Hi Barbara. I'm a McRae whose paternal line came from Jamaica. My great-grandfather was James Theodore McRae (African lineage) who raised his family in Santa Cruz. He lived from 1864-1949. We don't know who his parents were, but I have read that a white plantation owner named McRae had lived in Jamaica during colonial era and later brought slaves to the NC area.

What about McCrave? My 3rd great grandfather was John McCrave (born about 1811) who I believe was from Seatown, Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland. Lots of McCrave's from that area. There aren't too many McCrave's, so I have always wondered just when and where it branched off of some other variation.

Nancy McCrave
Guelph McCraes in general...Re: Bio: John McCrae 1872-1918 (In Flanders Fields)

Keith and Peter,
My name is Todd Girdwood. My mum was Jean Isabel McCrae of Guelph. Her father was Harold "Red" McCrae of Guelph. I have a family tree kicking around done by my aunt Jean (deceased), once married to my uncle Don McCrae, now of Waterloo. Not sure if Catherine would be on it, but I could take a look. I'm only on a trial Ancestry pass... Don't know if I'll renew. You can contact me at toddcyd@sympatico.ca . Colonel John McCrae is on a branch of our tree.

Peter (or anyone), I was told I have an ancestor who was a cousin to the poet John McCrae. Her name was Catherine (Kitty) and married a Thomas Morris. I think she was born in 1863, so probably a first cousin to John, but I can't seem to make the connection. John had an uncle named William, who had 4 children, none name Catherine. I don't know if John had another uncle that would have preserved the name McCrae, or maybe a great uncle that sailed from Scotland with his grandfather Thomas in 1849.

many thanks, Keith

Andrew McCrea b prob 1820-1835

My Andrew was married to Margaret Cullen (1835-1900). He was reportedly born in Ireland and emigrated to Canada, family history has it as Ontario (although his son married in Quebec). By the time wife Margaret died in Massachusetts (Boston) she was a widow. I don't know if he ever made it from Canada to the US. Margaret moved from Canada to the US in 1880. His sons: John Joseph McCrea, b. Aug 1865 Ontario. married Josephine Bridget Downey (aka Bridget). Died 1912 in Boston. Charles McCrea b. 1873 (also in Canada) d. in Boston 1908. Patrick McCrea b abt 1852, d. in Pennsylvania 1911. I see some folks in the Canadian Census info but am reluctant to add it without marriage/birth information tying them all together. As ever, any help appreciated. The Irish/Scottish side of my family is proving the most difficult to trace!

Trying to find information on a Sarah McCrae. She is listed as the mother of Janet Armstrong who was baptised in Troqueer, Kirkcudbirgght on May 22, 1814. A search of the 1841 and 1851 census's does not find her anyplace. A seach for death OPR does not find her either.

Her husband was William Armstrong. I have found two death OPR's that might be his. Both are prior to the 1841 census and both are in Kirkcudbright County.

Anything on Sarah would be great

Thanks

Bob

Janet McCrae - abt.1850 d/o Andrew McCrae and Margaret McFadyen

Janet McCrae was my 2 x great grandmother who married James Williamson in Glasgow in 1869. I can assume by census records that she was born in either 1849 or 1850 in Dumbartonshire, Scotland. I have been unable to find any record of her birth but I know from her marriage certificate that her parents were Andrew McCrae and Margaret McFadyen who were married in Maybole, Scotland in 1933. This seems to be correct because in the 1861 census Margaret is listed as born in Maybole, Ayrshire. Andrew is listed as born in Leswalt, Wigtownshire, Janet is listed as scholar (student) aged 11 born in Dumbartonshire and an older brother Hugh aged 17 born in Lanark - Glasgow. I have been unable to find any record of Hugh's birth as well. It would be wonderful to find out how many siblings Janet actually had and learn of their individual paths. Janet's parents were both listed as deceased on the 1869 marriage certificate but I haven't located any death registers for either Andrew or Margaret so I would like to find those in the hope of learning their mother's maiden names. With that information I should be able to trace the previous generation and hopefully all of their siblings too.
Any help or information greatly appreciated.
Yours sincerely,

Tim Edwards

William McCrae md Winnifred lived Ontario Wellington Haldimand

I have William McCrae and wife Winnifred in the 1851 census in Province: Canada West (Ontario), District: Kent County,
District Number: 17, Sub-District: Chatham. They have children Jane, Winifred (Elizabeth), Sarah and C Vanella. Elizabeth Winnifred married Henry Lawe 1865 in Ontario. From Ontario birth and census records I follow the Lawe family through the records. Sarah McCrae married William Richard Stevens. All the Ontario records for the McCrae's give little info to trace the ancestors. The marriage and death records of the children have them moving to Wellington and Haldimand. Can anyone help with this family?

I am the great Grand son of Hector McCrae who was born in Wellington County, Guelph, Ontario. abt 1831-33 he lived most of his life in Oxford County, Ontario near Woodstock and Tillsonburg. He died in 1907. I know about the Woodlawn Cem. but have not checked it in detail.

I have resent new information stating that Hector's parent came from Scotland. Also, that there was at least one brother or sister that lived near Gravenhurst, ON and then Barrie around the 1870-80 period.

Do you have any group of records about McCraes leaving for Canada that were born, about 1790-1815?

Thanks.
New Zealand McCraes

Hi, I've started researching my husbands family and have managed - thanks to you all in the most part - to find the link between New Zealand and Scotland....it comes via Canada in the form of David McCrae - still a favoured family name used throughout the generations in NZ (as is John).

In my recent working life however I came across another set of McCraes based in Dunedin, New Zealand and have yet to find a link. My 'McCraes' have always had a catch phrase "if you come across a McCrae and the name is spelt the same then their family" and the Dunedin McCraes hold the same phrase to be true, so somewhere there must be a link of some kind. Can anyone out there suggest how I could proceed from here? I've searched through the passenger lists for other McCraes that may have settled in Dunedin....makes it harder that I'm no longer living in NZ though.

Our present day record shows the McCrae line that runs from Allan McCrae c1675 in Ayr, Ayrshire, to the present day.
Robert McCrae 1724 Ayr
John McCrae 1751, Cumnock
Andrew McCrae 1789 Cumnock
William McCrae snr 1813 Sorn, Ayrshire
William McCrae jnr 1854 Fulham, London
Archibald McCrae 1892 Leyton, London
and myself.
There are lots of other McCrae lines that run at the same time.

Now go back to Andrew McCrae 1789, his eldest brother was called Marmaduke McCrae 1776, he had two sons who emigrated to Canada in about 1850.

It is their line in Canada where John McCrae the poet came from.

John McCrae was Dr Lt Colonel John McCrae of Gelph Canada.
He was born Gelph 1872 and Died in France 28/1/1918 and is buried in the British Commonwaelth Grave at Wimereux, France.

This is a very compact version of out family tree but I may be able to help if you have any other queries.

Peter McCrae,

More McCrae surname spelling variations

The McCrae surname and its variations

I have been studying the McCrae variations and without getting sidetracked on to "K's and Y's" and others the variations work out as follows.

MAC
rae, rea, ree, rie, ra, re.

MACC
rae, rea, ree, rie, ra, re.

MC
rae, rea, ree, rie, ra, re.

MCC
rae, rea, ree, rie, ra, re.

As you can see there are four main prefixes and six variations to each group. This gives a total of twenty four different ways of spelling McCrae.

A good many of the McCrae's (and all variations) came in the 1600's from Ireland through the Solway ports and moved up through Scotland from the south to-wards Ayrshire and other Scottish counties.
With the Gaelic root of RA or RATH we find MACRATH. In Lowland Scotland we find the prefix CC and MCCRAE the Gaelic root was lost.
So on average the Highlanders used MACCRAE, for Ayrshire and the lowlands etc the MCCRAE was in use. The American version came as MCCREA and as usual there was an exception to every rule.

Peter McCrae
We see he had a brother Andrew, Can you tell me if any other children apart from the two sons you have mentioned.
or even inherited any other children from his previous marriages. As Jane Stevenson was living with Marmaduke and his third wife Helen Carson along with Jane's 1 year old daughter (also Jane).
Thanks

We think that there is a connection to Mccluskie of Galloway.

Thomas McCluskie (born 1867 died 1941)of "Grangely" Lockerbie was the head master of Corrie Public School near lockerbie for 32 years and retired in May 1924. We know he had 3 sister, Jean, Sarah, Maggie and a brother John.
We have been told that he is the link to the McCrae's

Thomas was our Gr Uncle.

Once again thanks for the help.
