McStravic marriage mystery to solve

Hello,
My grandmother married James Hugh McStravic born about 1905 to Jane and Hugh. See attached file. My mother was the only child of Alice Mae Mahoney. We would like to know more about James and was there a child from this marriage. My grandmother spoke very highly of the McStravics in Rochester. She said she was just young. If you choose to enlighten us, we would be grateful.
We are researching.
Thanks,
Amy Haas

Adrian and I have been in touch, and it appears that his great grandfather John (2) is the brother of my great grandfather Charles (who emigrated to Boston). I have Charles' birth certificate (thank you, Scott MacStravic); he was born in Jan of 1867 and his parents were John (1) McStravick and Catherine Lyness, both of Taghnevan, Shankill, Armagh. I'm wondering if there is a connection with Patrick? Eugene, do you know who Patrick's parents were? Not sure how many McStravicks were about in Armagh in the 1850-1860's, but maybe there is a connection.

Hi Scott: Thank you so much for your help! I would love to have a copy of the certificate, if that is not too much trouble. If you are able to email it, please send to cathyggill@hotmail.com. If you would rather mail it, I will email my address to you, if you would send me your email. I thought I could access it from this site, but I cannot. Of course, I would want to cover any cost involved. I don't know whether you are in Ireland, UK or the US; I am in the US. I do appreciate it so much and am grateful for your assistance. Kind regards, Cathy

The e-mail message you sent does not include your e-mail address, but I hope this reply will reach you. I found the birth certificate copy for your great-grandfather in my file of "Other McStravicks", i.e. those who have no known connection to my branch of the family. If you want only the information on the certificate, rather than a copy of the certificate, itself, here it is:

Births registered in the District of Lurgan, counties of Armagh and Down. Registration: RGB 059/0035 among birth certificates from 1863 to 1996.

Date of Birth 22nd January 1867, name of child: Charles, male. Father: John McStravick of Lagnavin, Shankill. Mother: Catherine (Lyness) McStravick. Place of Birth: Lagnavin, Shankill. Occupation of Father: Laborer. Certified copy made 24 November 2000 by "Oifig an Ard-Chlaraitheora, Dublin". If you wish to receive the copy, itself, please supply an address to which I can send it.

Happy to be of help.

Scott MacStravic

Hi Eugene, I hope you are well. Greetings from a lovely sunny London.
My connection with the McStravicks is through my Great Grandfather who was John. As far as I know he came from somewhere around the Lurgan area of County Armagh. He was married twice, first to Ellen Sharky and then to Susana Stoope (Annie) who was my Great Grandmother. He had one child that I know of to his first marriage, Catherine who died of TB when she was around 20. My Grandmother (Mary Alice) and her brother John were the children of his second marriage. John died shortly after my Grandmother was born possibly in an accident. His brother Charles moved to Boston (USA) and his other brother Simon moved to Scotland (around Glasgow I think).
Not sure if there is any connection but I thought I would drop you a message.

Best wishes
Adrian

Hi, so sorry I don't know your name?

Hi

I think in my excitement I got in a muddle. Re reading the article I think Francis got off and it was only Neil who got the hard labour. But both are mentioned in the article.

Here is my email, send me a mail and I will attach the article probably won't be until the weekend now.

wendyizzard@hotmail.com

Would love to see anything you have on the McStraffick/Hines too, particularly the friends who went to America too. Might help me find some more hints about Adamsons.

Regards

Wendy

Thank you for your response! It was so long ago when I posted. I'm trying to remember what I knew and didn't know back then.

Francis (aka Frank) McStraffic was my 2nd Great Grandfather. I'd also seen the census information you referred to. Catherine was his and Susan Riley's oldest daughter and she is listed on one of the census forms with Susan and Andrew Adamson as working out of the home at age 14 as a servant. She is the only one that you have not listed. Susan and Frank had 5 children together total.

I knew that Neil (Frank's youngest brother) had been involved in the coin counterfeit, but I didn't know Francis had! I would love to see your articles on that to see where he is listed. Neil died in the Durham coal mines of black lung shortly after being released from prison. I know that Frank came here to America to work in the mines, but am not sure if he and Susan were separating. He waited a long time (over 5 years) before remarrying here in the US and was older when he started a family with my GGGrandmother. It looks like he had been here a while, a friend of his and Susan's came to join him, and then shortly thereafter he filed his intent to become a citizen of the US. He'd also apparently told others here that he was married, because the Catholic church lists my GGrandfather as "illegitimate". We thought maybe he had planned to make money and bring his family over or return to Durham but then learned from that friend that Susan had moved on and so decided to stay here and remarried.

I would love to see any records on the coin forgery! I've connected with some of Henry's family and we have enjoyed learning about what happened.

Thanks again!

I share your frustration and sadly I can’t help you with your Irish connection but I am grateful for your research and believe your Francis Hinds in Durham in 1861 is a shared connection..............

My 2nd Great Grandmother is Elizabeth Adamson and her father, Andrew Adamson lived in the Seaham area of Durham England. Tracing Elizabeth and her siblings I found baptism records for 3 of them which were rather strange as father Andrew Adamson, but mother Susannah is referenced as Hines and in one also with aka Reilly.

Andrew and Susannah (Susan) appear on the 1871 census with Elizabeth’s older sibling James Adamson (unable to find his baptism on line)and also Henry, Mary, Susan and Neil (surname translated as Hendon on Ancestry & Hindson on Durham records).

Andrew and Susannah don’t appear to have married (given the baptism records) and when she dies in 1876 Andrew Adamson (no mention of him being a widower) marries Ann Jackson (widow) in 1879 and they first appear on the 1881 census still in the Seaham area, with my 2nd Great grandmother Elizabeth.

All my research to date keeps linking me to your McStraffick / Hines where I saw the marriage certificate for Susan Reilly and Francis McStraffick aka Hines.

I have no clue as to why Susannah and Francis Hines/Hinds/McStraffick separated, but I too found a newspaper article relating to the coin forgery in 1863. I can only assume that after his “hard labour”, either Susannah would not have him back, or he deserted her for America to start a new life, maybe with some of his ill gotten gains. If Susannah had been deserted, this might explain why she was not free to marry Andrew Adamson and as she did not marry him, I think if fair to say that she did not declare him dead.

Sadly we may never know why Francis ended up in America, whilst Susannah stayed in England.

I have not traced Francis Hinds/McStraffick in America to date so am not sure where you are in the ancestral line Hines/Hinds/Mcstraffick.

I shall continue my research and if I find anything which might be of interest I will let you know.

Regards

Wendy

My family (spelling changed by dropping "k" at the end in last half of 19th century, then my father added "a" in 1930s) descended from a series of "Hughs", one of whom emigrated to the US in 1870 or slightly before. Came with father "Neill" or "Neal" who was born roughly 1800, died in New York 1895. Can't trace beyond a "Hugh" who married "Dolly" around that time. Any chance there's a link to your family? The only place name associated with them is "Cook's Hill", apparently in Armagh.

Scott MacStravic (scottmacstra@earthlink.net)

Hi Stephen,
I know it has been a long time since yuo posted this request but I only came across it recently - it would seem that there is a connection to my McStravick family - my grandfather was Patrick, the saddler, he lived in Armagh - his father was Felix and Felix did have a brother called James along with 4 other brothers and 3 sisters, their father (I presume your ggGrandfather) was John who married a Brigid (Biddy) Devlin. You may already have received this info - I have the names and DOBs of the family of John and Biddy if you are interested or if you have not got them
Regards

Records are so difficult to find as many of them were destroyed and/or burnt. If I do come on anything which may be connected to you I will contact you. The spelling of McStravick can vary as I have seen: McStravog, McStravock, McStravitt. the surname Hines I haven't come across in any of my searches.

Sorry I can't be of any real help.

Aileen

Hi,
Again not much use to you but I do know that the Phelim McStravick who presented the fork to the Museum was related to me - his father was Felix, a son of Felix McStravick and Bridget Lyons, who in turn was a son of John McStravick and Biddy Devlin. Unfortunately, Phelim died before I started the research and I have not really made any attempts to find out more about the incident you mention. Phelim had no children of his own and his wife is also dead so I have no idea if he had any further info about this. If I get the chance and the time I will make an effort to follow this incident up. Not much use to you, I'm afraid.

Regards

Hi Gar,
Thank you so much for this very valuable information as I didn't know John's father and mother's name. It makes you wonder how he got to Aghagallon from Longford, doesn't it? However, that is another piece of the puzzle solved. I signed in to Myheritage.com and had a look - it is great to see the different connections and how we all link up in the end. I am using Legacy programme as I got info on the Cassidy side from US and it was in the Legacy format.
Thanks again.

Aileen
Thanks! I'm thinking the McStravick's may have been a handfull way back then. Any idea who this one may have been? I'm guessing he was what they called the "Black Irish" with dark hair and dark eyes:

"Three pronged revolver

A famous incident that took place in Aghagallon in 1790. "The Battle of Annaghdroghal Bridge" .

In 1790 members of the Orange Order accompanied by flute and drum under the command of Col, Sharp marched from Waringstown at the request of Lord Waring to plough and prepare a field in Aghagallon County Antrim for a friend and fellow English landowner and Orangeman.

Their journey from Waringstown to Aghagallon was a controversial one, with several incidents occurring along the way in the town of Lurgan.

As Col, Sharp and his men reached the Annaghdroghal Bridge just east of Aghagallon they were met by local men who refused them passage. A fight incurred and the Battle of Annaghdroghal began.

Col, Sharp led his men in the first attack and was fatally wounded by "The Darkie McStravick," receiving a chest wound from a three pronged muck fork.

McStravick fled the scene and dumped the fork (The Three Pronged Revolver)down a dry well at Derryclone.

The fork was retrieved around 1890 from the well and was presented to a local museum by Phelim McStravick in 2008."

SO frustrated looking for McStraffick [sp] ancestors in Ireland!
Have been looking for records for my GGGrandfather Francis McStraffic alias Francis Hines born in Ireland in about 1835, came to Nebraska by 1870. (I'm giving the spelling that my Grandfather gave us when recounting what little he knew about his family history. My GGF apparently didn't share much.) We have records since his arrival in the US but can find no trace of a Francis McStraffic before then. His family worked in the coal mines. According to my GGGrandfather, his parents were Neal McStraffic and Catherine Hinds McStraffic but changed the name to the mother's family name Hinds at some point.

I did find something exciting recently. I found a census record in the UK in Durham County 1861 showing a Neal McStraffic from Ireland 18 years old as a lodger and working as a miner and then Court record in Durham UK in 1863 that read "Neil McStraffic alias Hinds", he went to prison for 12 months for counterfeiting coin (what are ya gonna do?) and then we have a death certificate for 1864 showing that Neil McStraffic died at the age of 23 in the mines in Easington of Black Lung and preset at the death was James Hinds.

This particular Neal McStraffic (born in 1843) would be too young to be my GGGGrandfather so was most likely the younger brother of my GGGrandfather Francis McStraffic and named after their father Neal McStraffic. I am thinking the James Hinds present at the death must have been another brother. My GGGrandfather named his sons in the US John, Francis Allen Hines(my GGrandfather), James and the daughters Miriam, Catherine, Rose, Margaret, and Mary.

I did find a Francis Hinds from Ireland in Durham UK in the 1861 census married to a Susan Hinds and, until 1867 when he "died", they had 2 sons named Henry and Cornelius and 2 daughters named Catherine and Mary. It has entered my mind that this could be the same as my Francis Hinds and maybe his wife declared him dead or he just vanished after coming to the US, although it looks to me like he came here with some family friends or relatives last name Walker. :-/

SO, do these names ring familiar to any who know Irish McStravick family history? I suspect they are from Northern Ireland and my Grandfather, GGrandfather, and GGGrandfather Francis McStraffic/Hinds match the physical description of what I hear referred to as the "Black Irish" (dark hair, small build, medium skin tone, etc.). ANY connection would be helpful. We're going to the UK and Ireland this summer was hoping to see something of where they lived and were from, etc.

Thanks and sorry so long! This has been a beatdown!

I've been looking and looking -- I know your post is way old but it came up on my search.

My 4th Great Grandfather was a Cornelius McStravick (would have been born probably around the year 1800) and his son, my 3rd Great Grandfather, was Francis aka Frank born in 1835. Frank came to the US from Ireland in about 1860, but he changed his last name to Hines which was his mother Catherine's last name. We can find virtually no trace of them on record, though. My grandfather had thought the spelling was McStraffic. Hines is also a problem because it's spelled so many ways in Ireland.

I'm wondering if your grandfather Cornelius McStravick is a descendant of the same Cornelius McStravick? Just curious what you found out.

Yours truly,

Susan Hines Keckler from Texas
I am looking for information on a Roderick - maybe Rogderick - McStravick. We know he was born around 1810 in Armagh and ended up immigrating to Canada before his death in 1863. He married an Ann Coleman. If anyone has more accurate information about his birth, parents, siblings etc., it would be much appreciated

His wife is Anne coleman. He immigrated to canada in 1851. His children are Mary, Margeret,John, Jacobus and Thomas. I can't find out more information and I would like to continue the family tree.
Scott

I'd love to be able to help you out but since I am now in China it's kind of difficult - I have heard of Cook's Hill and at one point I knew where it was but the memory isn't quite what it was.
Hopefully one of the other members of the clan will help you out.

Slainte

Eugene

Dear Tina,

My name is Nuala McStravick and I am 12 years old. I live in Belfast. I have a sister called Ciara who is nine years old. My father is Pat McStravick and my mother is Sharon McStravick. My great grandfather was Pat McStravick, one of the three professional boxers. His wife Bridget McStravick (nee Kirby) who was my great grandmother died on the 16th December 2011. She was 97 years old. Mary Ann Benson is my great, great, grandmother. My granda Pat McStravick told me today that Mary Ann and John had 9 children in total ( three daughters and six sons). Their names were Nelly, Mary, Lily, Gerry, Joe, Pat, Jim, Terry and John. John was the youngest of the nine children. Pat, Jim and Terry were the professional boxers. The oldest brother Gerry was their manager. As you can see there are three generations of McStravicks called Patrick. My granda Pat told me that Annie and Tony owned a chippy called Valente's. John McStravick is from the Short Strand originally. Can you tell me anymore about the McStravicks? I hope this helps!

Regards,
Nuala McStravick.

Charles McStravick

Hi Cathy, I notice in one of your posts that you mention a Charles McStravick who moved from Ireland to boston. Do you know if he came from Lurgan? Were his siblings John, Kate and Alice (and posibly Simon). Did John marry twice and possibly die as the result of an accident sometime between the 1901 and 1911 censuses? I would be interested in hearing from you about this. Thank You. Adrian

These are my great grandparents. Brigid was Lyons to her own name. They are buried in Maghernagaw graveyard in Derryclone, near aghagallon Co Antrim, about 5 mile outside Lurgan co Armagh. My grandfather was called William Henry, he married Agnes Lyons who died 10 July 1997. He died in 1942. They had 7 children, 6 boys and one girl. My dad is also called William Henry (Liam). He is now 67. They are all living except Eugene who died in November 1996. I am the eldest of 8 children, 2 boys and six girls. William and Agnes are buried with Felix and Brigid in Maghernagaw graveyard. 'where they bury no strangers'. There are loads of us as I am one of 36 grandchildren.
