My McGurks were in Scotland from 1825+/- to 1860

Emilia “Emily” Brown, a sister of John and James Brown, had married James McGurk of Armagh County, Ireland in Edinburgh, Scotland, 1831. “Emily was a beautiful young girl with Blue eyes and curly black hair who married James McGurk, a Catholic, and a handsome young blade. They were married in Ireland and they emigrated to Dumfirlane, Scotland. Emily was a “rock-ribbed” Presbyterian who raised her family to be Presbyterians. James and Emily's three children were born in Dunfermline, Scotland: Andrew McGurk @ 1833, Jane McGurk @1835, and Catherine McGurk@ 1837. Emily came to the U.S. late in the fall of 1860 with her two children, Andrew and Kate(Catherine), and a sister Dolly Brown. They came in a sailing vessel (Aurora) and were six weeks making the trip and arrived 18 OCT 1860 (from Scotland/Liverpool) . At first they located at Point Pleasant, Guernsey County, now Pleasant City, Ohio. Later they moved to Summerfield, Ohio.

Hello from Chicago,

I have been looking for possible relationships among McGurks (from Tyrone) who lived in Illinois and of their descendents who moved West.

A Michael McGurk, born in Ireland in 1855 and died in Minneapolis about 1909 lived for a while in Philadelphia in 1860s and 1870s. His father appears to have been James who died in 1868? Michael had at least three siblings Catherine who died in Philadelphia in 1885, John who died in 1866 and James in 1872.

My McGurks were from Dunnamore Townland in Kildress Parish. Two of the McGurk sisters married Loughrans from Kildress. The Loughrans were not related. Charles was from Beaghbeg and Michael from Dungate.

There were about seven John McGurks in Illinois in 1880s on. In addition to Chicago, John McGurks were found in Joliet, Springfield, Champaign and Evanston.. I have also done a little work tracing McGurk women who married or lived in Chicago.

John E Corrigan

Joseph McGurk

I've been trying to research the McGurk's on my dad's side of the family. I've been told that there is 5-6 generations of Joseph McGurk's ending with my brother. But I have only gotten back to my great grandfather who was a Joseph McGurk. Past that I'm not sure. What i do know is that my great grandfather , Joseph McGurk, was born on December 7,1920. He married a Jane Southwick. Later on they got divorced and Jane got remarried to a George Rice. I've been told by one of my uncles that my great grandfather's father was John McGurk. My father and I have reason to believe though that my great grandfather's father's name was Joseph McGurk.I do know that my great grandfather's mother was Ruth Williams and her father was John Williams. Ruth and John/Joseph McGurk had:

Joseph McGurk (my Great Grandfather)
Doris Naus(born McGurk)
and John McGurk.

Joseph (my great gradfather)and Jane had:
Joseph T. McGurk (my grandfather)
Elial McGurk
Gary McGurk
And John (Jack) McGurk

Joseph T. and my grandmother Silvia J.Sutton had
Joseph McGurk (my father)
Pamela McGurk
and Christy McGurk

Joseph McGurk(my dad) and My mom Tabitha Jacobs Had
Jaime (me)
Joseph (my brother)
Heidi
Johnathon
And Sean

This is all the information I have at the moment. If any body else has any information, I would greatly appreciate it.

McGurks from Tyrone and Renfrewshire Scotland

I am looking for relatives of my family who came to PHilaelphia in the late 1800's. They are brothers Joseph and Terrance McGurk. Joseph was born September 26, 1871 and Terrance was born August 25, 1861. They were the children of Edward McGurk and Bridget Mallon. It seems they were originally from Tyrone but living in Renfrewshire Scotland when they left. I believe there are still relatives in Scotland. Children of Ellen I believe.
Hugh, Ellen, Elizabeth, Mary and Edward were siblings.

new information McGurk McGuirk Mallon

I would like to know if this rings a bell with anyone. My grandfather Joseph J McGurk (born in Tyrone possibly Dungannon) had a brother Terrance McGurk. They immigrated to Philadelphia around 1890. According to Terrance's death certificate the parents were Bridget Mallon and Edward McGurk. They may have also had a sister Ellen but I cannot confirm. I have also seen spellings like McGuirk. thanks andrea

I have at least one McGurk from Tyrone

Looking for family of James McGURK, born circa 1800 we believe in either County Tyrone or County Armagh.

James married Emilia "Emily" Brown in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1831.

James and Emily's three children were born in Dunfermline, Scotland:

Andrew McGurk @ 1833, Jane McGurk @1835, and Catherine McGurk @ 1837. James McGurk is rumored to have left his wife
for another woman, and returned home to Ireland.

Emily and children emigrated to the U.S. in Fall 1860.

Emily's BROWN siblings: Elizabeth (O'Neil), Samuel, David, James, Dolly, John, and possibly Susannah (McGowin).

James McGURK is supposed to have died in the 1880's, but we have no proof.

Looking for information on his birth, death, family, etc.

Emilia “Emily” Brown, a sister of John and James, had married James McGurk of Armagh County, Ireland in Edinburgh, Scotland, 1831. “Emily" was a beautiful young girl with Blue eyes and curly black hair who married James McGurk, a Catholic, and a handsome young blade. They were married in Dumfirlane, Scotland. Emily was a “rock-ribbed” Presbyterian who raised her family to be Presbyterians.

James deserted his family and ran off with another woman to Ireland (sometime between 1837 and 1841?) . Hard times and depression followed. Members of James’ family came to Scotland and offered to help Emily and her family, but she was too proud to accept. James was taken back into his family in Ireland, whether the woman was also we do not know. He were told he died around the late 1880’s. Emily was persuaded by her brothers to bring her family to the United States. ” Emily and children emigrated to the U.S. in Fall 1860. The 1841 census in Scotland shows Emilia McGURK as a widow, but that may have been a face saving measure.

Later they moved to Summerfield where Emily’s brother, John Brown, lived.

Anyone have info on this line of McGurks? I have the info from 1860 forward.

It is most probable that James McGurk was Catholic. Since they make a point of his wife's relgion and that he ran off with a "Young Catholic girl" one would imagine that James McGurk from Tyrone or Armagh was Catholic also.

Margaret apparently grew up with them in Bellshill area of Scotland before apparently marrying an Italian.
Can anyone help me trace Margaret McGurk from 1918.
Thanks Margaret

Patrick McGurk

Looking for descendants of the above family. Patrick McGurk married Rose or Roseana (we believe her mainden name may have been Macaughey). We know they had 1 son called Leo (Leo J/Leonard). They lived in Edgley St. Philidelphia between about 1917 to 1950/60's. Are you a descendant of this family or do you know what happened to this family. We would appreciate any information regarding these people.
Looking for my brother's ancestors. Grandmother's Maiden Name: Mary "Molly" Veronica McGurk dob 12 Oct 1908, Belfast N. Ireland, later married Hollis Alden Drake, moved to Michigan and then eventually California. Throughout this time they had 5 children Daniel, John (deceased), Tom, Eleanor, & Monica Drake...Our grandmother Mary died in 1998 here in California. Any info on the McGurks from Ireland from that time to present would be greatly appreciated. We know our Grandmother Mary had relatives living there into the late 1990's when she passed, but we never knew their names. My brother Daniel now lives In Basingstoke England, and would love to find any living relatives. Thanks so much, Angela.
