I am trying to break my brick wall on Jacob Merriman (Merryman) born abt 1829 in Pennsylvania.
On 2 Jul 1848 he married Margaret Boner (Bonar) in Shelby County IN. I cannot find them on the 1850 or 1860 census anywhere. In 1870 she and their 2 children, Sarah Catherine (my gr grandma) and Jacob are living with Margaret's brother, Adam in Benton, Davies County, MO. Margaret died 6 May 1907 in Parsons, Labette County, KS. Her daughter, Sarah, married a McComas who migrated from Indiana to KS with the railroad. Any information you could share would be greatly appreciated. My family tree on ancestry is Putman McComas Pilkington Merryman Jarvis Davis Farr family tree.
Thank you.

Adoresta Clark Merriman (1848-1879) was my great-great-grandmother and is buried in the Merriman Cemetery. Her son, Allen Benjamin Martin (1872-1958) was raised primarily by his grandparents, Warren (1823-1903) and Rhoda (Clark) Merriman (1828-1889). When he was an adult he moved to North Dakota and married Ida Louise Curtis (1877-1935). They had five children: Frank Ephraim (1898-1975), George Albert 1899-1907), Charlotte Adoresta, my grandmother (1900-1991), Ida Mae (aka Sr. M. Generosa) (1903-1996) and Joseph Albert (1907-1972), and eventually relocated to Duluth MN.

Information about Ephraim and any other children who appeared (briefly) in census data has been an apparent deadend and according to relatives who knew Allen B, he did not talk about any of them, other than to say that his grandfather taught him to be a carpenter.

I have three lines of Merriman's that I am working on. One is mine that goes back to a Thomas Merryman b. 1624 in in Stow On The Wold, Gloucester, England. Another one goes back to a different Thomas Merriman b. in Witney, Oxfordshire, England, in the early 1500's and was married to a woman named Joan in1529 at Witney, Oxfordshire, England. Then finally I have Capt. Nathaniel Merriman line od descendants. I am trying to connect these three Merriman families together and I am guessing that Nathaniel Merriman might be the key and connecting person. What I would like to know is there any proof that two or all three families connect together and secondly are Nathaniel's ancestors listed anywhere.

William Andrew Merriman 1892 - 1991 Cleveland Ohio, father Edward J Merriman and mother Clara Ellen Franks

I am trying to untangle William Andrew Merriman's parentage. Various records give his birth as June 3, 1892 in Cleveland. I believe his mother to be Clara Ellen Franks, previously married to someone named Caleb Graven, by whom she had four children. She shows up in the index to Cook County, Illinois marriages for 1891 as marrying an Edward J. Rapin on April 30, 1891. I can find no marriage record of her and anyone named Merriman, anywhere, but in various records William Andrew clearly states his father's name as Edward Merriman. I'm beginning to wonder if the county clerk in Cook County was deaf and misheard Merriman for Rapin (I can't find any records for an Edward J. Rapin, either, except for the marriage record). Or perhaps the indexer mis-read Merriman for Rapin? It all seems very implausible. If anyone knows the answer to this, I'd be pleased to hear. Edward Merriman may have died in 1910, and Clara went on to marry a further time to Albert Lewis Simpson about 1914. He had been married to Clara's sister Rosa Franks, although whether before he married Clara or afterwards I can't say. Both Rosa and Albert died around 1924, which is also the year of death I have for Clara. HELP!

Thats as far as I have, they were all from conneticut and came out here with Sarah Winchester, I am very interested in Lewis as I think he may be a cousin to a Phoebe Merriman that is in my line.

George Henry Merriman (1832-1889) Company K, 50th GA Infantry - CSA

From "The John Lastinger Family of America" by Aurora C. Shaw, (1960):

"Caroline Elizabeth Lewis, b. 3 Dec 1839, d 2 Mar. 1912; m. 24 Jan 1858, George Henry Merriman, b. 26 Oct. 1832, London, England, the son of Nathaniel Merriman; he died 17 Jan.1889 nr. Asheville in Jefferson Co.,and was buried in Brooks County, Ga. Caroline was a widow for twenty-three years, for her husband died in his 57th year. His death occurred after a lingering illness. Though an immigrant to this country as a young man before his marriage, when the War Between The States came about, he, too, went into service, leaving his wife and two small children at home. During his service, he was wounded and taken a prisoner at the battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania on July 2, 1863, and he wrote to his dear Cara (Caroline) in beautiful handwriting first down the page and then across on both sides to preserve paper, telling her of his wounds, that three of his company we re also in the hospital with him, his wound being in the left breast where he was struck by a piece of shell. He was in the U.S. General Hospital at Davis Island, New York, as a prisoner.
Newton Merriman was actually the son of Mansel Merriman and Emily Mouton Merriman. You can see this family constellation in the 1850 census. Aborn is still a single man living with the Shaws. Mansel and Emily are listed with Elizabeth. Edward Merriman is living in his sister's household Rebecca Merriman Shaw. William Merriman, Edward's brother, is married to Adele Mouton.

Check out the 1860 census. Aborn has married Alice, and they have 3 children: Adelia, Mary A., Talbott (Tolbert). The next family listed is Emily Mouton (why she wasn't given Merriman I do not know because by the 1860 census they were no longer giving maiden names). Anyway, Mansel is absent, but the children now include Elizabeth, Edward, Allice, Sarah, Newton F. and William. (Note that Mansel and Emily named their first two after Mansel's parents)

By the 1870 census, Alice is missing, and they have all relocated to Texas and are listed as a combined family. Did Aborn and Emily marry? or Did Aborn look after his brother, Mansel's, family. Who knows?

I may be the one who is confused so would like clarification. I had the inpression that Aborn married Mary Theresa Morgan, but you are saying Augustus married her. Do you have documentation of the first name of her husband. The problem may be using initials, A. L.. It was my understanding that Aborn married her and died in the late 1880's. As far as I know she was a widow when the great storm came in 1900. An Augustus Lyons Merriman died in 1916. So if you have documentation as to her being married to Aborn or Augustus, please share.

I think u r right. I have a citation;
ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/roots-l/messages/01jan/141802 that states Augustus married Teresa Johnson Morgan & they had 5 kids.
Raphael, Johnson Lyons,Augustus(Gus), Jesse Johnson, Agnes (m. Bassett)
Wasn't this Aborn's 2nd wife? We have a bunch of Morgans in the Fort Worth area. What I don't follow is William marrying Adele Mouton. I have William as Edward's brother and no offspring named William from Edward/Elizabeth Lyons. Could the three marriages have been Aborn/Alisse, Mansel/Emily, Augustus/Adele? The earlier children I listed as Augustus' were they in fact Aborn's from his second marriage? This is confusing but very interesting and I really feel for the Moutons. Deported from Nova Scotia to GA/S.C. Held as P.O.W.s. Escaped to LA. Hooked up w/ the Merriman's and lost everything again after the Civil War.

I have a lawsuit reference that lists Edward Merriman as the Natural Tutor of Maimsel (Mansel),Mary Ann, Aborn, Augustus and Martha Merriman. It appears that was some dispute regarding their claim involving their mother's, (Francis "Fanny" Elizabeth Lyons) estate.
I believe the Merriman-Mouton three-way was:
Aborn-Alisse
Mansel-Adele
Augustus-Emily
Further confused when survivor Aborn combines families w/ survivor Emily for convenience. Does this sound reasonable?
Thanks,
Dan

Wow, we waited to long to ask relatives here all are gone. We actually even lost track of grandmothers sister who was dis-owned but we don't know why. My father always wanted to find her again as he was a small child when she left. We can't find any record of her, she must have eloped and at that time name was changed. Thank you for your response, I wish we could help each other. If you want to reach me again email below
Margaret Kirker (McMerriman or McMerriman Family)
margaretkirker@yahoo.com

Edward and Elizabeth Lyons had five children according to the Michael Lyons lawsuit. Mansel was the eldest, then Mary Anne, Aborn Lyons, Augustus Lyons and Martha A. The name Mansel follows through our family in each generation. Mansel was A. L.'s brother. He named a son Mansel, whose sister, Mary A. Merriman, named a son after her brother. The name ties the generations together.

I'm sure you are correct and I had Mansel and Augustus confused. The name Mansel shows up repeatedly in our line but I don't know who the first Mansel was. Can you tell me how I can view your family tree you referenced. I found the Mouton's struggle during the Le Grand Dérangement facinating.
http://www.acadiansingray.com/Appendices-ATLAL-MOUTON.htm
Thanks for any info.
Dan
