I do cemetery restoration and am doing a project with my 8th grade students. They are hopelessly stuck on finding more information about a George M. McCracken buried in Spring Friends Cemetery in Hendricks County, IN. Born 8-13-1841, died 12-28-1863. His parents were Thomas and Jane (Mendenhall) McCracken, who died before he came to Indiana. We are pretty sure that he came from Guilford or Stokes county NC to Indiana shortly before his death. He is mentioned in the Mill Creek Monthly minutes, so was associated with the Friends.
We'd like to know more about him to put an identity to a stone.

Robert McCracken (b 6-25-1763, d 9-9-1831) & Martha Vestal (b 2-15-1770, d 6-20-1842), who were married 11-21-1792 at/near Cane Creek MM, NC.

Robert McCracken was the son of Alexander & Abigail McCracken of Orange Co NC.

Martha Vestal was the dau of David Vestal & Sarah Chamness.

David Vestal was the son of William & Elizabeth Vestal.
Sarah Chamness was the dau of Anthony & Sarah Chamness.

Jane Mendenhall was the dau of Nathan Mendenhall & Phebe Haworth.

Nathan Mendenhall (b 12-9-1776, d 10-17-1841) was son of George (d 1805) & Judith (d 1831) Mendenhall.
Phebe Haworth (b 3-22-1778, d 12-29-1851) was dau of Stephanus (d 4-18-1804, age 63) & Elizabeth Haworth.

Check to see if he served in the Civil War. I was noticing the date of his death. I know he was associated with the Friends - but he may have served in a non-combat capacity and may have died as a result of the war.
While checking on my own George McCracken's Civil War records - I found reference to other "George's".

Yes, I was wondering that too. There are 4 Civil War solidiers in this Friend's cemetery--they all ran off in the middle of the night to join. I am reading through the list in the 1885 History of Hendricks county because the others are in there...do you know of a less tedious way of finding that?
