McCloskey - McClosky originally Miecznikowski in Monson, MA, Norwich, CT and FL

I am looking for relatives, past and present for my McCloskey family. This is what I have:

-My Great-Great Aunt Viola Bednarski was married to Leo Miecznikowski (Miecznikoski). They arrived from Russia/Poland in 1901.
-They had four children, Burnes?, Lena, Francis (Frank) and Bronistan? and lived in Monson, MA from arrival until about 1923.
-The 1910 census shows the last name Miecznikowski
- By the 1920 census, the last name was listed McCluskey
-Leo and Viola moved to Norwich, CT in 1923 and were listed as McCloskey with their address

- Leo (Leonard) was born abt 1880 in Rus/Pol and died in Norwich, CT on Aug 16 1967
-Viola was born Jul 4 1880 in Rus/Pol and died in Winter Park, FL on Jan 12 1979
- I have no info on Burnes other than the 1910 census - born abt 1903 in MA
- I have no info on Lena other than the 1910 census - born abt 1905 in NJ
- Frank was born Apr 19, 1907 in Monson, MA. He was the GM of Ringling Bro. Circus in the late 50's and was part owner of the Clyde Beatty Cole Bro. Circus until his death Nov 8 1979 in Winter Park, FL HIs last name has been seen as McCloskey and McClosky
- I have no info on Bronistan other than the 1910 census - born abt 1909 in MA

Any info on the people I have mentioned above would be very helpful! I can't find any obituaries for Leo, Viola or Frank to help me further search for family members. I did read in an article that Ned Toth was the nephew of Frank McCloskey and took over the Clyde Beatty Circus.

Thanks!

Hi Cheryl,
Your tree information has helped me a lot.
I started my search about 15 years ago before Ancestry had very much information. My mothers brother William Ishmael told me they were from Blossburg/Morris Run, PA so I started looking there but my grandmother, Helen's sister had Americanized her name and had been know as Carrie Brown. So I didn't find anything. My biggest break came when I found their sister Theresa's marriage certificate to Louis Lenki in Chicago. I also found Cora's social security info. There I found their parents were Joseph Katlewski and Mary Machelski. Then I wrote for church records from Blossburg. That's when I found out my grandmothers name was Victoria. Born Dec.11, 1885. This birthdate matched Carries.
My uncle and my mom had told me the sisters name were Helen, Theresa, Ann/Anna, Cora/Coco. This all matched the few records I was finding, such as the passengers list in 1883
I do have pictures of the sisters. Including Helen I believe. They were in Chicago for some sort of celebration for Theresa. Around 1949?
I will try to send them to you.
I'm just learning how to use Ancestry so it would be easier for me to send via email.
Thanks Pat McPherson.
pattymac48@yahoo.com

Hi!
Yes, I have found out quite a lot, although NOT where, exactly, they came from in Poland. You can look at my tree, which is public: Cheryl Huffman

I would love to know more about your Great Aunt, and I'd be especially interested in pictures. My grandmother was Marion Victoria McCloskey WEARMOUTH, one of the younger of Helen's children. I've never seen any pictures of any of the other McCloskeys or the Katlewskis.

I found some good information about their time in Tioga County from www.joycetice.com. This is a website about two counties in PA and one in NY. Helen's brothers - Louis Benjamin and Theodore - moved north into New York eventually. Not sure about Floyd.

I'd love to connect and share more information.

Cheryl WEARMOUTH Huffman

McClosky In Wisconsin

I'm interested in finding anyone doing research on Mary Hogan McClosky Boyle(born Kings County Ireland) and her descendents. Her children were Mary McClosky born 1853 in Scotland, William McCloskey born in 1863 in New York and Joseph Boyle born in Wisconsin in 1969. Mary McClosky and her mother and her stepfather Henry Boyle lived in the Sun Prairie area of Wisconin. William McCloskey and his family lived in Greenbay, WI and Joseph Boyle and his family lived in Bark River, Michigan. I have some gaps in my research and I would like to exchange information if anyone is researching this family. Thanks

I am searching for information on Elizabeth Mc Closky who married Frank Steffen. The place may have been in the Lycerne County PA area, most specifically Grays Run PA. They had two sons that I am aware of, Howard Francis Steffen, and William Downs Steffen. These are my paternal uncle and grandfather. I would appreciate any information that would help!!!

McClosky mystery

Does anyone know anything about a Mae McClosky? She married Charles Heisley. They lived in Geauga County, OH for awhile, and had one daughter, Clara Bell there. Mae was born in 1873 and died in 1908. What is really strange is that the birth record of Geauga Co, reads "Mae Milscovsy", but my grandfather's bible says she was Mae McClosky. If anyone can give me any information on this woman, I would greatly appreciate it, or if anyone knows of a connection between Milscovsky and McClosky, I'd like to hear about that too. Thanks

Margaret McClosky of Lancaster Co. PA

I am looking for info on Abraham Dennis and Margaret McCloskey. According to the
Lancaster Examiner, April 5, 1832: "on the 18th Abraham Dennis to Miss Margaret
McClosky, both of Lampeter". The 1850 Census shows an Abraham and Margaret
Dennis of Bart Twp, with Abraham being 41 years old and Margaret being 44 years of
age. Their children are listed as:
Adrian 17, Mary 15, Elizabeth 14, Abraham 11, Adam 6, and Christian 3.

Tombstone inscriptions from the Zion Reformed (formerly Pequea) cemetery in New
Providence have a Margaret Dennis 5/1/1805 - 11/22/1889 buried there, and "Family
Tradition" says that Abram Dennis left his wife. No one else from that generation with
the name of Dennis appears in the cemetary. There are NO McClosky's in the cemetary
at all.

I am trying to link their child Abraham to my g-g-grandfather Abram Dennis. The ages
of this child and that of my Abram in various census data match, but that is not "real proof".

So if anyone knows anything about this family, I'd be very grateful. I'd be willing to exchange
everything I have on Abrams descendants

Michael was a coal miner and they had 12 children. Trying to find out where and when Michael died. I know it was between 1910 and 1920 from census information. Helen and many of the children ended up in Detroit, Michigan. My grandmother was their daughter Mary. The original name was probably Michloski or Mickloski.
The names in your family are similar to mine, but the PA McClosky's were not Polish as often believed, they were from Lithuania, and the name was formerly spelled Mikalauskas before coming to America...if you are related then the Polish side came from the Andrachaks who were from the Ukraine. I always teased my stepfather about being polish, but I guess the joke was on me since he was from Lithuania...I remember he had an Aunt Stella from WilkeBorro.....let'skeep in touch, I believe this is related.

I do not know yet if John and Stella were related to him, but I do know he had a lot of family in that part of PA and they all came from Lithuania. I do recall the name Stella from my childhood. Actually, Lithuania took turns falling under Poland and Russia rule over the years.

I do not know the time frame but I do believe it was my stepfather's parents that emigrated so it would have been the very early 1900's or late 1800's when Edward McClosky and Helen Emily Andrachak (Andrejezak) emigrated to Pennsylvania. I may be wrong though, it could have been their parents, but I do know that Helen came from a totally different country. I will try to contact a living relative and find out.

P.S. I would be interested in any info you have on this family.

Misty

When they emigrated from Lithuania in the 1800's and settled in Upstate Pennsylvania, they changed the last name to McClosky.

If anyone has this same connection, please email me!!
