Looking for any information on Thomas McCloy. As of right now I have found his birthdate as June 11, 1915, cottonmount Mallusk Co. antrim which is now known as Newtownabbey, a suburb of Belfast In Northern Ireland. He served in ww2 as a junior engineer in the engine room as a part of the royal merchant marine. I've found his ID card thanks to another great site but am having trouble locating where he went after. Rumblings was he immigrated to Canada to family members?

Found records of both marriages of Dr. Alexander McCloy (s/0 Dr. Neal McCoy & Jane Dickson):

1. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~paslchs/newsabstracts.html
Newspaper Abstracts:
Lancaster Journal June 21 1816
On Tuesday last by Rev Joseph CLARKSON, Dr Alexander McCLOY to Mrs Mary KRYDER both of Soudersburg
2. From PA-Roots site:
Married on Thursday of last week by Rev. Joseph Clarkson, Dr. Alexander McCloy, of Soudersburg, to Miss Mary, daughter of John Henderson, of Leacock Twp.
(Source: Lancaster Intelligencer and Weekly Advertiser, Saturday, Feb. 3, 1821.)

It appears that his first wife, Mrs. Mary Kryder, was most likely a widow. I would like to discover who her first husband was and what her maiden name is. Also, wonder where she is buried - possibly eastern Lancaster County?
Re: McCloy, George & other McCloys - Ahoghill Craigs Antrim

I'm continuing to do research on this family and need to get to the Portglenone, Cullybackey, Craigs area to really delve further into it. Based on marriage records in Scotland, I am able to tie them back to this area as most of them got married in one of the two Presbyterian churches in Portglenone. The Ulster Covenant also provides some clues as well. I haven't come across the name Honorah though. I will go back to my tree and see what I can confirm and what I can guess at - there is some guessing involved. I can tell you that my grandfather James McCloy was 1910 - 1966 all in Greenock, Scotland. His father, also James McCloy was 1883-1939 both birth and death in Greenock as well. His father is Hugh McCloy who was born in Northern Ireland and died in Greenock Scotland (Abt. 1856 - 1911). I show Hugh's marriage certificate as him having a father George McCloy and mother Margaret Campbell. George was 1822-1893 in Craigs, Ireland. What I don't have confirmation of is George's father who i think was also George. Let me know if this helps. I can get you names of siblings if that helps. Wayne

I would like to confirm with you what you know . Are you still researching it ? I am to Wales next week to share with my father Robert McCloy , great / grandson of James and Honorah , I would be so grateful to hear from you as soon as possible .

Thanks for replying to my post. My husband's Grandfather was John, son of Norah and James. He was born in 1885 and my husband said that he had heard him speak of Bridget, whom he called Bridgy. What is your fathers name?
I agree that these families should connect, but I've been unable to find the connection! Here is an overview of what I have:

Neal McCloy married Jane Dickson in Ireland. They arrived in the US sometime after 1791.
Their children: (That I know of)
Alexander b. 1791 Ireland
Nancy (Ann) b. 1800 Lancaster County, PA
Mary married b. 1792-1799; Robert Spencer. She died in 1817.

According to Ellis & Evans "History of Lancaster County, PA, " Neal had two sons, but only Alexander is named.

Neal McCloy was a physician in Lancaster County. He, his wife and two sons relocated to Washington County, PA 1832-1833. Jane Dickson McCloy died in 1833, Neal in 1845. Both are buried at Miller's Run Presbyterian Cemetery (findagrave.com #77016938 & #77016893 )

Nancy (Ann) McCloy (1800-1860) married William Black (b. abt. 1781 Ireland - 1854) on Jun 15, 1819 at Soudersburg, Lancaster County, PA. Both are buried at the Strasburg Cemetery.
Their children:
Robert, died young
Adam, died young
William (my line)
Jane Dickson married Christian Rowe
Anne, unmarried
Adam Ross
Mary McCloy married Robert Spencer
Thomas Alexander
John Neal, died young

I do not know when my William Black arrived in the US or if he traveled with any family members.

Can you give me any wives names and time frames you are trying to work in so I can narrow down my index names?
Not that William Black "William Black (6) served an apprenticeship while in Ireland, at the weaver's trade, learning the method of manufacturing fine Irish linen."

That is likely the connection with the McCloys. Ann McCollough McCloy, my ggggrandmother was the daughter of James and Nancy McCollough who were linen manufacturers in Ireland. In fact there is still a McCollough linen company there today. And many of the McCloy women in my family have been seamstresses. I can well remember my grandmother sewing clothes for cousins and her quilts were worthy of most Amish tourist traps.

I'm 3rd cousin of Lucyann. We share James Madison McCloy, son of James William and Rhoda McCloy who settled in the Perry County, OH area about 1830 via Uniontown, PA where he was a teamster. James William was the son of John McCloy and Ann McCollough of County Down, Ireland, Ann having emigrated to the 13 colonies around 1795 with her brood.

See this FindAGrave memorial for Jane McCloy Black who must be related to your Blacks. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=49...

I'll post the meat of Jane's memorial here but you should reference her husband's memorial and the links which are pretty much up to date. And also check the memorials for the McCloys in PA as I've been updating them for months. Most are now linked. They are all related to each other.

Jane McCloy Black
Wife of William Black, Jr

"Born near Ballymoney, Ireland, in May of 1788; married Jane McCloy, about 1820. Jane McCloy was the only child of John and Jennie (Curry) McCloy, of Ballymoney, County Antrim, Ireland. She was born in 1790, died March 9th, 1871. Her husband died July 27, 1866."

"They decided to come to America to join William Black Jr's parents and family, who had come in 1790. At the time of their sailing, William Black Jr. was a baby two years of age, and so ill that the doctor said there was no chance of his recovery. His mother, feeling that she could not bear to see her baby buried at sea, left him with her maiden sisters, Jennie and Nancy Wiley, in Ireland. He recovered, and brought his Aunt Nancy Wiley with his family when they came to America. They sailed from Port Rush near the Giant's Causeway, on the north coast of Ireland, on Orange Day, July 12, 1836, arriving at Liverpool the next morning. They came to America on "The Dunkin Gibb" a sailing vessel which was delayed six weeks at Liverpool, waiting for passengers enough to make a paying trip to America. They were on the water ninety days, and when they reached the mouth of the St. Lawrence river, navigation was closed for the winter. They traveled by wagons to Buffalow, New York, passing around Niagara Falls near the location of Brock's monument. The trip was too much for Nancy Wiley, the aunt, and she passed away and was buried at Prescott, Canada."

"The Black family spent the winter in Buffalo, and when Spring came, the resumed their journey by way of canal, to Lancaster, Ohio."

"A Mr. Stemen, who lived near where the Fairview schoolhouse now stands, east of Bremen, brought them in his wagon from Lancaster, to the home of William Black (1), east of Bremen."

"William and Jane (McCloy) Black spent their remaining days on this farm, which William Black (1) bought when he came from Pennsylvania in 1811."

"William Black (6) served an apprenticeship while in Ireland, at the weaver's trade, learning the method of manufacturing fine Irish linen. In the United States he followed the occupation of farming. He died July 27, 1866. During the last year of his life, the Bible, the Presbyterian Hymnal, and the "Presbytyr" were his constant companions. His wife died March 9, 1871. They were members of the Bethel Presbyterian Church (sometimes called "Old Bethel"). Both are buried in the cemetery of this church."

CHILDREN:
Robert John Black
Mary Wiley Black
James Wiley Black
Samuel Curry Black

I wish to make a slight correction to my McCloy history entry with new data I've just discovered.

"G4. Catherine (Cassandra) McCloy b. 1843"

Catherine (Cassandra) McCloy's real name, at least according to her grave marker where it is cast in stone LOL was Casander, spelled with only a single S.
So it is Casander Knight McCloy 1766 - 30 Sep 1842,
daughter of William 1721 - 1791 and Sarah Knight 1726 - unknown,
and wife of James Plummer 1760 - 1840.
She is buried in the Bundy-Paine Cemetery, Jackson County, OH.

And I would be thrilled if anyone can give me a clue about the Kinght/Plummer connection with that cemetery.

It's been a few years and I've lost your email but someone posted about Minnie Mae McCloy from Perry County, Ohio who was married to, I believe you said, John Wesley Losey. Anyway the last name was Losey, not sure about first and middle.

I stumbled upon about a half dozen Losey graves all in a single cemetery in Perry County, Ohio. Contact me if you are still looking.

Kelly wrote: "Harry Sr. is my grandfather. I am Harry Jr.'s youngest daughter."

I'm assuming you mean the Harry, Sr. b. 09 Oct 1907 d. 09 Aug 1998 of Perry Co, Ohio. This post is also in reply to Sean Block and Tim Essex. As to the Canonsburg, PA McCloys we are related and we are not. It depends on which "wave" of Scots/Irish McCloys you are talking about. Though if you go back far enough in Ireland/Scotland they'd still be related but more remotely.

G1. John McCloy and Ann McCollough.
Basically, about all, I'd say 90% of the McCloys in S.E. Ohio to include Perry, Hocking, Athens, Muskingum, Fairfield and as far as Tucarawas and Holmes counties are very closely related. They are descended from the Ann McCloy (maiden name McCollough), wife of John McCloy. Supposedly Ann arrived on these shores at one of the Virginia ports or possibly Baltimore or Philadelphia around 1795 with her 4 or 5, possibly more children. These are thought to be James b. 1786, Mary b. 1792, Alexander and David. There were also a Nancy b. 1780, a John b. 1785 and a Thomas b. 1783. However, I have as yet insufficient evidence that they are siblings of the other 4 but also I cannot prove that they are not.

Ann McCollough McCloy was supposedly a widow when she arrived here and settled in the Middleway (various names over time) area of Virginia. What happened to her and when she died or where is not known. It is also not known what happened to David McCloy. But as for the others:

G2. Mary McCloy at the age of 13 married Captain Thomas Endsley who ran the Endsley House on the old national road. They had 8 children. Due to the location of the Endsley Inn and the fact that the national road was the only road at the time many presidents traveled over it and the Endsleys hob knobbed with them. One of Mary McCloy Endsley's daughters married into the McKinley family and thus we are indirectly related to President William McKinley. One, Mabel McCloy McKinley, was the president's favorite niece and she was also a famous singer at the turn of the century. She may also have gotten married in the White House. Look it up. You'll be surprised.

I already stated that David's whereabouts were unknown. There was a Thomas McCloy who became a doctor in the Coshocton Ohio area and it is likely this Thomas. The remaining 2 known brothers James William and Alexander migrated westward to Ohio. Alexander's occupation is unknown, however James was a wagon master and harness maker. After he finsihed with wagons, stage coaches, etc. he settled in the New Lexington area around 1830 and opened a harness and saddle shop there. He married a woman named Rhoda, last name unknown. Rhoda is buried in the old Methodist Church cemetery near the court house in New Lexington. She died around 1860.

G2. William McCloy and Ruth Worley had the following children:
G3. Rhoda Ann McCloy b. 1839, m. Jeremiah Prather 1862
G3. David W. McCloy b. 1840, d. 1894
G3. William A. McCloy b. 1842, m. Martha McNeal 1869, d. 1876
G3. Mary Jane McCloy b. 1845, d. 1913
G3. Angeline M. McCloy b. 1846
G3. Samuel F. McCloy b. 1848, d. 1958 (yep 110 years old)

From this point I'm continuing with only my line, and that of Kelly's. Most of the others I know but some details are missing.

G2. James William McCloy and Rhoda had the following children:
G3. William A. b. 1812 Virginia, m. Ruth Worley 1836 Perry Co, OH
G3. James Madison b. 1814 Virginia, m.(1) 1837 Eliza Plummer; m (2) 1870 after Eliza's death, Rosannah Kepler
G3. Mary C. b. 1817 Virginia, marriage unknown, still living with James as late as 1850
G3. Eli b. 1818 Virginia, m. Catherine (Kate) Parks 1840 Coschocton, OH

James Madison helped his father run the harness shop in New Lexington and he went by the name Madison to eliminate confusion since his father's name was also James.

G3 James Madison McCloy and Eliza Plummer had the following children:
G4. James William McCloy, Sr. b. 1838, d. 1924 m. 1867 Lydia Patton b.1838, d. 1913
G4. Susan W. McCloy b. 1840, d.1917, m. 1858 Cyril Hickman
G4. David E. McCloy b. 1842, m. 1882 Minerva Clapper
G4. Catherine (Cassandra) McCloy b. 1843
G4. Eli F McCloy b. 1848, d. 1930, m. 1871 Elizabeth Connor

Continuing on with Kelly's and my line:
G4. James William McCloy, Sr. and Lydia Patton's children were:
G5. Ulyssess Grant McCloy b. 1867, m. 1890 Isabell Oliver
Note: Either Ulysses Grant or his son Ulysses Grant, Jr. migrated back to Pennsylvania and to this day his descendents live there; I've been in contact with them. And that is where this chain of McCloys connects with McCloys in PA.
G5. Cora McCloy b. 1869 d. 1910, m. 1896 Solomon Norris.
G5. Robert S. McCloy b. 1871, d. 1950, m. Rachel Baker.
G5. James William McCloy, Jr. b. 1873, d. 1952 m.(1) 1904 Sophia Spurgeon - no children. m.(2) 1907 Estella Demet Shipley b. 1883, d. 1973.
G5. Anna McCloy b. 1876, d. 1934, never married.
G5. Charles Edgar McCloy b. 1878, d. 1946, m. 1909 Nellie Shilling.
G5. Lillian McCloy b. 1880, d. ca 1960, m. 1907 John Catchpole.
G5. Herbert Arthur McCloy b. 1881 d. 1917, m. unknown.
G5. Lulu May McCloy b. 1886, d. 1934, m. Mack Vessels.

About this time the McCloys got into things other than harness and saddle making, such as mining and brick making which powered the Perry Co economy from the 1870s through the 1920s.

G5. James William McCloy, Jr. and Estella Shipley's children:
G6. Harry McCloy, Sr. b 1907, d. 1998, m. 1940 Imogene Valentine
G6. Stella McCloy b. 1910, d. 1910. SIDS
G6. Robert Russel McCloy b. 1912, d. 1992, m.(1) Sevilla Stickdorn, children unknown; m. (2) Verna Bishop b. 1916, d. 2005
G6. James Amon McCloy b. 1913, d. 1997, m. (1) Isabelle Nutter; m.(2) Bonnie Jane Anderson b. 1919, d. 1972.
G6. James William McCloy b. 1915, d. 1916.
G6. Thomas Edgar McCloy b. 1916 d. 1976, m. (1) Norma Chevalier; m.(2) Dorothy Vickroy
G6. Emma Ruth McCloy b. 1918, d. 1975, m. (1) Dick Green; m. (2) unknown; m. (3) Charles Clinton b. 1919, d. 1980.
G6. Addie Mae McCloy b. 1921 Living, m. (1) Charles Zartman; m.(2) Francis Miller b. 1902, d. 1976; m. (3) Charles Pease b. 1907, d. 1973.
Note: There are 2 James McCloys above but the second one is James William. In the McCloy line there has always been a James William going back hundreds of years.

Children of Harry McCloy, Sr. and Imogene Valentine:
G7. Female, living
G7. Male, living

There are at least 2, perhaps 3 generations of McCloys beyond generation 7, most are still in Perry County but some have found greener pastures in Indiana and Illinois and even as far as New Mexico.

Finally, note that the last member of generation 6, Addie Mae McCloy is still living and will celebrate a 90th birthday, God willing, 01 June 2011. The grapevine says that there is going to be a McCloy reunion of sorts for her at the Columbus area nursing home where she resides on the last Sunday of May. If you are interested please contact me. Though she does not hear well and her eyes are failing, her mind is extremely sharp and she remembers things that are well, history. She is the last one left of the pre baby boomers, indeed she predates the Great Depression.
My McCloy line was in Cannonsburg. Neal McCloy, originally from Ireland, moved from Lancaster County, PA to Washington County about 1833 with his wife, Jane Dickson. Their only son, Alexander, settled there before 1840. Some of his heirs stayed in the area, others moved on to Ohio. Both Neal and son, Alexander, were physicians. My direct line in through Neal & Jane's daughter, Nancy (Ann) who married William Black in Lancaster County and whose descendants stayed in that area for several generations.

I thought i had responded to this, many appologies. The McCloys in my tree are all protestant. I've managed to find most of them signing the Ulster Covenant as well. I'm stuck on the McCloys in Antrim - get as far as George McCloy (my third GG) b. abt 1822 and can't quite connect them all from there but I keep coming back! Most of them went to Renfreshire but I know some stayed in Antrim. Wayne

My George was married in Craigs in 1841 to Margaret Campbell and died in 1893. I need to pull the paper file to be sure but i show his residence in 1887 as Greenock (84 Drumfrochar Road). The George i have had brothers James, Robert, William and John but I am not 100% certain that this is the case. I really need to get to Northern Ireland and do a lot of sleuthing. I did write to PRONI and got a will I believe, its in the paper files. This whole side has been a mystery and an elderly aunt just passed away two years ago who remembers as a child visiting the McCloys in Northern Ireland so I know some stayed there and at least my side went to Scotland. I'm going to pull up on my other computer the tree when i can to double check this and search on the names you mentioned to see if i can get any further clues, the name Peggy rings a bell for sure but not sure where or how. More soon. Cheers. Wayne

I have been researching my family tree and looking in the McCloys. My grandfather was a John Robert McCloy Donaldson from Limavady in Northern Ireland and I have recently been over and met with Robert McCloy and some other family members. We are trying to connect the McCloys of Co. Derry to the McCloys in Co. Antrim and a Samuel McCloy who we beleive to have been born in Co.Down. I was wondering if you knew of any connection?

Regards

Julie

Thanks for getting back to me. I am trying to connect the McCloys of Arran, Scotland and Ballykelly, Ireland to the McCloys of Antrim and Co. Down. I have knowledge of a John McCloy who married a Mary Brady and had 2 children in Ireland, Samuel Moffett McCloy and Sarah McCloy and they then emigrated to the States where they had another son called John. We have been trying to connect the family to Samuel McCloy but I seem to have hit a brick wall. If you could help in any way that would be great.

Regards

Julie

I have researched McCloys for five years and am now stuck!
My McCloys might have originated in Scotland or Carlisle. James McCloy was my husband's G/Grandfather married to Ann Norah Sweeney in Bandon, Cork, Ireland in 1868. They ran away to Blaina in Southwales, with their two children patrick age 2 and eugene aged 3. He had absconded from the Army and changed his name to McCann. If there is anyone who can link this branch of the family with their's I would be very grateful.
Hi Mike, yep, has been a long time, but, so nice to hear further information about my Grandpa Kubiak and possible family here, there, or, who knows where. Mike, I printed out my old post together with your response. It is almost 7 p.m. here now so will wait until tomorrow, go through all those pictures and I do mean ALL and see if I can a least scan the picture I wrote of and send it to you. Thanks Mike, and I do remember the name "Martin Kubiac" being spoken ages ago when I was a kid. My Grandpa, Joseph Kubiak/Kubiac also had a brother named "Mike", know anything about that??? I also have an old old pic of a baseball team, one or more of the guys are Kubiacs/Kubiaks.
Will keep that in mind while searching out pic with Ellen. You, or someone, may recognize someone pictured. Bye for now, Susan
Re: McCloys in Colorado

John Thomas McCloy was born in 1800 in Ireland.
He married Mary Brady born in 1799.
They had at least three children.
1.Samuel M. McCloy born 1823- died 1913
2.Sarah Ann McCloy born 1831 Ireland died in Denver in 1901
Sarah married James McAfee. I was at the Denver Public Library today and Sarah died on Nov 12, 1901. Her body was shipped to Evans,Colorado for burial, but it’s not buried there or her stone was destroyed. I went there to look. Some stones were destroyed by vandalism at one point.
Sarah and James McAfee adopted Will McAfee and Nannie Jane Mcafee and they are all listed on the 1880 census in Greeley, Colorado. Will was my grandfather. Along with them is listed Mary McCloy, Sarah’s mother.
3.John Thomas McCloy born 1837 and died Oct 6, 1905.
John is buried at Fairmont Cemetery in Denver, Colorado along with Gawn McCloy his son who died in 1906. John Thomas 1837 married Eleanor Wilson “Nellie” Carson born in Ireland in 1849.
Here are their children:
Lilla W. McCloy born in Colorado 1874
John A. McCloy born in Colorado 1876
Emma E. McCloy born in Colorado 1879
Sarah Mabel McCloy born in Evans, Colorado in 1883 died in 8 Feb 1964 Sarah Mabel is buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Denver.
Gawn McCloy born in Colorado 1885 (not sure what city) died in 1906.
Inez B. McCloy born in Colorado in 1885
Evidently, Gawn and Inez were twins. Nothing mentioned about this so far.
I was researching the McCloy family because their Sarah married my James McAfee. I can’t find out anything about James McAfee, so if you know something, Please share that with me. My family tree is McAfee Tree and it’s at familynow67.
I hope this helps,
Rita McAfee Conley

Hi I believe that there may be a connection between the McCloys in Uniontown PA and my McCloy line. My gg grandfather was James Madison McCloy and he was born in Smithfield Virginia now Middleway WVA. His grandmother was Ann McCloy and possibly one of her sons moved from Smithfield to Uniontown. Her daughter Mary McCloy married an Endsley.

Ellen McCloy was born in Ecorse, Michigan on July 10th 1901. Her parents were John & Mary McCloy. Ecorse is twelve miles south of Detroit. John died in a train accident about a year after Ellen's birth. Mary married again to a Martin Kubiac. The boy in the photo you speak of must therefore be Ellen's older step-brother. As an adult Ellen married in 1928. She gave birth to one child. The child lived only a few months. Ellen died in 1967. I am descendant of Ellen's grandfathers brother. I have further info on Ellen's father's side should you be further interested. It's been three years since you post so I hope this info is still of interest. Sincerely, Mike McCloy
