Re: looking for information on McGrane families with County Cavan origions (Ireland)

Hello

I am most probably giving you information you already have though I note on your tree you don't have John McGaughran assuming I have the correct family. (Ancestry shows a record transcript of his baptism/birth detail from a FHL film birthdate 27 Jan 1868 born to Bernard McGaughran and Mary Sheridan). I have attached the census returns of 1901 and 1911 for the McGaughran family at Ardleny. Also I have attached screenshots of broad search I did on rootsireland.ie for children of Bernard and Mary (Sheridan) McGaughran. And a broad search for possible Bernards baptised between 1833 and 1847. Its difficult to be sure these are your family members without buying the docs which will beggar you but it might give you an idea!

I am a McGrane and finding getting back beyond my gt gt grandfather difficult, looks like they originated in County Dublin but its possible they lived elsewhere before that. Anyway I tend to pursue most mcgrane queries just in case they connect with my own family!

I hope I have been of some use to you.

My second great grandmother was Anne McGreane nee Dagget. She is buried in old Saint Matthew's Cemetery in Shullsburg, WI. SW Wisconsin McGreane's did, at times, spell their last name with different variations. This is the spelling I grew up with. She was widowed when she came to New Diggings Wisconsin with her children. Her husband's name was James. Her children's names were Ann, John, James, William, Margaret. Her sons bought farm land in Shullsburg, Wisconsin area and they became farmers. I was told by my grandmother Mary Catherine Connell, nee McGreane, that some of the family relatives had migrated to the Des Moines Iowa area. You may well know this information. My cousin Rose Derocher has done extensive research on the McGreane family. If not, I would like to hear from you. Shirley

What part of Ireland are you planning to visit?
I was looking at a Dublin site as I think that is a good place to start and it sounds like they recommend you set up an appointment to visit? Not sure how far inb advance you have to do that though.

Well that is strange, I even double checked and I typed the address correct, I've had this email since 1997. :-) Always worried I might miss out on someone hunting me down for family info. That is great about going to Ireland. I have hit several brick walls researching New Jersey and Dublin Ireland whe it comes to the McGrane line. There is another McGrane line in Iowa (Owen) and I am trying to connect to that. From what I found Ann (widowed) came from New Jersey to Lafayette County to be near her brother in 1842. Looking in 1850 census there are other McGranes that live here too. One family also has kids born in New Jersey as well as New York. Do you have any pictures on the McGranes? The oldest ones I have is John McGrane (son of James and Ann McGrane, John was married to Mary Rooney), I have portraits of John and Mary and a family picture with some of there kids and some of Mary (Rooney) McGrane when she was elderly with her house and her two boys that lived with her as they never married. Do you plan to do any McGrane searching when your in Ireland?

It's been a long time since I've done any research on this family, hence the very long response time. I know nothing of William McGrane's ancestry aside from banking records showing he was born in Baldoyle, Dublin though my husbands grandmother did say the family were from Meath which is basically the same area. Jane Skelton is a mystery as well though I did see a Richard Skelton & Anne Leghorn did have a couple of children of that name. Not sure of that though as none of William & Jane's issue bore those christian names which was the norm back then. Would certainly welcome hearing from you... my email is vandemonia@gmail.com ...
Cheers! Veronica

Hi Rose - I tried to email you using the address you noted in your post, but it got bounced back as an invalid address. I’d be happy to share any information I have that you don’t, though I think you are way, way ahead of me on this. I did get some information from my uncle Marty McGrane when my boys were doing their family history project two years ago, and I believe even his information referenced the work you’d already done. We’re planning a family trip to England and Ireland this summer – my daughter will have her family history project next school year, so trying to get a jump on that this time around! Let me know what gaps you’re trying to fill – thanks so much!
And did she go by Liz? and live with her sister Grace?
I had hoped to trace back to find a grandparnet who was born in Ireland, but, I have not had much luck. If we are family, you may know. Let me know. Where do you live? I do not remember hearing of a couple Richard and Bridget, my parents were James and Mary. Hope we can connect.

Elizabeth Ann McGrane had 3 older brothers but no sisters. She was born in 1858 in Irish Grove, Illinois. She married Matthew Hale DeFord in 1882 in Charles City, Iowa. They had 8 children but only 4 survived infancy. One was my grandmother, Mary Elizabeth. The others were Rose Allene, John and Paul.

I doubt there is a connection with our family but I found it interesting that a story passed down in our family is that "James McGrane was a sailor and sailed the boats between Ireland and the U.S. He did this while he was a young man and when he was about 40 years old he finally decided to stay in the U.S. He heard from his folks once that his mother had died and never heard from his family again." James was born in about 1830 in Ireland and is my great-great grandfather. eldale@huntel.net

The spelling of Mc Grean I trace backto 1841.I was told that when they came to the U.S. They spelled the name the way it sounded. Heard that 3 brothers came to Ia. got into a fight and 2 brothers changed the splling from Grean to Grane. That is all I know and hope that it helps.

McGrane of Montreal/Ireland/USA

I am looking for some information on the McGrane side of the family. I have hit a dead end with the McGrane clan. My gggrandmother was Ellen McGrane, born abt. 1842 Ireland died 1917 Montreal, Quebec.
According to the 1901 Cdn. Census she immigrated to Canada in 1860. She married in 1864 William Murray, who died in Montreal in 1884. Her parents were listed as already deceased at the time of her marriage. Her father was listed as William McGrane, a labourer, and her mother was listed as Mary Ann Doherty, late of County Louth, Ireland. This tells me that her mother probably died in Ireland.

Ellen and William, had the following children:
William James Murray b.1864 Montreal
Thomas Murray b. 1867 USA...why were they in the USA?
Ellen Murray b.1869 Montreal (my great grandmother)
Mary Ann Murray b.1871 Montreal
Amelia Murray b. 1873

I haven't seen the McGrane name in any of the children's baptism or marriage records, so I think that Ellen was possibly alone in Montreal. Perhaps she had family in the states as her son Thomas was born in the USA, but no location is listed.
Any leads would be most appreciated.
thanks.

What a surprise after 9 years. I have not been as active in my genealogy research but getting this message sure gives me a boost. If correct your husband Frank's paternal grandmother,Elizabeth Gaffney Lee and my father, John Aloyuis Gaffney were brother and sister. Elizabeth (Aunt Lid to us) spent every holiday with my family. Aunt Lid lived with her sister Josephine (Aunt Jo). They had a few chickens at their home in Bardonia, NY. My sister Mary lives in Bardonia today and I think of Aunt Lid and Aunt Jo every time I pass the old house.I had sent letters to various Frank McGrane's with no reply. I am presently not subscribed to Ancestry.com so I was surprised it gave the right to reply to your posting. If there is any additional info Frank would like to have just let me know. Thanks

You found him. He is my husband. He is 68 and in okay health. We have been living in Vienna, Missouri for the past six years. Prior to that he lived in Virginia, Seattle, San Francisco, Florida, North Carolina, New Jersey, and New York (in reverse order). He has been married twice (I am the second wife) and has one son, adopted, from his first marriage. He has four half siblings from his mother's second marriage. As you know, his biological father was killed in World War II and his father's father was killed in World War I. His father's mother owned a small, not very active farm, along the Hudson River in New York, where she lived with her sister/daughter (not sure if the sister/ aunt was the grandmother's sister or sister in law).

They emigrated to the USA before March 1857 when their 1st child Edward was born in Massachusetts,a 2nd Thomas was born in Kentucky in 1859 and a 3rd George in New York in 1864.They appear in the 1860 Census for Cicinnati, Ohio. I can find no other records. Both were born in Ireland prior to 1857. Any help will be appreciated.
