Parents of George McCowen - Darke Co., Ohio

I am looking for the parents of George McCowen.

According to his tombstone and census records, he was born on 14 Mar 1817 in Warren Co., Ohio and died on 8 Jan 1892 in Darke Co., Ohio. He is buried in Ithaca Cemetery. No death record or obituary can be found that shows his parents.

George married twice.

1st to Rhoda Elizabeth Pickering (1827 - 1854) on 18 June 1846 in Darke Co.

2nd to Esther B. Pickering (1837 - 1930) on 30 June 1855 in Darke Co.

In the 1880 census, George McCowen's father's birthplace was listed as Ireland while his mother's was left blank.

There are also other McCowens buried in Ithaca that might very well be relatives.

The only other McCowens in Ithaca Cemetery are those of the family of John McCowen of Ireland/New Jersey (1786-1850) and Mary Briney, who were married on 2 Nov 1820 in Warren Co. They stayed in Warren Co. until about 1826. A biographical sketch on one of their children list that they had five children. "Their children are five in number: George, James, Thomas, Jackson, and Catherine."

I researched them, and found them as:

James McCowen (1822 in Warren - 1902) who m. Huldah Nealeigh
Catharine McCowen (1824 in Warren - 1910) who m. John Cloyd and Reuben Leslie
Thomas McCowen (1826 in Darke - 1907) who m. Sarah Jane Mears
John Jackson McCowen (1831 in Darke - 1914) who m. Maria Louisa Miller

The children's obituaries don't list him because they only listed the living and both Georges (mine and the one listed) apparently died before all of them. Also, an estate/probate cannot be found for John McCowen to see if George was ever listed.

The only George McCowen that closely ties within this family is mine. However, the McCowen/Briney marriage was in 1820--3 years after George was born. All of George's records list his birth year around 1817.

So, what exactly is George to them? Or is my George even related to them?

He and my grandmother divorced when my mother was very young and she never kept in touch with him much.

I'm thinking perhaps he may have been a great uncle or something of yours, since my McCowen was from Ohio. Some of my relatives are from Drake County too.

I am trying to tie Elinder (Ellender) MCCOWEN Beard born about 1801 to 1802 to one of the three McCowen families living in Morgan county GA. I believe she is somehow related to the Butler family from Pennsylvania because she named her son Benjamin Bulter Beard. I believe she is the daughter of Duncan McCowen but I don't have concrete proof.

I would great appreciate any help determining who her parents were and how they tie back to Noble Butler and Rachel JONES Butler. I believe it is through Bersheba BUTLER McCowen and John McCowen.

Please e-mail me personally at lion23@aol.com so we can keep your responses private.
Please tell me why you think Cheri may be your mother? We talked To Cheri this morning and although she has children, she never gave any children up for adoption. But, please remember that both Cheri and her sister Terri were also given up for adoption by their mother. Tell me everything you do know about your birth mother, no matter how small you may think the information is. Perhaps there is another link to this same family. What is your birthdate? Where were you born? Have you ever heard names of your birth grandparents? Do you know how old your birth mother was at the time of your birth? Send me an e-mail to my personal e-mail address I provided you with.

James and Frances Ann Holdham McCowen

I am looking for descendants of James McCowen (born KY @ 1815) and his second wife, Frances Ann Holdham, who married James McCowen in Ray County, MO in early 1850. They had at least four children (Emilie, Margaret/Maggie, Katherine/Kate and Joseph/Joe) who were alive in 1871. James McCowen apparently died between 1860 and 1870, probably in Clay County, MO (but possibly Ray County, MO). Frances Ann Holdham McCowen had several McCowen step-children to whom she appears to have been close; and from at least 1867 to 1872 she rented and ran the Planters Hotel in Richmond, Ray County, MO. We have not been able to find her after that, although we did find one of her daughters on a later census.

Re: Sherrod Bradshaw McCowen

Jason,Your Sherrod may be the brother to my great-grandfather Jacob O. Bradshaw, if so, Young E. Bradshaw and Nancy Tripp would be his parents. My "well cooked" but limited research of this branch of the Bradshaw's as showing up in Randolph County area of Southern Illinois, this before statehood in about 1807. I don't know where they migrated from. It was a large family with John as head of household and they had slaves from Kentucky. So maybe the Bradshaws were from Kentucky. Bradshaw men show up in the area militia. Area historys say John had a plantation at the headwaters of the Cache River, it was the polling place for the area, he was Justice of the Peace and married Francis McKowen and Frankey Roberson.(Check out Union County Illinois.) He signed as esquire. They all left there and were in Miller County Ark., then Jefferson Co. About 1836 Young E. disappears and Nancy is back in Illinois by 1840 with Sherrod and Jacob O. This Sherrod married Catherine Hileman, Union County in 1847 and died about 1850-52. The names of Jacob and Sherrod first show up in the Bradshaw llineage with Jacob Lane and Sherrod Lane Bradshaw. I haven't figured that one out either. Hope this helps. Maybe we should share research and something will rise to the top, so to speak. Sherrod shows up with several spellings , Sherad, Sherod Sherrod, Sharrad, It's hard to know if they are one and the same. My nemisis is Young E. with a name like that he would be easy to trace but I think he died about 1836. I am researching the Alamo and related battles at this time.
I am helping a friend to locate her missing 1/2 sisters. Looking for Terri Todd and Cheri Todd both born between 1957 and 1959 in Sidney, Ohio, at Sidney Hospital. Terri and Cheri were later adopted by Sidney's parents, (would be Terri and Cheri grandparents) George and Gladys McCowen. Thought to have moved to Florida. Their 1/2 sister Michelle in Illinois is looking for them! Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

I'm looking for any information on my Grandfather Fredric Horton McCowen, born in Whitsett, TX, Jun 21, 1883 and died in California in Feb. 1969. His twin was Edward, and they had two other brothers, Marshall and Banner. I believe Banner lived and died in Columbia Co., Florida. He was born, I presume, in Texas in May of 1886 and died in Florida in the 70's. I am especially curious to find out who their parents were, and as far back as I can go. I know nothing about this side of my family. Shannon McCowen Green; email : mxshannon@hotmail.com
