If you go down to Portsmouth, you can easily find information about Edward Melcher, who was living there in 1657 (for sure). Your captain is descended form Edward.

One Aunt seemed to think there was a John Melcher who immigrated to Portsmouth in 1631, But I have yet to find evidence.
