I believe I may also be a descendant of Johann Jost Merten.
My ggg grandfather was Francis Martin born in Virginia about 1785 and died in Warren County Virginia in 1850. From what I can find Francis may have been the son of George Martin (1762-1822)and George the son of Charles Martin (1744-1815). Then comes a larger issue. I have seen that Charles is the son of Johann Jost Merten and also have seen those that believe he is the son of Francis Martin II.

I would appreciate any help/leads that anyone can give me as to who the parents, etc of my Francis Martin were and am I truly a descendant of Johann Jost Merten??

Thanks
Lori

Hello Shirley, we don't have a lot of info on Peter Merten as we have recently discovered him and have some film from the LDS on order. All we can tell you at this stage is that Peter Joseph Merten was christened on April 24, 1816 in a roman catholic church in Helden, Westfalen, Prussia. Peter's parents were Johan Henrich Merten and Elisabeth Kellermann. Peter's siblings were Christian Mertens and Maria Anna Mertens. We know that the Mertens settled in MN, WI for sure and know of Iowa and Ohio but are yet to prove a link there. If you'd like to check out possible links between our trees, our website is www.mertensonline.com. Thanks.

The information I have shows Jacob and Tillman born before Henry and that Henry was b. between 1723 and 1725. I found this information so long ago and would have to dig to find where it came from. I do not have time presently but I am definently interested.
Most of the information I have came from the book, I might have mentioned it earlier, Peter Martin and Descendants, writen by Marjorie Ann Martin Souder in 1989.
Sorry I can't add any more.

Carl,
Our Martins came from Germany after 1722. John Joseph Martin's first child, Jacob was born in Muesen, Nassau-seigen, Germany in 1722, the other 11 children were born in Germantown, Fauquier, Virginia. I have atached the notes that I have on John Joseph Martin. I have 6 generations further than John Joseph Martin.
I hope you enjoy the information below.
(from the book Fauquier County in the Revolution)John Joseph Martin, had been one of those stalwart German Pioneers, who had headed one of the twelve families that had setteled Germantown in 1720. Through thrift and imagination the Martins had prospered, but they had never held public office or taken much interest in public appairs. They were always interested in the militia, though, and most early rosters contain their name.

Information found on Rootsweb.com at world connect 7/22/00:
!BIOGRAPHY-NAME-PARENTAGE-BIRTH-DEATH-BURIAL-SPOUSES-MARRIAGES-OCCUPATION:
Letter and accompanying notes received from Walter K. Twelve men came in the party to form the First Colony at Germanna, Virginia 1714. John Joseph Martin, Melchior Brumbach,Hermann Otterbach, Jacob Holtzclaw, John Kemper and seven others. After John Joseph's father's death, his mother married (2) Jo hann George Brumbach of Muesen, and Melchior Brumbach was their oldest son,John Joseph's hal f brother.
John and Maria were probably not married until sometime after arriving in Virignia. he was authorized to take up 100 aces of land.(Spotsylvania will Book "A", page 69). Similar af fidavits were madeby Jacob Holtzclaw and John Kemper and the other nine colonists 1714on Ju ne 2 (page 73-4). These affidavits resulted in granting 1805 acres of land that later becam e Germantown.
Johann Jost Merdten and Hans Jacob Richter were elders of theReformed Church, in 1719 , established by the colonists in Virginia, and with the pastor Rev. After the Revolutionary War, Joseph's grandson, Reuben, went from Fauquier Co. VA to Laurens Co. SC. Reuben's grandson, Glassenguin later took the family further south to Chattooga Co. GA. Glassenguin probably died in the Battle of Shiloh, but more research is needed to confirm that theory. Although James Alexander Martin, Glassenguin's son, was supposed to stay home to protect the family while his father and brothers went off to war, he became restless after turning sixteen. He secretly enlisted in 1861. About April 1876, James Alexander Martin and some of his mother's Garrett relations packed their belongings and chartered a passenger train headed from GA to Fayette Co. TX. The women rode up front, and the men rode in the cargo car with their animals and farming equipment. From there they moved by covered wagon to Colorado Co. TX.

The following information is on Peter Martin Sr.,
who is Peter MARTIN Sr. is the 3rd great grand uncle of Carl Henry MARTIN. Their common ancestors are John Joseph MARTIN and Marie Cathrine UTTERBACH.
I found the information about Peter Martin Sr. & George WWashington from a book in Clayton Library here in Houston. I think that was one of many exciting times in my rresearch. By the way where do you live.
(From Mrs A. A. Hamilton, granddaughter of John Martin, son of Peter Martin)
He was a devout member of the Episcopal(Luthern) Church. The dates quoted were copied from a record written by his son, John Martin and was in possession (in 1956)of Egert Smith of Martinsburg, Ind. It is called The Record of the birth & marriage of my father, & births of his children. In 1926 it was in possession of Lucretia, only child of Allen Martin, of Martinsburg. His prayer book was in possession of his son Peter, Jr. in Kentucky.
"Soldier" - Peter served in the Revolutionary War. It is said that Peter Martin served on Gen. George Washington's staff as an interpreter during the winters (1777 & 1778) at Valley Forge. He was called both a "Patriot and Soldier." A "Patriot" by furnishing supplies for public use while living in Berkeley Co., Vir. A "Soldier" by serving in the Culpeper Co., Vir. Militia under Capt. George Johnson. He had the satisfaction of seeing the surrender of Lord Cornwallis, at Yorkland in Oct. 1781. The family record states that he and Samuel Jacobs entered the service together. Military records do not show a Peter Martin, but rather a Peter Martine serving. He was not on the Culpeper Co. 1873 tax list but was on the Berkeley Co. list.
"Sleep Walker" - While in Camp at Valley Forge, Peter dreamed his wife (Sarah) had come to visit him and that he was to take a walk with her. So in his sleep, he arose from his bed, walked out across the grounds, and by the Sentinels (unchallenged). He walked until he stepped into the cold water of a creek. He was very much alarmed at finding himself so far from camp without a pass or
countersign. He crept slowly back to his tent. He had to pass a sleeping sentinel, whom you can be sure he did not report.
After Peter Martin's move to Kentucky he found the Indians to be troublesome They were apt to steal a settlers horse, so a bell was fastened on the neck of one horse, to help locate the horses. Peter's sleep was no doubt haunted by visions of Indians riding off on his fine mare. So he went out in his sleep, guided by the sound of a bell, caught his mare and led her to a remote place. He tied her in a thicket and muttered: "I think she is hidden where she can't be easily found." It took several days of searching to find the mare. It was then that they realized, Peter had been walking and working in his sleep.

1/17/00 I went to Family Treemaker in search of Rebecca Bridgewater. I could not find a Rebecca Bridgewater with the date of birth I had for spouse of John Thomas Cross. In researching on familysearch.org I found that a Levi Bridgewater had a Rebecca but again it was not the right birth year. In following through with the Bridgewater's I found that the last one was an Immanuel Bridgewater from England. In Genforum.com I found reference to Family Treemaker and went to that site to see if I could find the proper Rebecca Bridgewater and after exhausting my search I went to the SURNAME listing of the person who had done the research and posted it on family treemaker. In that SURNAME search I came up with a lot of Martin's one of which is the infamous Peter Martin Sr. a lot more dates and information than I had. I am in the process now of adding this information.

Found this information 7/22/00 on Roots Web.com at the world connect site:
!GENEALOGY-BIRTH-DEATH-SPOUSE-MARRIAGE-BURIAL-BIOGRAPHY: Letter and accompanying notes received from Walker K. Peters will signed Mar 3,1807 and the Court was held Apr 13, 1807, Shelby Co. Kentucky. His death was between those two dates.
Peter and Sarah moved their family to Woodford Co., Kentucky about 1790. Their family having all been born in Virginia, they lived on a farm about 6 miles east of Shelbyville, near Clay Village. The children married and lived in Shelby, Nelson and Jessamine Counties.

I am looking for information about about Catherina/Catherine Merten who married Theodore Franken. They lived near Koln/Cologne, Germany. They emigrated to the USA, arriving in April 1880 and settled near California MO. From there they moved to Rooks Co KS and on to McLoud OK. I have been unable to find any German church records, perhaps destroyed in WWII, what ship they sailed on and where it landed in the USA. If you know anything about the ancestors of Catherina or Theodore, please reply. I will be glad to share information. Theodore was the son of Henrich Wilhelm Franken and Veronica Klein/Kline.

I just stumbled upon this site. Yes, both John D. and H. H. Klaus were Katherine's brothers. John D. was my great-grandfather. All of the Merten and Klaus family members buried in Zion Cemetery are related to these original settlers in Delaware County. All--or almost all--of these people were German Methodists, and members of churches affiliated with the Northwest German Methodist Conference, a group that was disbanded during WWI and consolidated with the English-speaking Methodist Episcopal Church. Many of the Merten and Klaus men entered the ministry.

Zion Cemetery is named for Zion Church, that used to stand just to the east of the cemetery. There was another church, Immanuel Church, a few miles south and a bit west of Zion Church. Family legend has it that J. D. Klaus donated the land for Zion Church and the cemetery, and his brother, H. H. Klaus, donated the land for Immanuel Church. There was a third German Methodist church just a few miles away in Colesburg.

Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, many or most of the archives from the German conference have been lost, though this is just a rumor...

Best regards,

John Klaus
Mt.
Hello Evelyn. My grandfather James Alexander Carson Martin, (1874-1946) was born, lived and died in Hartwell, Georgia. My father, Reuben Dupree Martin, (1904-1963) was born in Hartwell, Ga., moved to Tampa, Florida around 1926, lived here until his death. I was born and have always lived in Tampa. I have much information I would like you to examine and you are welcome to visit my family tree anytime. As for the info you sent me, I have records of Henry Martin being born in 1720, not 1725. It would be odd for him to have married at the age of 15 in 1740. Also, the records you sent me earlier show John Martin arriving in 1714, not after 1722. I have no info of him marrying until he arrived in Fauquier, Va. Help me out, please. Carl

Hello Evelyn. Thanks so much for the detailed info. I agree that our common ancestor is Johann Jost Merten, (John Joseph Martin). I disagree that he came over after 1722. I believe that he arrived in 1714. Also, I believe our "lines" part right away. Whereas your line follows Peter Martin to Kentucky and later, Indiana, my line flows through John's first son, Henry,(1720). Henry's son, Reuben Henry,(1751) fathered my great grandfather, Samuel L. Neulan Martin, (1791 or 1797) in South Carolina. He inturn fathered my grandfather, James Alexander Carson Martin in Hartwell, Georgia in 1874. Carl

Thanks for replying. I received my membership as a Christmas gift last year. So, Ive only been at this for a little over six months. Concerning Peter Martin, I believe he comes from the Martins of England, as I seem to remember reading a story or seeing a document to that effect!?! I do know my Martin ancestors came from Germany around 1714 and used the surname spelling of Merten. Carl

I have also traced the line of Martins to ferndorf in Germany the first generation of 1500. Thats as far as I got. On my dads side the Martins are mostly found in Jack County Jacksboro Tx with my great grandfather Isham Martin who came from Kentucky as his father before him. From there I traced as much as I could back to the Mertens in Germany. Do you know if the names have any Jewish origins? Just curious.

Hi Scott,
My great, grandfather's name was Peter Mertens. I do not know if his middle name was Joseph. You said in your message that Christian Mertens' siblings may have settled in Ohio. My Peter Mertens settled in Cincinnati, Ohio where he owned a tailor shop. I do not have any of his siblings or his parents names so I'm not sure that this is the Peter Mertens you may be looking for. Do you know anything at all about your Peter?

According to records I have, my great, grandfather was born on May 24, 1824 in Colgne, Prussia, Germany. He died in Cincinnati on February 4,1897. He was married twice. His 1st wife was Theresa (Nee ?) who was also born in Germany. They had 5 children: Caroline, Catherine, Peter Jr., and Mary.
His 2nd wife was Maria Anna Kreer (my great, grandmother). She, too, was born in Germany and they had 5 children: Bertha, Anna Barbara ( my grandmother), Frank, Pauline and another Bertha. Do any of these names ring a bell?

I wish I had more information on my Peter Mertens but I'm still searching and haven't had much luck.
Shirley Mair
