RE: Rose A. McDevitt / McDaid

Hi,

Has anyone come across a Rose A. McDevitt / McDaid (my great grandmother) in their searches, or have any information on her?

Rose A. McDevitt / McDaid born Abt. sometime during the1860's in Urrismanagh, Clonmany, County Donegal, Ireland.
Rose's parents were Patrick McDevitt / McDaid and her mother was Mary O'Donnell of Leenanmore, County Donagel, Ireland, and married abt 1860 in Urrismanagh, Clonmany, County Donegal, Ireland.
I don't know when she (Rose) immigrated to the USA, but she married Martin J. Griffin ( of Ireland) on May 2, 1897 in Boston, Massachusetts. Rose A. McDevitt/ McDaid - Griffin died on Aug. 23, 1957 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Rose & Martin J. Griffin had 5 children, Mary Ellen, James Patrick, John Joseph, Martin Francis and Rose E. Griffin. They raised their children in Charlestown, Suffolk County, Boston, Massachusetts.

When, I seen my great grandmother's Rose McDevitt's baptismal record, I found out her maiden name is spelled McDaid and not McDevitt as it was spelled once she immigrated to the United States.

Would love to hear from anyone with information on this McDevitt / McDaid Family or anyone with information on Rose's mother Mary O'Donnell's family.

I have attached a copy of Rose McDaid 's Baptismal Record as well as copy of her parents Patrick McDaid & Mary O'Donnell's marriage record.

As you can see from these records the spelling of Rose's maiden name is not spelled as McDevitt as it was in the United States, but instead it is spelled as McDaid.

Jen Griffin-Orpen of Charlestown, Suffolk County, Boston, Massachusetts

I found an unusual number of McDevitt's buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in East Orange NJ. I found a Catherine McCauley who was buried there that died in Manhattan. In the marriages for for New York I believe this Catherine is the same as Catherine McDevitt age 19 who married Daniel McCauley in Manhattan 17 Nov. 1912 he was 36 years old. Catherine died 23 Dec. 1912.
The information regarding their parents as listed: Catherine McDevitt parents Henry McDevitt and Catherine Loughery. Daniel McCauley parents Edward McCauley and Hanna Kelly. Catherine McDevitt was born in Clady, Co Tyrone her mother Catherine Loughery was born in Upper Roosky, Co Donegal. Her father Herry McDevitt was born in Clady, Co Tyrone. Anyone that thinks they may have a connection please contact me.

I am trying to find the marriage of John McDevitt to Isabella McGee in the Philadelphia area around 1848 to 1856. They bhad two children (John 1851?and George 1855?)both born in the United States according to the New Brunswick (Canada) 1881 census. I have been trying to locate this marriage for years with no luck.

Hi Wendy,

I hope this email finds you. I realize I'm a decade to late, but what the hell. The names that you have here, may well be part of my family as well. My Grandfather was Edward McDevitt and I think he might have been born in Owey. Not 100% sure, never met anyone other than my dads brothers and sisters. if you get this, please reply.

Sean McDevitt

Thank you for looking into it. My email is fdrn89@gmail.com

I know many McDevitt's were from the Inishowen Peninsula in Donegal, just outside Derry City, so I always wondered if they were actually from Donegal, not Derry. The main thing that leads me to believe they were from Derry is the fact that John McDevitt listed his occupation as a locksmith. Probably not too many locksmith's in the "countryside" of Donegal. Then again, he could have been lying on the ship's register, to ease his entry into the U.S.

Thanks again!

Rob McDevitt

Hi! I am also of McDevitt lineage, though mine settled in Newark, NJ. However, some did, in later years, move to Brooklyn.
I believe my McDevitts are from Derry as well. I am not familiar with John, who married Ann McGinley, but I know in my McDevitt research I have come across the name McGinley - I will have to go through my stuff. My 3rd great grandmother was Sarah McDevitt, with siblings: James, Dennis, Daniel, Catherine, Ellen, William, possibly and Edward, and Rosanna. Their parents were Daniel, a shoemaker and Catherine Dever.
It is possible that our McDevitts are related, then again, maybe not. But I shall try to find out where I came across the name McGinley and see if it will be of any help to you. If you prefer to communicate via email, let me know.
Susan Helber, New Jersey

John McDevitt(Sr.) and Ann McDevitt(nee McGinley)sailed to NY in 1850 with three children, William, John and Rose. They lived in Brooklyn NY. At some point they returned to Ireland/England where Margaret was born (in 1855). They then return to NY (Brooklyn),sometimes using McDade/McDaid and had two more children, Catherine and Hugh. Most of the family is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn. Still searching for John McDevitt(Sr.) and their hometown or parish. Ship records stated John McDevitt was a locksmith. Any possible information would be helpful. Thanks!
OK, I'll jump into this group of McDevitts of Glenties!
Line I'm working on is Anthony (1825-1917 Largnalarkin) and wife Hannah Timoney McDevitt (1833-1914 Largnalarkin). Most of their children came to US, but some stayed in Ireland and have tracked down most of them.
Our line are the group who came as near as I can tell nearly immediately to San Francisco. Many worked as bakers here.
Would LOVE to have the cemetery pic offered on this thread. I was trying to find Anthony and Hannah's parents of course.

Hello, I am in need of HELP!! I am searching for any information on my 3rd Great Grandfather John McDevitt born about 1838. I believe that he left Ireland in 1860 on a ship called 'Zered' out of the port of Londonderry, arriving in Philadelphia, PA.

Once in the United States he married Margret McCormick and he went by the nickname of "Red". If anyone can point me in some direction as to where to go to find out more about 'Red' I would appreciate it. I am traveling to Glenties this summer and would love to be able to track down more information then.

Thank you,

Katherine O'Neill McDevitt-Adams

My grandmother Joan is speculated to have committed suicide. Good luck in your search for your ancestor. They are not one in the same.

Paul Lynde, the famous comedian and also a native of Mount Vernon, once offered him a job as a writer after hearing him speak.
He and his wife spent their retirement traveling in Europe on land tours and then progressed to cruising across the Atlantic many times and visiting countries around the Mediterranean. After a long cruise to South America, their last cruise, they concentrated on PT for Bob. He was a really genuine person and never lost the values he learned growing up in the Great Depression era.

At Bob’s request, there will be no services.

Covell Crematory is handling the cremation and his cremains will be in the Sarasota National Cemetery.

Donations in his memory may be made to the NeuroChallenge Foundation, 5880 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL, 34238 or Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County. 201 North Mulberry Street, Mount Vernon, Ohio, 43050

Can anyone tell me if Harry S. McDevitt (1885-1950?) and Phillip Richard McDevitt are related to Helen Jane McDevitt O'Shea?

There is a longstanding rumor in my family that my grandmother Helen Jane McDevitt O'Shea (1894?-1940) is the daughter of Phillip Richard McDevitt (1858-1935) And the brother of Harry Sylvester "Hanging Harry" McDevitt.

Phillip R. McDevitt was head of the Catholic school system in Philadelphia PA from 1899-1915, he is credited with turning a dysfunctional school system into one that was known for it's excellence. In 1915 He was named head of the Harrisburg PA Archdiocese which he ran until his death in 1935 and has two Catholic high schools named after him, one in Harrisburg PA and the other in Wyncote PA.

Harry S. McDevitt was a longstanding political figure of the Philadelphia area. From about 1916 to 1919 he was assistant State Attorney General of PA. From 1919 to 1922 he was Sectrary of the Commonwealth. And from 1922 until his death he was President Judge of Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas #1.

Any information that you provide will be most welcome.
