I'm still desperately trying to find the b/b details and parents of James MEACHER, who moved around Hants. before settling in Gomshall, Shere, Surrey, where he died aged 90 in 1862, although his age varies over the years!
On the 1841 census for Gomshall, Shere, Surrey he was aged 65; in 1851 there he was said to be 73, born Bishop's Waltham. However, so far no trace of bis b/b can be found in BW.
He was "of Fareham" when he married first wife Ann COLLICK on 29/10/1795 in Wickham, witnesses Thomas NOAM (?) and Francis CALLAWAY.
They had William chr 8/4/1798 in Fareham, (who may have married Sarah Ann and had William chr 14/2/1830 at St. Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey, Surrey, to where James's youngest son, George, moved).
Ann COLLICK d abt March 1802 in Winnall, Winchester, where James married Hannah COX (chr 7/7/1776 in Northington, bro Richard chr 21/3/1779, parents Richard and Mary) on 24/10/1802.
James and Hannah MEACHER had in Winnall:
John chr 25/12/1803, and
Thomas 15/6/1806, (may have mar as MEACHAM to Elizabeth BRAMLEY 5/11/1824 Medstead and had Henry MEACHAM chr 16/1/1825 Medstead),
and at St. Faiths, Havant:
Harriet 16/4/1810 (may have had Harriet Elizabeth MEACHER illegitimately b 1835 St. Giles, Camberwell, London),
George (my ancestor) 10/10/1813, m Sarah WOOD b 1810 Bermondsey), and
Hannah 23/2/1816.
A James MEACHER was tried at Southampton Assizes for highway robbery at Kings Somborne with Thomas JACOB and James LUKER.
These 3 were also tried at the Lent Assizes in 1817 for 3 separate crimes of housebreaking; James's was in Havant.
A James MEACHER was transported to Australia on the "Ocean II" dep Spithead Oct. 1817.
I don't know if that JM was mine, but he disappears after the birth of his last child in 1816 until 1841 in Surrey.
As James moved around Hants., I'm hoping someone with access to records for the several places mentioned might be able to help me track down his parents please.
Many thanks.
