Hi Martha,
Could you give reference for the Murdoch McCranie / Ann McLean issue of John H McCranie?
Thanks
Ron McRaney

PS. The Y-DNA profile for the McCranie of Jura is R1b-CTS4466 with SNP A212 and additional ones that trace the family down to North Carolina / South Carolina / Georgia / Florida / Alabama / Mississippi.

Now we have a Y-DNA profile that can determine if you are actually a McCranie from the Isle of Jura. If interested let me know ron.mcraney at gmail.com
I don't know if you are still in business. I would very much like to connect to your site---is that where the history of the clan is or have you posted it onto ancestry.com now? I am actually from the US descended from William McCranney or MackCranney who settled in the 1600s in Springfield, Mass. Family legend (?) states that the first McCranney who came over to the US indentured himself to a ship's captain so he could learn to be a sailor. His indentureship was sold to a widow in the US where he worked it out and became a free man. We are trying to learn what his name was and more about him and our heritage over in the British Isles. if you have anything that could help me with our family's quest, I would greatly appreciate it.

In the early records here in America, we have the spellings of MackCranney, McCranney, McCraney, McCrany, and Cranney. Much was spelled as the writer perceived the phonics obviously.

Thank you,

Karen Taylor
hendusue@gmail.com
I sure hope after 9 years, you still get notifications on McCranies. I, too, am descended from Elza McCranie. He's the husband of Martha Bryan (my maternal line), and I'm stuck on HER mother, who is not Elizabeth Perkins, as most trees show. If you get this, we can talk more about McCranies. My 2x gr grandmother is Francis (Fannie) McCranie Arnold.

Guillour McCranie, of the Isle of Jura ???? Really, I doubt the documentation ????

Actually he was born around 1550, died in 1643, and laid to rest in Kilearnadail cemetery on the Isle of Jura, legend has it. There is a gravestone there as marked, assuming ole Gillour rests there.

I've been researching the McCranie family also. My great grandmother was Minnie Mae Ross. She was raised by H William McCranie's family. I was able to trace her McCranie heritage back to Guillour McCranie of the Isle of Jura, no parents names or birth/death info. I've been unable to find anything further. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Angela,
The story goes when the Campbells took charge of the Isle of Jura, they started calling the MacRaighne (the MacDonald form of the name) MacCrain. The name change from Mac Crain was due to it's Gaelic translation, "Son of Sow". Considerable immigrants to Islay and the Scotland mainland changed their name to MacNeil. However the Cape Fear, NC immigrants kept the name MacCrain. Today there are various spellings, McRaney, McCraine, McRanie, McCraney, McCranie
Hope this helps,
Ron McRaney

Hi Elizabeth, it's been a long time, glad to see you are still gathering roots. I've been taking a break did some DNA Y testing and found connections to this McCranie connection you mentioned through a lawyer in GA, we share the same DNA Y strings.

Found below information you may already have however.
Best Wishes,
Ron McRaney

Name: Daniel (Big Thumb) MCCRANIE
• Given Name: Daniel (Big Thumb)
• Surname: MCCRANIE
• Suffix: Sr.
• Sex: M
• Title: Sr.
• Note:
From: Dillard Ensley
Date: March 8, 2000 7:59:22 AM EST

Neil was the third child and second son of Daniel and Sarah; Duncan was the oldest, although almost all published genealogies have him born as late as 1805 (error, born 1792).

Daniel McCranie married (2) Catherine "Kitty" Holmes in 1844 (exact date lost due to Courthouse fire in Lowndes County). She was married (1) to Silas B. Godwin and (2) to James Paige. She had one son by first marriage and one son and one daughter by the second. All of her children migrated
to old Lowndes County when she did/or very shortly hereafter.

Daniel and Kitty, and probably Sarah, are buried in the Wilkes Cemetery in Cook County, in unmarked graves. We know Daniel's grave, and there are embryonic plans to mark the site when enough money is raised.

• Birth: 1772 in Cross Creek, Cumberland or Robeson Co, NC
• Death: 17 JUN 1854 in Lowdnes Co., GA
• Christening: 16 NOV 1850 Pleasant Church, Lownes Co., GA
• Burial: Wilkes Cem., Cook Co., GA
If you google Daniel McCranie you'll see a write up about him there. I read he was in the Cumberland militia, & even given a pention & land for his service. They then moved to Ga. Did you mean you're from Murdoch, Daniel, Daniel Jr. then Malcolm? Mine is Murdoch, Daniel, Daniel, William, Martin Shaw, John David, then my Mom.

OMGosh!!! I would love to be able to trace Laura's family tree information. I had talked to Clara many, many years ago and didn't really get much information from her. (She was a little scary to me to be honest.) lol
Here is my email address, ileana_boyd @ yahoo . com .

So, the name McArthur ... where does the family line hale from, and do you have any pictures, or other interesting information that I could ... um, siphon off of you? I have gotten in touch with one of Richard's nephew and am slowly pestering him. (Very, very slowly ... getting in touch with new people is a delicate matter. I don't want to be too pushy, but I really want to trace as much of my tree as I can.)
Thank you so much for your reply!
Jennifer
