above info, though. George Mette was August's father, although August also had a brother named George (and Henry, and others). It's confusing. I continue to look for more info about the Mette family but there are few new resources that I've been able to find. Have you found any good tidbits?

I am from August's brother George's line. After talking with my mom about this tonight trying to get the names correct, we discovered that you might have contacted my grandmother Marilynn Mette several times. You may already have this information, but here goes. My father is

Sorry this has taken me so long to respond! From everything I've seen, the Mette spelling is consistently spelled this way. I've followed the original family from Baltimore to Chicago around 1870, but I don't know of anyone marrying someone with the first name of Kassel. What was your mother's first name and do you know the first names of her grandparents' parents?

Sorry -- Just now reading this! No, they came to Chicago from Baltimore, MD, although I'm aware of Mettes living in and around the Central Illinois area and then also in the St. Louis area. Surprisingly, there is a lot of repeating of the same first names, and the ones in St. Louis were also in the bottling business. My guess is there IS some connection, but I haven't discovered it yet. I believe the Central IL Mettes were farmers. Is that right? Were they from Hesse Cassel, Germany?

are you looking for Mette with that exact spelling? My mother is a Methe from Oak Park her grand parents are Methe and Kassel...

She doesn't have much info on her family. I never heard of a bottle co.

Hi, My Mothers maiden name was Ceceilia Mette, Her Father,s name was Benjamin Mette. I am told there are many Mette's in Quebec.I don,t know too much more.

William D. Steinkamp's father was a sailor who sailed out of Bremen, Germany. His name was John Peter Steinkamp. Williams mother ws Magdalena Johanna Hasselbusch born 1835 in Hanover, Germany amd died in 1890 in Honcut, Butte County, Califormia. John and Magdelena are buried in Honcut Cemetery. Honcut Cemetery is located northwest of La Porte Road near Honcut surrounded by a fence and locked gate on private property. It is run down and owners do not allow access.

John was a sailor working out of Bremen starting when he was 15 in 1845. The last entry for John in the Bremen Sailors Registry was a muster dated March 27, 1848 on the ship Livonia for New York. This was the last entry and since I can find no immigration record, he may have jumped ship in New York in 1848 and headed for California. Bremen Staatsarchiv. 4.24-E.7 musterungslisten der schiffe gefuhrt vom Bremen wesserschout 1837-Mai 1873

Family information from a family bible in the possession of Mrs. Viola Webster of San Leandro about 1962. Viola Webster was Daniel Best's grandaughter.

"The info I have on the Steinkamps is very sketchy; John & Johanna Steinkamp, of Germany, had 6 children: John Jr., md Emma (---); Helena md (---) Hazelbush; William md Ella (---); Walter; Meta Johanna md Daniel Best [my 2nd gg uncle & had 7 kids; and Valentina. I got this info from a Bible in possession of Mrs. Viola Webster of San Leandro about 40 years ago. She was Daniel Best's granddaughter.

John was listed in the 1870 census as living in Parks Bar Twp., Yuba County, CA.

The book Foreign Born Voters of Californina, 1872 listed John as 37 years old, having immigrated from Bremen, Germany, and naturalized April 17, 1868 in Yuba County, CA.

John was listed in the 1877 Great Register living in Linda Twp. Later Registers after 1879 do not contain his name. He must have moved out of Yuba County.

John was listed as a hotel keeper in Ophir (Oroville), Butte County, CA in the 1880 census. His wife's name was listed as Elizabeth M. in the 1880 census. Meta and Valentina were not listed. They may have lived away from home. In the same census, Meta (living in Washington) listed her parents birthplace as BRA... (probably Bremen ).

Registered to vote 19 June 1884. 54 years old, born in Germany. Naturalized 16 April 1868 in Yuba County Court. Hotelkeeper in Honcut. Honcut is south of Oroville and is a very tiny town.

John was registered as eligible for military service in 1871 according to Yuba County records.

John was enumerated in the 1900 census in Butte County (Honcut Twp.), CA with his father-in-law John Hasselbusch. He was listed as being born in Germany in July 1830 and having immigrated in 1852.

California State Death Index Number 9831.

I have more information on the Steinkamp's.the Hasselbusch's, the Mette's and the Best's.

Hello,
We are looking for the parents of my wifes Grandfather. John Anthony Mette, b 2 Jun, 1876, d 9 Mar, 1955.
My wife's father's name is Norman J.
John A was born in Detroit from memory of family storys. Census data for 1900, 1910 is inconclusive. Nothing in 1880 data.
If memory serves us right, John's parents were from Prussia.
Any help or leads appreciated.

All the research I've done on the Mettes locates them in Germany. I don't know anything about the Jewish part, though.

I've been doing some extensive research on the Mette family but would like contact with anyone who has information on any Mette that lived/lives in the Chicago area. August Mette established the Mette Bottling Company in 1872 (born in Hessen Kassel). My uncle William and great great grandfather Michael Mette worked there as well. Can anyone help?? Other family names were George, Henry, Louis, Lottie, and Bernhardine.

My great grandmother was Kattie Catherine Mette born 1876 her parents were Henry Mette and Mary Baker. They are listed as from Germany. They lived in southern Wayne Co and Norhtern Monroe Co

you may be a member of our Mettee family- there are several variations on spelling- if so, you are descendents of leonard and julien mette or mettee, of prussia-born in alsace region france, went to work for frederick the great/prussia-emigrated to baltimore maryland. let me know if you want more info/p. april mette
