Mead ancestors

My father was Robert Dell Mead, his father was Thomas Albert Mead. Thomas's father was Almore or (Almar, Allmor) R Mead that was born in Canada and married Eliza Hubbell. Almore's father was Richard born in New York (?) and his mother was Margaret Thatcher also born in New York. If anyone can fill in the blanks I sure would appreciate it. My father died not knowing any of this information due to his father telling him that this was none of his business. They sure made things hard for us. I hope that there is someone out there that can help me out. It is very possible that I may have middle names for Richard and Margaret since I have not had any luck finding either one of them.

Do you have any dates for the Richard Mead in NY? That would help..........even a rough idea. Spencer Mead's history of the family was published in 1901...I have a copy. As Richard is a common name any other info would help. In general though he, and you, are probably descended from William mead that arrived in the 1630's and settled in Stamford, CT in 1641. Then the familiy spread out to Greenwich, CT and then NY and then all over the place.

Tommy,

We do not know a lot about them. We know that Richard married Margaret Thatcher before he moved to Canada. We have no idea if he had any brothers or sisters. We know that he had a son Richard (born 1852) and he married Eliza Anne Hubbell (born 1856). They married in Thamesville Ontario. According to the census that they filed when they moved to Michigan, his father was born in New York and mother we have no idea where she came from, I can not read the census. Could be New York could be England. I do not know if this is any good information or not. We are assuming that he was born in the mid to late 1820's and Margaret possibly in the early 1830's. We do know that he was a Watch Maker and owned his own Jewlery store. We have no idea where they are buried either. I hope that you can give me a little help. If he is a decendant of William that will at least give us soom help. I do know that my fathers Aunt said at one time that we were related to Mead paper. She said that the family went to Meadville, Pennsylvania to visit all the time. We have no idea if this is correct?

Thank you for your reply and I do wish that you can give me a little more imput. How can we get a copy of the book? Anything at this point would be a great help.

Thank you again

It is a long, difficult struggle to weed your way through the early Meads who settled in the American colonies. Even the book by Dr. Spencer Mead is filled with inaccuracies, so be careful in what you accept as gospel. There are two Mead families you should look at: William (born in Watford, Hertfordshire, England on Dec. 27, 1592) and Gabriel or Goodman, who may have come from Lydd, Kent, England. William is regarded to be the progenitor of the Mead Family in America (the Connecticut Line Spencer Mead writes about) and Gabriel is believed to be the father of the Massachusetts Line. Both families sent descendants into Canada. Happy hunting!

I want to thank you for the information that you have given me. I am greatful to have somewhere to search. Which line are you from? It is very interesting to find that there are so many people out there that you are related to and have no idea who they are. I would love to find out where we came from for my dad even though he is not here anymore.

Where are you from? I live in Michigan.

Thank you again

I am from the William-Joseph-Joseph-Nehemiah-Joseph-Eliphalet-Harvey-Fayette-Fred-Eugene line. Fayette was born in New York, but lived on a farm just outside Litchfield, Mich., before settling near Alexandria, Minn. I am a retired newspaper editor now living in Horshoe Bay, Texas. One of my pasttimes is publishing the www.meadnewsletter.com. It is free, if you care to look at it. I also belong to www.meadresearchers@yahoo.com" target="_blank">www.meadresearchers@yahoo.com. Primarily, we are looking for ancestors who lived in Dutchess County, NY, but you might find it quite helpful. We have researched the early Meads/Meades quite extensively. Where do live in Michigan? My great grandfather had a brother, Irville (Irving), who remained near Litchfield

This is one of...if not... the best site for Mead history stuff. Vance Mead has proven over the years to be extremely thorough and persnickity about what he considers proveable sources and has been a great genealogical detective in proving and disproving what has come before in the way of data.

I am on the John Line and have it approved by the SAR, DAR, DFPA and OFPA.

I have his parents as:

William Mead & Sarah Garland

Andrew Meade, of Ballintober, County Cork, Ireland, came over to America about 1685, and was the ancestor of the of the Virginia Meades.

Their name was originally spelled Meagh, and they have been traced back to about 1300 in County Cork. There are a number of places on the net where this information is available. Try some of these names in Google.
