Re: Mixon-Megginson shared paternal line

Hello. I noticed a comment from you (al_jhel) in I think an earlier year just a few weeks ago and replied in hopes that you might still see it. Your surmise is quite right. The Mixon/Megginson people bought land in Gloucester Co. in 1652. The land was repatented in the 1680's showing the names of the people involved in the 1652 purchase. All of this is on records of deeds at the Library of Virginia, Richmond. What seals the deal on the identification of the family as being one family but with two surname spellings in common use is a Petition of Michael Megginson's for relief from a condition of his father's will, John Mixon's will. This petition went through the grindingly slow process of being read at the House of Burgesses; then read by the Governor's Council; then approved by the House; approved by the Council; signed and forwarded by the Governor to England; considered by the Board having oversight of Colonies; authorized by all concerned and sent back to Virginia by 1718. The document uses this wording, "... by Michael Megginson aka Mixon...." concerning the will of John Mixon. The original petition and the final approval appears in a book entitled The Statutes and Laws of Virginia by Mr. Henings. I have been told that a renewed royal patent for the property was also sent back to Virginia as a result of this petition, but I have not been able to find it at the Library of Virginia. My interest used to be to find my own family roots as far back as I could go. That took me to 1640. I then followed the Virginia people down through 1872. I am now eighty-one. My wife is an invalid at Farmville, VA. I have a great deal of data about the family in Virginia and would be glad to share any or all of it with someone interested. My tel. no. is (434) 394-2323. I am a fifth great grandson of William Megginson who is believed to be the son of Michael Megginson. I also followed three of Wm.'s sons when they moved to the banks of the Pee Dee and Yadkin rivers in N. Carolina. The first son's children stayed in Virginia and I descend from that family.

Megason family in TX

I believe I am a descendent of the same William Megginson & Mary Goode, but I also have dates for them in the 1715-1720's range. According to other family trees (unverified by me), their son Thomas Megginson married Elizabeth Davidson, who were the parents of Levi Lewis Megginson.

Levi Lewis had a brother named William. Either William or his children eventually spelled the name "Megason." William Megason was b. abt 1815 in TN & he married Tener Palmer b. May 1818 in AL. They moved from Tennessee to Louisiana. Many (or all) of their children migrated from Louisiana to Texas, along with many of their Megason cousins. My 2nd g-grandfather was Lewis Francis Megason (also recorded as Louis Franklin Megason) b. Feb 1847 in Perry County, Alabama. I'm curious to know what happened to his wife Virginia Leona Fox, who was b. 16 Nov 1848 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana and disappeared sometime after the 1880 US Census. My g-grandmother, Lena Blanche Megason, was b. 16 Feb 1881 in Somervell County, Texas.

Lewis F. Megason turned up on the Chickasaw reservation in 1900 with a son, Floyd b. 9 Nov 1884 in TX. Floyd died in Kingston, Arkansas in 1915. His father was no longer living with him in 1910. I would also like to know what happened to Lewis F. Megason after 1900.

Hello there!

I am a descendant of John Megginson, of England who settled in Gloucester, Virginia in the 1650s. His father may have been the elder William Megginson who was born prior to 1610. John was a Royalist, a Cavalierm and was the Head Right on the trip over to Colonial Virginia. I was wondering if anyone had any information of these early Megginson...EARLY Megginsons prior to 1700's. The name was pronounced "Mekson" in those early days as it was shown in the early Yorkshire Polls in 1379 which evolved into the Mixon surname in the US.

This was probably a very early Yorkshire lineage and was looking for connections to the old world.

Mixon-Megginson shared paternal line

Through my research I noticed there was a lot of Megginson surnames being pronounced "Mixon". What I have concluded through records and DNA was that the Mixon and Megginson families are linked to one paternal line. Particularly, I would like to contact any descendant of William Megginson of Goochland County Virginia. Records and DNA prove the same paternal line.

http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/mixon/

Hi Mary!

I was born and raised in Delaware. My grandfather was a Megginson, He was the great grandson of Charles and Elizabeth (I noticed you called her Mary Elizabeth). I just started putting my tree together this evening, so I'm still learning a lot. I'm not sure if you still get on here, but if you do, I'd love to hear more about the family.

Stacey

I am just putting together pieces of my Megginson line. My grandfather was a Megginson and I've managed to get all the way back to Richard (born around 1800 around Yorkshire). His wife was Mary. Richard and Mary would be my great, great, great, great grandparents. I'm still trying to piece together when then came over to the US from England. This has been an exciting first night of working on my family tree.

Hello Elaine,
Mary Hodgson is my great great great grandmother. She had a son, Robert, my great great grandfather, before she married Richard Megginson on Sept. 5, 1829. they lived at Willerby in the parish of Binnington and Richard was an agricultural laborer. Mary and Richard had 12 children. At least 3 sons, Charles, William and John, emigrated to Delaware, where their older half brother, Robert had already settled. Richard, the father died in 1879. In about 1886, Robert,my 3x great grandfather and his half brother John Megginson, returned to England and brought their mother Mary to live with them in New Castle, Delaware and she died there in 1889. I don't know at this point what others came to America, but there is reference of such....still working on those angles.

So, which child of Richard and Mary are you descended from and what can you tell me about their lives ? I am on determined search to find out more about Mary. There are some mysteries that haven't been solved, like why was no father listed for robert's christening ? !

Well, your post is now nearly 7 years old....maybe you have found this information already ? But I sure would like to hear from you and about your Megginson connection ! I can tell you more about Megginson descendants in Delaware as there are many ! Charles alone had 10 children ( 2 died in infancy) with his American wife Mary Elizabeth Banks ! Where do you live and do you have contact with any of the other Megginson descendants of Richard and Mary ? I live in California, I am 58 years old and have 3 children and 2 grandchildren. I so hope to get a reply from you !

Sincerely, Mary (Elizabeth)Hodgson- I retained my maiden name

I am Marshall Megginson, direct descendant of "Capt." William Megginson and "Betsy" Cabell.I live in Crewe, VA, 23930, 514 Powell St. Tel.:434-645-7099; email is elseboswell@gmail.com. I was concerned when Dave Robinson of Texas published that
Michael Megginson was born MD of Jane nee Shears. I made three trips to MD checking records for the counties which had kept records of Kent Island residents in the later 1600s. I am 80 years old in two weeks and cannot find my notes from those trips. I tried to give my notes to Dave, but he had died. There was a couple named Megginson on Kent Island and the wife had been Jane Shears. There was a son who was given the gift of a pony. There is also a will dating from the 1670s when Mr. Megginson had died. He named
no children in the will and he bequeathed all he had to his wife. The son who received the pony was not named Michael but Abel. Megginson is a common name all over Yorkshire and on the east coast of Scotland. In a 1990 census for Ayrshire I found sixty-five households of Megginsons. I conclude that the Megginson on Kent Island in the 1660s could not have been the ancestor of the Gloucester Co., VA, Megginson because Mr. Kent Island was dead. The actual ancestry of VA
Megginsons goes thru Michael's father, John. It is documented in Michael's petition to be released from the entailment of land in Gloucester Co. when that paper reports some history of the land deed back to 1652 when a Megginson bought the Cedar Bush Creek land, Gloucester Co., from a Francis Wheeler.

just read a query posted in 2001 by a Mr. Fitzgerald. Wm Megg. served in minute man company from Buckingham VA in
1776; captain (Nicholas?) Cabell commanded. Under Cabell family name at Alderman Library Univ. of VA, and at William
& Mary Library, there are rosters of this unit with dates
served, dates of killed or wounded, and date of payoff money
when this unit demobilized. The unit caught measles while it
was posted at Jamestown Island spring/summer of 1776 to ward off British raiding party landings. Unit rendered unfit for duty by measles; returned to Buck. Coun. by Aug.
I have more information. Call me (434) 645-7099.

to d/dame: I am Marshall Megginson and a direct descendant
of Judge and Col. Wm Megginson who married Mary Goode 1740/41. Have done extensive research into Megginson family
of Virginia. I too have concluded that Michael Megginson is
the father of Col. Wm Megginson, 'tho I cannot find any
documentation. There is a certain amount of circumstantial
context though.I have several notebooks filled with data;
many copies of original documents. I am looking for someone
with whom to share this information. I am 78 and have had
various health issues.Tel.434-645-7099;Email: Eboswe@aol.com

To Elizabeth Arceneaux, The woman who married Wm. Megginson
in 1740 IS NOT a martha: she is a MARY. The original marriage bond is in the Court house of Goochland Co., Virginia. There is also the permission document Mary'S step-
father signed authorizing her marriage because she was not yet quite 21, which was the legal age for marriage at that time. This document is also in the Goochland Co. Court House

I have a good bit of data on the family (ca. 1674 - 1865) in
Virginia. 434-645-7099; 514 Crewe, VA, 23930. I am a direct
descendant of Wm. Megginson & Mary Goode; happy to share.
Sincerely, Marshall E. Megginson P.S. marriage to Jane Randolph by Thomas Megg. is most probably in error.
Glad to share anything I have.

Marshall Megginson 434-645-7099 E-mail:Eboswe@aol.com

I attempted to follow Megginson brothers b. 1741 thru 1755
to the PeeDee and to counties along the border of No. & So.
Carolina around the Rev.
The Alderman Library at the University of Virginia has half
the documents; the other half is at the Swem Library of Wm &
Mary College. There was a minute man company from the area of Buckingham-Albemarle counties under a Captain Nicholas
Cabell. The Cabells found a chest of papers dating from the
Revolution and gave half and half to these schools. They
include the original muster papers of the company. Wm Megginson (1740/41 - Aug 31, 1776)is on the roll as a pvt.
He was married to Betsy Cabell, niece of Nicholas; she died
after childbirth ca. 1771, having delivered Joseph Cabell
Megginson (1771 - 1811). In ref. books about the Rev. War,
This same William b. 1740/41 is listed as an officer in the
Continental Inf. Regiments. This is a "mistake." Call me to
get the details at 434-645-7099, Crewe, VA 23930, Marshall
Megginson.

I'm looking for megginsons from Delaware and possibly Virginia. My grandfather was Joseph Edward Megginson b. 23 Apr, 1934 in Wilmington, DE d. 12 Jun, 2004 in Chincoteague Island, VA and m. Barbara Ann (Kirby) Megginson 11 Sep, 1954 in Rockland, DE. I found his obituary and it stated that his father and mother were Charles Megginson and Frances (Thompson) Megginson. I can't find any information on Charles and the information I have on Frances I cannot be certain if it is the Frances I'm looking for. The info I do have is that she was born 26 May, 1918 in Virginia d. Sep, 1979 in Lynchburg, Virginia. Charles and Frances had 4 children: Joseph Edward, James F., Charles and William. Please contact me if you have any info.

Megginson/Mask connection... Dudley Washington Mask lineage

Help all you good people in the know about the Mask family from North Carolina... My brother, Ty Burrell (yep, Phil Dunphy on Modern Family) and I are trying to corroborate information about the Mask/Mathews lineage that led to my great-great grandma Susanah Mask/Mathews Johnson Weeks [she came to Oregon after changing her name to Mathews from Mask, along with children and a couple brother Masks, who also changed their name to Mathews... John Drury and/or a John Dudley...]
My brother has approached the tv genealogy shows to spotlight our family and they are very interested, as very few 'white' celebrities are as excited about their African American past as Ty is... Penelope's mom [co-parent with and slave to Drusilla Raiford's husband Mask, if the other trees here are correct] is listed as: Young Slave girl from Madagascar)

I can't seem to find much to confirm Drusilla Raiford as Dudley Bryon Mask's wife either, nor really corroborating info about him being the correct Mask man,(?...ha)the true father to Susanah... 'they' have his dad listed as a John Mask and his white wife as dying in 1700, before Dudley is born...
Her [Susanah's, and our ancestor's] mother is Penelope (Elender/Ellendar? Mask/Mathews) and according to most family trees here, she was both sister and co-parent with Dudley Bryon Mask to Susanah. Again, I can't find confirmation of this and really need better evidence. The birthdates and such for the Mask line before Dudley Bryon Mask are so conflicting. I don't even have a really solid connection to Penelope from him except that she has more than one son with Dudley in his name somewhere - the Bryon seems specific to him and I originally included it on my tree because I found it in another... arrgh! help me out of the weak branches and get us back to our roots, please!! As best I can tell, Penelope Elender Mask in a free mulatto woman in 1850(about 50 years old then) living as Elender Mathews with her son John Dudley Mathews(yes changed from Mask) and several other children, including John's with Elizabeth Wooley - don't know when they changed it... nor when they were deemed free.
We would appreciate any and all info you may have, please... and anything we receive as a result of the television project we will happily pass on back to you.
Thanks again,
Reagan
Right.
I'm at the place right now where I'm trying to figure out the source evidence for Penelope and John Mask as father (trying to confirm same John Mask who is Dudley's father, as I feel confident that the right Dudley IS Penelope's brother, due to the Dudley and Delaney that show up in her children's names) The birthdates are not adding up in most of the trees I'm coming across and am hoping to find church or... SOME kinda real record, ya' know? You are such a wealth of information, I am hoping you may be able to send me in the right direction. I've been trying to work through the NC State Records and Archive site but it surely ain't easy to navigate, as I'm sure you already know. Anywho, if you do have something to further our search with regard to solid evidence about John Mask, please email me at: rkjburrell@yahoo.com

Samuel Megginson & Catherine Mask

PLEASE, can someone help me! I am looking for documentation to prove that Samuel Megginson and Catherine Mask were the parents of Rebecca G. Megginson (1829-1892) who married Dudley Washington Mask (1828-1888) for a DAR application.

Can anyone help me prove this! I'm looking for anything that could be used to show the family relationship. I can use an obituary of one of the other children if it mentions the parents and Rebecca as a sister, land records, anything that shows Rebecca as a child of Samuel and/or Catherine. If anyone knows of any documentation please let me know and I will get a copy...Any leads would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,
Sandra Beaver
sgmbeaver@charter.net
