The father was August Melcher, born in Wisconsin abt 1859. His wife was Hattie born Wisconsin, but parents of both were born in Denmark. August was 51 in 1910, Hattie 45.

Herbert, the oldest son, age 19, was on the 1920 census as a School Teacher in Lincoln, Brown County, SD. His wife was Minnie (nee Hermine Christine Ruby).

By 1930, Herbert was Head of family with several children including Doris, his parents, a sister and two brothers working in telephone industry. Herbert was possibly superintend of schools, family living in Aberdeen. Aberdeen now as Northern State University.
