John ‘Jack’ McCRAE, Lt. Col., MD, BA, FRCP (Eng), FRDS (Eng), CAMC, second child of David and Janet McCrae,
GGGr children of Marmaduke McCrae of Ayrshire Scotland, was born on 30 November 1872 at 108 Water Street, Guelph.
He taught at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph (then a part of University of Toronto), graduated in 1898 from U of T medical school with a gold medal and fought in the Boer War.
He was in the Canadian Militia Artillery from 1889 to 1904 and “D” Battery, R.C.A., in 1900<20>. He was living at home with the family at 211 Paisley Street, Guelph, when he enlisted on 22 September 1914 at Valcartier, P.Q., to serve as a Major in the 1st Artillery Brigade in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in World War I.
He was a poet, whose published works include "In Flanders Fields", and also co-authored with J. G. ADAMI a medical text book.
He died of pneumonia at 01:30 hours on 28 January 1918 at No. 14 British General Hospital for Officers and was buried on 30 January 1918 at Wimereux, in the Commonwealth War Grave, near Boulogne, France, on the English Channel.
