I don't know if we are related in some way but I am also descended from McDonalds who were from VA>OH>IN.
My ancestor is Greenberry McDonald and I believe he was born in Scotland and emigrated to VA with his parents. I do not know his parents names. Greenberry married _ Drum and they had at least two sons, one of whom was George b 1799 in Frederick Co., VA. George married Nancy Ann Lovitt and they moved to Muskingum Co., OH. Some of their descendants then moved on to Sullivan Co., IN. Does any of this match with your family info.? Thanks.
