Your note made me go back to the 1900 Federal Census. Resident at 408 West 54th St in (Manhattan), New York City were:

John McSherry (Head) - my great-grandfather who was born in Ireland in 1861,
his wife, Maggie and their children:
Mary
William (my grandfather)
Maggie, and
Annie.

Boarding with them were 3 men:
Hugh McSherry, born in Ireland in March of 1860 (emigrated in 1889)
James McSherry, born in Ireland in April 1874,
and John McGorty, born in Ireland in April 1874.

Hugh, James and John McGorty are listed as Bartenders.

I think it's probable that my great grandfather was directly related to Hugh and James, but I have no other clues other than the 1900 census.
