The marriage of Benjamin Messick to Betty Nottingham dated 1-1-1776 is taken from the Lewes and Coolspring Presbyterian Church Records, Lewes, Delaware and transcribed in the Vital Records of Kent & Sussex Counties, Delaware from 1686-1800 by F. Edward Wright. Page 128

The birth of Betsey Henry Messick dated 29 Oct 1792 is recorded in Prince George's Church Records, Sussex County, Dagsboro, Delaware... to Benjamin and Betty Messeck (note spelling derivation) in same book. Page 156

The birth of Isaac Covington Messick 4 Jun 1795 also same parents, same church records, same book. Page 157

The birth of Harriet Clayton Messick 10 Jun 1799 also , her parents are listed as Benjamin and ELIZABETH Messick. same church , same book. Page 159.

Benjamin and Betty had a child b abt 1785-88 named Louisa nicknamed Lovey Messick who married a Clifton.

I am not sure yet if the Benjamin and Betty who married in 1776 are the parents or grandparents of Harriet Clayton Messick. I have wondered if they had a son named Benjamin who also married a Betty?

My 2GGF Samuel Messig also spelled Messick died in 1854 in Kent, DE. He was born about 1780 in Delaware. He married my 2GGM Mary Ann Eaton in 1842 in Kent, DE. Had to be at least a 2d marriage for him as he was much older.
I have his will, a census from Appoquiminik Hundred, New Castle in 1850 but no other documents. Any ideas out there

Deborah

Who is the current expert on the Messick family of Delaware?

My ancestor was Harriet Clayton Messick, who first married George Jones and second, Edward Crowley, both marriages having occurred in the 1820s in Jefferson Co., OH. Harriet according to Sussex Co., DE records was born in 1799 to Benjamin and Betsy (Elizabeth) Messick. Benjamin and Betsy had also chidren named Elizabeth Henry and Isaac Covington, both also born in the 1790s.

One source suggests that Betsy was Elizabeth Nottingham who married Benjamin Messick in 1776.

What I'm curious about is the fact that Benjamin named his son, Isaac Covington. Apparently, the Covington family fits into Benjamin's or Elizabeth Nottingham's families. However, from what I've found online (thus far), I cannot find the connection. One source speaks of a Benjamin Messick whose second wife was Betsy ______________, but unfortunately his death date predates the birth of these children born in the 1790s.

I would appreciate anyone expertise in the Delaware families of Messick and Covington to advise regarding the ancestors of Isaac Covington Messick, brother of Elizabeth Henry and Harriet Clayton.

Thanks!!

Harriet Clayton Messick

Looking for information about Harriet Clayton Messick. Harriet was married in Jefferson Co., OH first to George Jones in 1821 and second to Edward Crowley in 1827. One researcher on Ancestry.com claims that Harriet was born 10 Jun 1799 in Sussex Co., Delaware, a daughter of Benjamin Messick. In 1820, there was a Benjamin Messick as head of household living in Steubenville, Jefferson Co., OH the same county that Harriet ended up marrying Jones and Crowley in the 1820s. I'm assuming there is some Delaware birth record for Harriet Clayton Messick but have not found the source.

Any help on Harriet and her parents and siblings would be much appreciated.

Hi Elizabeth, I am sorry it has taken so long to reply. Can you tell me anything about your great grandmother? Date of birth. Location of birth. Maybe who she married, any names of brothers and/or sisters. Her parents names etc. Did she leave Delaware for Ohio?

My gg grandfather was Job Goslee m. Elizabeth Messick 19 Dec 1816 in Pickaway county, Ohio. He and Elizabeth had 9 children, John, George, Maria Ellen, James, William, Nathan, Elizabeth, Job (my g grandfather), Mary, and Margaret Ann.

Please let me know if this info helps and makes a connection for you.

Ken Goslee
