Hi David,

I am not as well versed on the original Irish lineage as others that have been communicating with me on here such as Melinda who has provided some dates via LDS records. What I have picked up is basically from family relatives in Australia who have visited Killyleagh in Ireland and descendants still living there and research they had undertaken there, from gravestone inscriptions in Ireland, Australia and the USA and from physical records I have obtained mainly related to the Australian lineage. I am happy to communicate directly with you via email if you like, I tried to use the direct contact function on this message board to get back to you but it does not seem to work from this end.

The First Killyleagh Presbyterian Cemetery contains a large headstone in memory of John McKelvey (my g.g.g.grandfather) which also lists the deaths of direct family members that remained in the area plus a smaller later headstone. The larger headstone lists the following:

John McKelvey (of Toye) died 29 March 1870 aged 75 years
Ann Orr (his wife) died 21 February 1893 aged 89 years

What I have for his children are as follows, though not all the information is verified:

1 - Daughter Agnes McKelvey b 1823 ?- d 1902 New Jersey (from her brother Alexander McKelvey's headstone New Jersey) appears to have been a spinster.

2 - Daughter Mary McKelvey b. 1826 ?, married Samuel Murdoch in Killyleagh, Ireland and they had a number of children. Samuel and children emigrated to the USA (not sure if Mary made it with him) and as you note he died in California.

3 - Son Rev. Alexander McKelvey b 1827 ?- d 1908 New Jersey (headstone in New Jersey). His wife Hannah Maria (nee Byram) b. 1829- d. 1903; his daughter Lizzie b. 1829- d. 1860; his son John William McKelvey b. 10 Dec 1860 Irvington NJ - d. 18 April 1925 Jersey City (married May Campbell 1891 no children), his bachelor son Alexander Byram McKelvey b. 1864 - d. 1910; son Joseph Orr McKelvey b. 1 Oct 1866 Coxsackie- d. 1938 married Florence Louise (nee Kirby) no children?

4 - Son David McKelvey b. 1832 ??

5 - Son John McKelvey b. 1832 ?? died 17 July 1921 aged 89 at Killyleagh (from main headstone) and appears he never married with no children.

6- Son William McKelvey (my g.g.grandfather who emigrated to Australia on the 'Red Jacket' in 1856) b. 1837?- d.29 Oct 1922 Clunes (Apollo Bay), Victoria, Australia; maried Jane (nee Harris) 1864; son John McKelvey (my g.grandfather) b.1866- d.1921; son William Alexander McKelvey b.1869- d. 1917 South Africa; daughter Susannah Jane (Carter) b.1870- d.1941; son George Robert McKelvey b.1872- d.1957; daughter Edith Margaret (Cawood) d.1873- d.1963; daughter Ann Orr (Costin) b.1877- d.1960; son Charles Edward McKelvey b.1877- d.1952.

7- Son James McKelvey b.1839?- d.14 Jan 1882 aged 43 at Killyleagh (main headstone) (married and had children).

8- Son Joseph McKelvey b.1841?- d.16 July 1914 at Apollo Bay, Victoria; Australia. Married to Augusta and had children in Ireland but appears to have left family and emigrated to Australia on an unknown date).

9- Daughter Frances Bishop McKelvey b.1846?- d.?

10- Daughter Grace B. McKelvey b.1847?- d.20 May 1915 Killyleagh aged 68 (from main headstone) as a spinster?

11- Daughter Martha J. McKelvey b.1852?- d.25 Jan 1937 aged 23 Killyleagh (from main headstone) as aspinster?

Does that help?

Regards
Claude McKelvey

Hi Melinda,

Thankyou so much for getting back to me. I had found the entry for Joseph on Find-A-Grave previously but wasn't sure if that was him. Its a little sad as it would appear that Joseph Orr McKelvey was the last of that McKelvey line as he does not appear to have had children. There is a family gravesite at Morristown, New Jersey that can be found on Find-A-Grave and has a headstone photo. Joseph's parents were the Rev. Alexander McKelvey (a son of John and Ann Orr, Toye, Ireland) and Hannah Maria Byram. The headstone also notes his ister Agnes who also obviously came out from Ireland. He had a sister Lizzie who died as a todler, a brother John William who married but died in 1925 around age 65 and in writing of his life and death his wife does not mention any children, and another brother Alexander Byram who died as a bacheor in 1910 aged around 46.

Joseph had a cousin by the name of John Augustus McKelvey who migrated from Ireland to the US residing in New York it would appear for the rest of his life. He was the son of the Rev. Alexander McKelvey's brother Joseph who despite rumours to the contrary migrated to Australia (and not the US) I think as a form of divorce by distance, dying in 1914 at Apollo Bay, Victoria, Australia.A contact I made in New Jersey found quite a bit of info on John (Jack) Augustus McKelvey. We have a copy of an original letter penned by Jack to his Uncle William (my g.g.grandfather) at Apollo Bay on 1 Sep. 1914 with the letterhead of J. A. McKelvey & Co, Cotton Goods, New York, thanking William for caring for his father. The contact in New Jersey found a passport application by Jack dated 16 June 1921 and at that time he was part of Atterburt & McKelvey, wood pulp and paper mill supplies. In that he noted he was born 21 July 1870, Belfast and emigrated from Londonderry to US on 15 August 1891 (residing 36 years New York) and was naturalised 18 Dec 1917. I found several records of trips to Ireland in Ellis Island records all indicating he was single. I haven't been able to conclusively find evidence to say he did not marry and have any children at any point but more naggingly I have not been able to find a record of his death. If you could provide any assistance in that regard it would be much appreciated.

Also, just wondering with regard the info that you know on Samuel Murdoch, do you have any knowledge as to whether his wife Mary McKelvey also emigrated to the US?

Best stop now, message getting far too long. Again many thanks for the info provided in your last response.

Regards,
Claude McKelvey.

Hi Melinda,

I was wondering if you are still on the message board, If you are Happy New Year for 2015.

t has been a long time since our last correspondence. I had been trying to finalise the Australian connections and left the US side alone for a while. In the last few years I have had a few health issues and now with a little time on my hands again I am revisiting the US McKelvey connections. A son of the Rev Alexander McKelvey from New York moved to California, his name was Joseph orr McKelvey (he was also a Rev but not sure if he took up a posting in California, or retired there or whatever). Last record I had for him was that he was still in Claifornia around 1930 with his wife Florence, I don't believe they had any children.Do you have any suggested methods I could pursue for trying to find more info on him?

Regrads
Claude McKelvey

I'm looking for anyone with information about my great great grandfather- Matthew McKelvey.
He was born in Newburgh NY in 1845 to a John McKelvey and either Agnes or Nancy. It appears he was the only of his family to be born in the US, the rest appear to have been born in Ireland.

He married an Alma and had a son, moved to Kansas and divorced her. They moved back east again. He then married again and had 12 children in Kansas. He is buried in Wamego Ks.

Mostly I am looking for anything before he married the second time. I cannot find much on his first wife/son or parents/siblings.

About 8 years late on the response. Paul was my grandfather, his dads name was John Mckelvy born in Ohio in 1875, Pauls mothers name was Clara Credit born in 1892 also from ohio. Before that you need to go to Pennsylvania to find the family. Johns father was born in Pennsylvania in 1845 His name was Fulton Mckelvy, married to Mary C. Minier.
Paul was in a childrens home with his brothers in Springfield Ohio in the 1930s, I have a document listing them there. The place is still there but they use it as kind of a retirement center. This line starts in Virginia, then to Pennsylvania, onto Ohio.

Rosemary, I should probably clear something up for you. My grandmother was Ruth Ella McKelvey & she married Samuel Andy McKelvy. My grandfather's family came out of Ohio & my grandmothers family came out of New Jersey. So far do not have any connection as to the two families being related. I do have an article that tells how my grandfather & grandmother met. The article was written in 1905. The "E" has bounced back & foth for many years
Larry

I am not from one of the sons, his daughter Ruth Ella was my grandmother. She had two sons & one is my dad. You are right about the Mayhew family & also the Perry family.
Hi Melinda,

Been a bit busy of late but have now found some time to get back into the research. I think I said in my last post that I am wondering whether Mary Murdock (nee McKelvey)made it to the USA with husband Samuel. I was doing a check of gravestone inscriptions for County Down, see link below. If you scroll down about a third there is a Gawn Murdock died Killyleagh, I wonder if he is a relative who Gawn Worth may have been named after?

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/...

There is some info on the LDS Familysearch listings I think deposited by a Melinda Herzog, one of the surnames I think your profile says you are researching. Do you have any idea of a date/year when Gawn Worth's family arrived in the USA?

Cheers,
Claude

Hi Melinda,

I came across the attached document titled 'Lingenfelter Archives' years ago on the internet but I can't recall under what web site. At the time I was searching for any mention of Samuel Murdock and Mary McKelvey and the gain a mention twice in this document through the marriage of two of teir children.

On page 6, in the second column, it is noted that Mary Helen Ashurst (daughter of Robert Ashurst & Elizabeth Bates) marries G. W. Murdock (who I assume is the same Gawn Worth as your ancestor) at Colusa on May 23 1869.

On page 7, in first column, Cain Campbell Bates Ashurst married Mary Ann Murdock at Tehama on Feb. 11 1865.

From what I have been able to discover to date, my g.g.grandfather William, who emigrated to Melbourne from killyleagh in 1856 had about 11 siblings. I know that besides Mary, another brother, Alexander, and a sister, Agnes, migrated to the US. They basically settled exclusively in the NY and NJ area. Agnes died as a spinster while living with her brother Alexander's family and as far as I can ascertain Alexander's line has died out.

The last child of Rev. Alexander's (he was a minister in both the Presbyterian & Reformed churches) was Rev. Joseph Orr McKelvey, who was married to Florence. Joseph's 3 other siblings died without any children. He was a minister in Claremont, California, when his father died in NJ in 1908. In 1917 he made a Passport application and he was then living back in Plainfield, New Jersey where he was a Presbyterian Minister. I believe I have found him in the Us Census of 1900 (Plainfield, NJ), 1920 (Somerset NJ) and then 1930 (Los Angeles, CA) and in all those there are no children listed. I have yet to find a record of their death to check if there were any children.

There is another McKelvey line represented in the US, that of my g.g.grandfather William's brother Joseph. It was originally thought he too went to the US and married and settled in NY and following a divorce moved late in life to Australia to settle at Apollo Bay where his brother resided. I have found though that Joseph married in Ireland to Agusta Fryar and sometime after 3 children were born he left and ventured to Australia. It was his first born son John (Jack) Augustus McKelvey b. 1870 who emigrated to NY. I have found a number of records being passport records and shipping records on him which all appear to indicate he never married or had any children, however, I have yet to find a death record to confirm that.

Anyway, I am probably boring you now so I best go and will hopefully catch up with you soon.

Ooops, I just discovered the file I am trying to attach to the message for you is not accepted as it is in PDF format. Will have to try another time!

Cheers,
Claude McKelvey.

Hi Melinda,

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle, I do believe recall that you were listed on the LDS as the source of the information regarding Samuel and Mary Murdoch (nee McKelvey). I did try and find you many moons ago but without sucess. I do believe that another Australian relative of mine, John and Nancye McKelvey did make contact with you quite some years ago now. I have mainly been researching the Australian line of the McKelvey family but that lead me to researching the connections in the US. There are still a number of family connections that remain unfinalised including Mary Murdock (nee McKelvey)...do you know if she actually emigrated to the US. I would like to send you the information I have gathered to see if you could help fill in the gaps, if you are interested please email me on mtgarnet@hotmail.com

Cheers,
Claude McKelvey

IMMIGRATED: Samuel Murdock came to United States between 1848-1850 and settled near Little Rock Arkensas for 1 year. Them moved to New York State for 6 years, then to California in 1857. Settled in Colusi Co.,eventually that part of Colusi (Colusa) became Glenn Co. settled on what is now (year 1931) the Reed Ranch on Ord Bend River and there he raised stock and farmed. Samuel was illeterate, could not read or write english.

BOOK - COLUSA COUNTY - It's history and resources- printed Orland 1891 by Justtus H. Rogers. found Orland library Sept 2005
Ref. # R-979.433R.
Pg. 249 - April 1 1889 - Samuel Murdock died at the residence of his son G.W. Murdock, near Orland. He was an early settler of the county and was sixty-four years old.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
BURIAL: It has not been determined at this time (1995) where Samuel is buried. If he is buried in the Graves Cemetery near Olimpo (Colusa/Glenn Co.), near Orland, which is a good possibility, there is no head-stone or marker for him. He may have been buried on his son's (Gawn Worth Murdock) ranch of vast acres in that county.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Hope this clears up some of your questions.
Melinda Herzog Landrith

Gawn Worth Murdock b. 6 May 1846 Killinchy, County Down, Ireland was my husbands g-grandfather. He lived in Orland (Glenn County) & Oakland (Alameda) CA. after migrating with his family from Ireland. He was the son of Samuel b. 1824 Killinchy, and Mary (McKelvey b.1828) Murdock. Samuel and Mary m 26 Dec 1845 in Killyleagh, Co. Down, Ireland and had 5 known children of which Gawn Worth Murdock was the oldest. The book is held in Chico (University of California - Chico) College. I do find a few mistakes however in the Murdock part. G.W. (Gawn Worth) and Mary C. (Mary Helen) Ashursts son was not Edward but Edmuund Richardson Murdock. Much of the info. is correct. I will be gone for 4 days.... Will go over the info. while gone. Will return 26th Sept.

George Washington Mckelvey is the last person I can trace in my family. I own a hammer that he made as a blacksmith. My brother has his discharge papers from the cival war framed on his wall. The U.S. Army discharge paper states that he was born in 1837 in Jackson County, PA. The problem is that there is not and never has been a Jackson County, PA. I googled it and found an article that said there was a petition in 1838 to form a Jackson County from parts of Adams County and York County that would be about 200 sq mi. There are many Jackson Townships, and Paradise, PA used to be called Jackson, PA. It could have been a mistake in documentation. If you find any info or have found any info please contact me. thanks. Jon
I have relatives from those areas & I have a Robert in my family but he died at one year old. He had brothers named William, John, Elwood & Benjaman. Had a sister Annglina & Sarah Ann. Just wondering.

Frank McKelvy and Sarah Lee Morris Gibson, TN-->Ohio

I'm hoping to get a bit more information on Sarah Lee Morris, wife of Frank McKelvy and their daughter Sarah Jane McKelvy. Sarah Lee was the daughter of Charlie Morris and Annie Webb. After Charlie died, Annie married Lewis Dee Lawler of Milan, Gibson County, TN. Sarah Lee married Frank McKelvy, had one daughter, Sarah Jane (1919) and they had moved from Milan to Ohio between 1930 and 1941. Frank died in 1947 in Cleveland, OH. I haven't found any more info about Sarah Lee Morris McKelvy or their daughter Sarah Jane. My relationship is through the Morris line (Charlie Morris was my great grandmother's brother)

Looking for McKelvey's in NJ

I am looking to find more information about a
Robert McKelvey 1743-1766. He had a son named Richard McKelvey 1777-1853. Richard married Rebecca Tilton 1786-1860. They had a son William McKelvey 1808-1901. I have some information on a story that William & his brothers Sylvester & Jonathan sailed from Scotland. They were shipwrecked on the coast of New Jersey. One settled in Toms River, another in New York. My Great Great Grandfather is William and he settled in Silverton.

Im looking for more information on this story. I'm also looking for infomation the the brothers father Richard and his grandfather Robert.. Where were they born, did they every come to the US, etc.

Henry McKelvy - Laurens, SC

My ancestor, Martha (UNK) Blakely (1775-1838) was the first wife of Henry McKelvy (1790-1867). I had assumed that Henry McKelvy was the son of John McKelvy (1762-1827) and the brother of Hugh McKelvy (1803-1859), who also lived (and died) in the Laurens County, SC area. However, I recently came across the will of John McKelvy. Although it listed several children, none were named Henry. Does anyone have any information as to the identity of Henry's parents? Hopefully if anyone has information about Henry, they might also know something about his first wife Martha (UNK) Blakely. I am a descendant of her daughter Margaret (1802-1844), child of Martha's first marriage to Jonathan Blakely (1745-1809).
