Hi Grace, I know this is an old post, but in case you didn't get your answer. The death date of James McCoy is established as March 1807 when a notice in the Pittsburgh paper names Rachel McCoy as administrator. Then in 1808 there is an Orphan's Court record. I found these records in Beaver County and at the State Archives.
Bond Book, #3, p. 63, Allegheny County - "27 March 1807 - $600 bond, Rachel McCoy, Jonathan Phillips and John Marshall"
Pittsburgh Gazette, 7 July 1807 - "Estate notice, Rachel McCoy Admx"
Orphan's Court, Allegheny County - Book 1 August 1808 - "Rachel McCoy, widow of James deceased, 3 sons, 2 are minors, Hugh and Isaac. Jonathan Phillips appointed guardian. Alexander McCoy, over 14, chooses Jonathan Phillips guardian."
The next group of Orphan's Court records don't come until 1814 which is probably what lead to the original death date of 1812-1814. It appears that the family wanted the land put in William's name so they could sell and move into Beaver County.
The name that keeps coming up in these records is that of Jonathan Phillips. There may have been McCoys in that family so I wonder if James McCoy was related in some way to Jonathan. Perhaps a brother-in-law...?
Anyway, it has been a long time since we have corresponded.
Annette
