It's my husband's family. James W. McPhillips married Mary Braman in the Parish of Eastwoods, County Renfrew, Scotland, St. Mary's Church, September 3, 1874. They lived in Thornliebank
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thornliebank James' father was John and his mother was Mary and Mary's father was Alexander Braman and her mother, Mary. James and Mary emigrated to Rhode Island and named one of their sons Alexander who named his son Alexander and that was my father-in-law. He was away at WWII when my husband was born but told my mother in law, "Don't name him after me!" So, instead of being Alexander Vincent McPhillips, like his father, he's Alexander Scott McPhillips :-) My mother-in-law didn't quite follow the order. So, my husband is known as "Scott." He has three sons and one just had a son whom he named Alexander Charles McPhillips and we're calling him "Chaz".
I have the 1871 and 1881 censuses for Eastwood/Thornlibank/Renfrew and in 1881and the 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 censuses for Providence, Rhode Island. In the 1881 census James and Mary's parents are each listed in their own households, in their 60's, saying they were born in Ireland. I think I have a page somewhere that had what looked to be an older brother with younger siblings, etc. and the older siblings were born in Ireland and James and his suspected younger siblings were born in Scotland.
