Hi Everyone,
My grandmother was Ellen McLinton, who married Joseph O'Reilly in Dublin, 1901. Her father was William McLinton, a British Army Sergeant in the Royal Horse Artillery. He married Rose Mulholland in Portadown, Ireland, in 1865. They had seven children, all born at various Army Barracks: Edward 1867, Cornelius 1869, Rose 1871, Maria 1875, Arthur 1878, Ellen 1879, Henry 1882. I have records of the resulting families of these McLintons, based mostly in the Channel isles but scattered around the world, too!
William McLinton spelled McLindon on his marriage certificate died in service in 1890 at st Heliers. His father was Hugh McLindon or McLyndon of Obins St. Portadown. It is said that their surname may come from MacAllinden - various spellings in what is now Northern Ireland.
Hope to hear from anyone interested.
Dave
