Hi, we are looking for information on the ancestors of Keturah McCracken who was probably from Northwest New Jersey. She married James Stout Norris on 12 Dec 1839 in Morris Co NJ. She is my wife's gg-grandmother. Please note this is a different Keturah McCracken than the one born in PA in 1860.

James Stout Norris was born in 1812. the second child of Martin Luther Norris, in Chester Township, Morris Co NJ. I am guessing Keturah McCracken was probably born about 1820 and may have died about 1845-1855 since James Stout Norris married for a second time.

It is likely she was the granddaughter or great-granddaughter of James McCracken who (I have noted on this board) died 1 Apr 1822 in Oxford, Warren Co,
Does anyone following the McCracken's have any information on this family that would indicate where Keturah fits?

Mike

Mike,
My gg grandmother, Keturah McCracken was born 12-21-1815, married Reverend Joseph Morris 12-12-1839, and died 10-01-1858 according to my family records.
My Morris' are from Pennsylvania and I presume Joseph and Keturah lived in or near Lycoming County, PA. as did their descendents.
I don't have any information on my Keturah other than the dates provided.
I'm only speculating, but I wouldn't think there would be too many Keturah McCracken's during this time period. I've not run across the name "Keturah" before.
Our Keturah's may or may not be the same person.

Scott,

Thanks for the reply. There is some information floating around the internet that I believe is in error indicating that Keturah McCracken married J. S. Norris. I think this started with a McCracken researcher that had a typo in an article indicating she married J. Norris rather than J. Morris. It was then picked up by a Norris researcher who decided it was Joseph Stout Norris. Although it is very hard to prove a negative, I found enough information on Keturah including some pages from the McCracken Family bible to convince me the family moved from near Oxford NJ to PA before she would have been of marrying age and that she married Joseph Morris as you indicate. By the way there was an unrelated and younger Keturah McCracken around in PA at that time. Thanks again for the reply.

Mike
