Melton Family,
I have been researching Georgia soldiers at the Alamo. It seems that Eliel Melton was born in Franklin County, Georgia. During the late 1700s and early 1800s, parts of Franklin County were cut up into several other counties. So exactly which county his father, Jonathan, lived in uncertain until I can check land records.
In the early 1800s, Jonathan and his family lived in Clarke Co., Georgia. Clarke Co. was partly cut out of Franklin Co.
My real concern is that in several published family trees and other places, Jonathan is listed as a Rev. War Vet.
Because of his age, it seems he would not have been in the war. Also, the SAR in Clarke County, GA., where Jonathan lived, does not have him listed. Neither does the State SAR.
I believe the Jonathan that moved to GA. from VA., has been confused with his cousin in VA. who is also named Jonathan. The VA. Jonathan, and his father, both fought in the War. Also, Jonathan the Rev. War Vet. received a pension in the 1820s in VA. The GA Jonathan died in 1815.
Please give me your thoughts.
