Hello, I realize this post is over 10 years old, but I'm Mary McCrary (McCroskey)s great great great grandson. Would you happen to have ANY information (like access to a marriage certificate if they had them back then), or ANYTHING that says who her husband, Joseph McCrary's father was??

Hello! I'm married to Craig McCroskey, whose father, V.Donald "Don" McCroskey was born in Bristol,VA. He spells the name with 2 lines under the little c, which he thinks has some significance to the original clan, though we don't know the clan. Does anyone else have this tradition?

andreac@abstractmail.com

I know that Edward was married to a woman named Georgia. I know his mother was Kate and his father was Dave Jr. His sister was Mary and she had a daughter Emily that I was in contact with for several years. I even got to meet her about 6 years ago. I was supposed to go back and meet with her again and she was going to give me somethings of Edwards and the family but she has since passed away.:( I also know that Edward fell off a building/house while painting it and died from his injuries. Would like to know if he was a drinker... and really any other details she may be able to remember. Peggy... which is a second cousin said that Edward also did paintings and had taken art classes. I wish I could find one of his paintings now. Thank you so much for all your help!

This is correct info. I have word document compiled by Warren McCroskey referencing this name and orgin. Has extensive data for John and Elizabeth McCroskey. These are suppose to be the original McCroskey's to America. If you would like me to share any particular data or the doucment please email. Looked up Wood family there is a Wood branch but does not appear to be the same as mentioned in your posted message.

Courtesy of Warren McCroskey -

"A New York Public Library reference "The Surnames of Scotland" gives the name as originating from MacCoscrach, son of Coscrach (victorious, from the Latin 'coscur', victory) and indicates that there were MacCoscrach names mentioned in land transactions back as early as 1217. (Later information indicates they were part of the clan Buchanan-WNM 4/3/2006)" - Warren McCroskey
H C McCROSKEY Dead 1914 in OK

...from the newspaper archives in Oklahoma City, OK:

The Daily Oklahoman
Tuesday
11-03-1914
p. 6/10

Owner of Valuable Oil Land at Yale Reaped Few Benefits

YALE, Okla., Nov.2 -(Special)-

H C McCroskey, who died in Oklahoma City Saturday night, was
the owner of the farm here known in the oil world as the
McCroskey farm, and on which the Alice Kathryn company well
No.1 is located. The McCroskey farm is the northwest quarter
of section 7-19-6; one and one-half miles north of Yale.

Misfortune seems to have followed McCroskey through life.
Several years ago his 2-year-old child fell from a wagon, the
wheels of which crushed out the child's brains, and a short
time before the accident McCroskey lost another child, which
was burned to a crisp.

McCroskey's death recalls the fact that he was the second person
here to die just as a fortune was almost within his grasp, after
having lived most of his time in circumscribed circumstances.

William Fisher, who died two weeks ago, was the owner of a farm
here in which is located the largest oil well in the mid-continent
field, having come in recently at more than 9,000 barrels daily.
On the Fisher farm are four other large oil wells, known as
the C.B. Shaffer wells.

***posted for genealogical purposes only; no relation***

Well that sounds about right. My father is a recovering alcoholic. I heard that his father that I was looking for fell off a roof while painting and died... They say he may have been drunk. I will look and see if I can find anything on him in my notes.

Thank you! Yes I did have most of that info. I think he had another brother too. I can't think of his name but have it in my notes. I was wondering how you found the details of his death. Do you know the family directly? I had heard this from Mary's daughter Emily. Thanks again for taking time to pass on the info.

Hello Mcrosky,

My name is Daisy Cordiner, I used to be married to Roger's son Scott. I knew Sally Cordiner. She was an amazing woman! Roger used to talk about his Uncle 'Dutch' and how he was a pilot in WWI, etc. I am on good terms with Roger, (not so much with Sue) if you have a question I can try to find out the answer for you... I can't gaurantee alot, as I say I am a "former" member of the family. If you have more information on Sally, I would appreciate any help. I am trying to put together a family tree for my children.

Good Luck!

William J. McCroskey of Valley View Texas

William J. Mc Croskey

In his comfortable home in Valley View, William J. Mc Croskey is enjoying a well earned retirement, and can look back upon forty-three years of residence in North Texas, most of it at that time having been spent in the toil and practical management of farming and stock raising, out of which in spite of many adverse conditions, he achieved a prosperity for sufficient for his declining years.

Mr. Mc Croskey, who is an ex-Confederate soldier, was born in Sullivan County, Tennessee, March 1, 1837. His grand-father, James Mc Croskey was of Irish ancestry and spent his last years on a farm in what is now West Virginia. James Mc Croskey married a Miss Duff, and several of their decendants subsequently bore the Christian Name of Duff.

Mathew Mc Croskey, father of the Valley View citizen, was born in Virginia, was a farmer and also a Methodist minister. He married Elizabeth Hickey, lived for many years in Tennessee, and in 1843 moved to Green County Missouri, and spent the rest of his life in the southwestern part of that state. His children were ten in number: Rachel, who married Benjamin Patterson; Jane wife of Joe Merritt; Margaret, second wife of Joe Merritt; Martha who married John Mc Croskey; William J. of Valley View; Mrs. Mary Barnes; Amanda who died unmarried; Mrs. Ellen Glenn; Charlotte, who married Hamilton Doran; and Duff who lives on the old farm in Missouria.

William J. Mc Croskey was six years of age when his parents moved to the vicinity of Springfield Missouria. He grew up on a farm in that rugged district and farming was the vocation which he took up when he became of age. The Mc Croskey home was within four miles of the battlefield of Wilson Creek, and those at home could clearly hear the sounds of that battle. Soon afterwards William Mc Croskey entered the Confederate army.

He was wounded in the fight at Corinth and taken prisoner, later paroled and sent to the hospital for wounded Confederates at Iuka, and after recovering he rejoined his command at Vicksburg. He was in service until the end of the war, and following that worked several months for wages as a farm hand in Illinois. Returning to Missouria he located in Saline County and was a farmer in that rich and prosperous section of central Missouria until he came to Texas.

When he left Saline County in 1877 he had a family of wife and four children. They traveled with two wagons and teams and made the thousand mile journey without incident in about four weeks. Two other children were born after they came to Texas. Mr. Mc Croskey located five miles southeast of Valley View. His land comprised 280 acres, practically virgin soil and it was the task of many years to develop it into a productive general farm.

His first home contained only two rooms, and out of necessity this had to be sufficient until he had the money to build a better one. Mr. Mc Croskey was not a capitalist when he came to Texas and he had to realize something from his labors every season in order to maintain his family. For three years he gave his time exclusively to the raising of grain. In later years he planted a limited crop of cotton.

For his land he paid only five dollars an acre and added to his holdings until he had more than half a section. Forty years ago Cooke County was more of a stock region than strictly farming country. Few of the farms were fenced and there was an almost unlimited range for liveing stock. Mr. Mc Croskey utilized some of this pasture for his modest ventures as a stock man and he never was never in the business on an extensive scale, selling his surplus to local buyers. He and his neighbors took no pride in pure bred cattle, handling only the stock usually found in Texas at the time, inferior grades and scrubs. Mr. Mc Croskey diligently cultivated and occupied his farm for thirty years. He went through the ups and downs of markets, much of his wheat selling for less than a dollar a bushel, some of his cotton bringing four cents a pound, though at one time cotton was only three cents a pound.

While he has never been in politics or public affairs it is safe to say there is no more highly esteemed and substantial citizen of Cooke County than Mr. Mc Croskey. He was for several years a trustee of his county school district and he and Mrs. Mc Croskey took an active part in the organizing and maintenance of the Methodist Church in their community and he served as a steward of the congregation.

It was in 1867, only a year or so after he left the army that Mr. Mc Croskey married Benanna Elliott. She was born and reared in Saline County Missouria, daughter of Benjamin and Angeline Elliot. The oldest of their children is Duff D. now a resident of Vernon Texas; Lena, wife of C. L. Miller of Cooke County; Charles, who lives at El Paso; Miss Vannie V. lives at Valley View; Walter is in Tom Green County, and Ethel the youngest is the wife of Charles Steadman of Valley View.

[The original was written in an address book. Written on the last page is a note written in Alexander Judd Doran’s handwriting. It states “I don’t know who wrote this history / must have been Vannie / Her or Lillian F. Doran.” My mother and I are assuming Vannie (Mc Croskey) wrote it rather than Lillian Francis Stroud because she was more likely to know the McCroskey family history.]

Transcribed by Stacy A. (Rosa) Chadwick from a journal in the possession of Charla (Doran) Rosa.
“Although the sea covers 70 percent of the earth, less than 5 percent of the ocean floors has been accurately mapped.” (glued inside front cover)

Hi! Not sure I can help, but please check my Blackerby family tree. I have posted Francis McCroskey's will which I transcribed back in the '80's. Am also puzzled by the Morris marriages, but my husband is descended from Nancy m. John Francis. Would love to know more about Francis and/or Lavina's parentage.

C.
To be completely honest, i dont know much about him. I know that he passed away about 5 years ago in Perryton Texas from liver failure caused by alcoholism. I did not get to know him growing up and happen to be searching for him and found that out...but now i am interested in finding extended family, hence my posts on here. If he were alive today he would be in his mid to late 50's?

You have probably received a thousand replies on this, but Gen. Sam Houston's mother was Elizabeth Paxton, who was married to the Samuel Houston who was nephew to Sam and Elizabeth (McCroskey) Houston. Bad habit of the early Houstons to have Samuel, Robert, James in every family in every generation, which makes a nightmare for those of us trying to sort them out. Rev. Samuel Rutherford Houston's book helps a lot.

I found Edward Hicks And his mom's Kathleen Ophelia "Kate" Pharis McCroskey gravesites, also Mary Hester Mccroskey (Eddie's sister). Eddie is buried at Rosevine Cemetery in Sabine County, TX and Mary and mother "Kate" are buried at Brookside Memorial Park Houston, TX. We probably will be visiting these graves soon and would like to see the McCroskey family also any pictures available of Edward, Kate, and any other relatives.
By the way: I am Andrea Payne Corona's mother and I am married to her dad, Wm. Larry Payne (son of Edward Hicks McCroskey). We live In Dallas and have searched for his relatives since the early 1960's. Finally found Edward's grave via the net tonight. If possible, if you have any pictures of Eddie, email them to Andrea or myself. My husband looks just like Eddie. We would so appreciate them. Thank you all for you continued help.

Hi
My grandfathers name was George Washington McCroskey, he married Dessie Bird. I believe his fathers name was Giles McCroskey and was married to Sarah Barnhouse. They were from Roane Co. W Va. My cousin, Marge McCroskey Wheeler has done some extensive research on both sides of the family. Please send me e-mail on some of your family history and I can try and get ours from Marge. I live in Las Vegas now, coming from Ohio last year. Our family moved from WVa in the 30s and 40s to Ohio. We have a McCroskey family cemetary in WVa.

Jana--Are you having as much trouble locating McCroskey as I have. My grt-grandfather was Patrick McCroskey. Basicaly, that's it. I do know that he died in New Mexico Territory in 1883 or 1884. He was shot and killed over a card game, and died just before my grandfather was born. My grandfather's mother was Ida (Naomi) Hensley of Virginia.

There aren't too many on the internet. Haven't found any in GenForum.

Please share McCroskey sites if you know of any.

Thanks.
