I would love to hear more about these letters! I have McCutchen's obituary, and it says he moved to Exeter in 1867. It doesn't tell what his occupation was in California. One source cites him as a teacher in Gilmer County, WV before the war. He never married and had three nieces in California. He died on 27 Sept., 1915 and had two brothers, Benson and Robert in Virginia.

There is some information on this family in the book "The Cartwrights of San Augustine." I have a copy and can do lookups. There was a son, James D. (Deloach), and a daughter, Mary. I have found information on James D., but have not been able to locate information about Mary.

I know of some McCutchans who settled in Exeter, Tulare County, California in the mid 18th century. Don't know about your J. S. K. McCutchan, but a very distant cousin named Cynthia Tennessee Brooks married a John Franklin McCutchan in 1871. That's all I know. At least I can correct the spelling of the town and county! John Franklin McCutchan was born in Virginia and died in 1911 in California.

Re: McCutchanville, IN ?

I grew up in McCutchanville, IN 1938-1956. Still visit every summer. Went to McCutchanville Methodist Church and McCutchanville School (grad. 1952).
McCutchanville is north of the present airport (off IN Hwy 57 on Old Petersburg Rd.) about 3-4 miles. The church has three cemetaries surrounding it. Ken McCutchan (died 2002) wrote a couple books about McCutchanville and Vanderburgh County. Both the church and school are still standing. The school is used as a community place and for the volunteer fire department.
The old church is listed as a historic structure and is supposed to be kept up. The current congregation meets in an education building that was build in the 60s. The old structure is now over 100 yrs old. If wished I do have some photos of both places I could send via e-mail attachment.
Neil

Gail,
the following is an excerpt from a letter dated 23 May 1999 from Kenneth P. McCutchan:
"...William McCutchan (1801-1843) was married to Desire Benjamin (1805-1881). Did you know that William's brother John McCutchan (1802-1840) was married to Hester A. Benjamin (1804-1881). John Hester are buried in McCutchanville Cemetery. I am guessing that these two Benjamin girls were sisters, who lived with the Erskine family."

My husband is descended from William and Desire.

Shirl

McCutchan

Have been searching for the Co. Meath family (McCutchan, McJohnston and Vickerstaff) for over 30 years. I believe that the McCutchans of Scotland were part of the Clearances (Ulster Plantation)that relocated farmers to Ireland in the early 17th century. Proof is hard to find. Kenneth McCutchan (author and historian) believed they came from Annandale in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, then to Ireland. Although he found many McCutchans living in Ireland about 1810 to 1850 he stated there were no families of that name in Ireland as of 1969. Perhaps if we pool what we know we can get this research a few steps further. Julie (McCutchan) Moes EJMOES@aol.com

I have in my family records information on the founding of McCutchanville and its first school. I am descended from Marcus McCutchan and Emily Voight (Vogt) (my great grandparents) and Anna Matilda McCutchan (my grandmother).

I have a monograph by Mary Perry Johns written on July 4, 1917 describing the history of Mccutchanville School from its beginning in 1834 to 1917. In it there is some description of the founding of McCutchanville.

I have been trying to track down birth records but there is nothing listed until after 1882 and my grandmother, etc. were born sooner. They say contact Catholic Churches, but my family appears to be Methodist. So if anything I can would be of help I will forward it to you.

Sally Wiger
Hello,
I have been going over our family records and according to my records, Marcus McCutchan is my great grandfather. His daughter, Anna, is my grandmother. The information I have read on the message boards agree with the information I have in my family monologue from the early 1900s. I do not have any pictures, however. I have never been to McCutchanville, Indiana (is it still there?) and am trying to fill out our records. My mom and all her siblings have died so I have no one to verify names with. Any information you would like to share would be appreciated. Thanks!

Which McCutchan is Which in Floyd Co. IN?

I have searched the gedcoms on Rootsweb for my husband's 2nd great grandmother, Susannah McCutchan of Floyd Co. Indiana. There seem to more of that surname (and its variants) in Floyd Co. that one can shake a stick at. Her father is given as Samuel Finley McCurchan but some give her mother as Susan Mowry and others as Susan Winegar. Is anyone out there aware of dates of marriages for Samuel? I have been unable to locate Susanna's death record (they didn't start keeping them regularly soon enough in Indiana) nor anything that would give me any documentation of her parents.

I do have information on Susanna and her descendant after her marriage to Henry Searls/Sarles, and if anyone would like it will be glad to share.

I am searching for family members of Mr. McCutchan. He according to the letters I have, moved to California after the civil war and I think went into sheep farming. Some of this info may not be correct. If I read them correctly, they were from a place called Exetes, California in Tulane or Tulase County. Anyone know of this person, please contact me. Thanks in advance for any responses. The letters that I have were written by him to my ggg Uncle Christian Kuhl. Chrisitan had served under Cap. McCutchan and they had become very good friends. The first letter was written around the time of the great California earthquake in 1903 maybe!

Hi, Our name is McCutcheon, but only 2 gens back it appears as McUtchen on some certificates and reverts back on others for the same person. Evidently the name was spoken to the scribe who then wrote it as he heard it. ? Makes our hunting more difficult doesnt it? :)
Family Bible of William & Mary McCutchan

The last will and testament of William McCutchan (1775-1836) mentions a large family Bible, which he left to his widow, Mary Ann McCutchan. After William's death, Mary Ann McCutchan stayed in McCutchanville, Indiana and lived with her son, George Bond McCutchan. The mystery is what became of the Bible after her death in 1858. I discussed this with Kenneth P. McCutchan several times over the years, and he could shed no light on it. If located, this Bible could possibly provide valuable genealogical information such as the names of William McCutchan's parents. Any information on the location of the subject Bible would be appreciated.

William M.
