McDevitt/McGinley- Derry to Brooklyn

Posted: 20 Aug 2014 8:12PM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: McDevitt, McDade, McDaid, McGinley
John McDevitt(30) and Ann McDevitt(20) nee McGinley sailed to N.Y. on the ship Clutha, 6/8/1850.John was listed as a locksmith.

They sailed with three children: William(5), John(3) and Rose(9m).

They settled in Brooklyn, N.Y.

They must have returned to Ireland around 1855. They had a child, Margaret, listed as being born in England.

They returned to Brooklyn N.Y.before 1866 because they had another child,Catherine, born in Brooklyn in 1866.

It seems that when they returned to Brooklyn, the family
name was changed to McDade.

They had another child, Hugh, born in 1869.

Many are buried in Holy Cross cemetery in Brooklyn N.Y.
and many death notices in the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper say: "Londonderry papers pick up".

Cant find John McDevitt/McDade Sr....And not sure where in Ireland this family came from.

Plenty of McDevitt's still in and around Brooklyn.

Thanks for any help!
