Bible Pages/copies

Hi,
I am looking for the family record pages that were removed from an old (1700's?) German Bible many years ago. I saw the Bible in 1971 when it was in the possession of Robert J. McCandlish Jr. (b. 1909) of Fairfax County, Va. The pages were missing then.
The Bible enties would be for the name Swink (maybe Schwenk). Other possible names would be Kline, Landstreet, Lindsay, McCandlish, and Shreve.

Another item is a painting titled "The Huguenot Bride" depicting a father entering through a door to stop the wedding of his daughter. This painting is purported to be by William D. Washington.

Any help locating these items will be greatly appreciated.

Barrett Swink
fairfaxman@cox.net

Go to the Miami County index: http://www.pcdl.lib.oh.us/miami/searchw.cfm
Type in: wiltheiss
You will get 21 hits. These may be her parents, brothers, uncles and etc.
Recheck if William's last name was REALLY McCandlish!
In any case you have a 50/50 chance they came from either FRANKLIN or CUMBERLAND county Pennsylvania.
IF he did, get back with me, I have over SIXTY years research in these, and ONLY these, counties.

Richard Ferman
PS My g-g-g grandmother was Rebecca McCandless from Cumberland County, PA.

Hi – I am wondering if you are the same person who also posted a quantity of family portraits/photos on Picasaweb entitled ‘McCandlish-Strand Ancestors’.

My reason for asking is that I have an identical copy of the portrait on that site of William Dabney (my copy adds underneath ‘1772-1858’) who was my 5-greats grandfather. I am descended from William & his wife Hannah’s son Charles Henry Dabney of New York, via his (and his wife Ellen Maria Jones) daughter Emily M Dabney. I wonder whether you have any more information or good quality copies that you might be able to send me of other (presumably) mutual ancestors?

Please forgive me emailing you out of the blue – it gave me quite a surprise to see the same picture on the internet so I thought I had to follow this up!!

With best wishes

Tim Mason
Ipswich, UK
I have been researching her brother Robert Smith, a doctor of medicine.

The ancestor I am interested in is Jane Forbes nee Smith. (approx 1813 – 28/12/1888) I would love to learn more details about this Smith family, particularly their social standing.

Any further details will be much appreciated

I am a direct descendant of William McCandlish who was a younger brother of Dr James McCandlish. Both were born at Perclewan Mill, Dalrymple , Ayr. James was a classmete of Robert Burns and they were great friends. RB wrote his first poem "Handsome Nell" at the mill based on Nell Fitzpatrick the daughter of the Miller. Subsequently, James married Jean Smith who was the witty one of the six characters in the poem "Mauchline Belles"

You can find much info on the McCandlish or Candlish families (the MC was dropped about this time)by looking for them in the One World Tree via Ancestry.com. Alternatively look at www.robertburns.org/encyclopedia/SmithJean1768-1854.805.shmt....

Have a good search
Regards
Ron Hughes

Dr. James Candlish Friend of Rabbie Burns

I recently found that Robert Burns (Poet ) is noted to have had a best friend James McCandlish who was know as " Candlish " . James went on to study medicine to become Dr James Candlish , This family are from Scotland and lived at the same times as " Rabbie Burns " ,/ my mothers family are Candlish from Crosshouse in Ayrshire Scotland , we only have a record of members from 1890's 1900 upto date , in our area there are Candlish as well as McCandlish this was a strong coalmining community and dairy farm district of Scotland over the last century or so I'm in KILMAURS near to CROSSHOUSE & GATEHEAD where there are several of these named families . good luck to you all with your searches.
Seeking My Birth Mother

I was born on August 30, 1966 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Shortly after my birth, I was taken in the arms of our parish priest and given to Vincent and Vera Fisher to raise as their own. There was never a legal adoption until I was 19 years old and in need of a passport. When we went to court, my mother produced the hospital bracelet I was given as a newborn as evidence of my identity. It read "baby girl McCandlish", born at 5:55 AM on August 30, 1966. Since there was no adoption agency involved in my case, I am on my own in trying to find the person who gave me life. My parents are both deceased, Vincent in 1994 and Vera in 2000. I promised that I would never try to find my birth parents as long as they were living, but there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about and pray for the family that I know is "out there" somewhere. I am a very happy Roman Catholic nun living in Philadelphia, Pa. I love my life and just want my birth parents to know that they did the right thing when I was born. There are no accidents in God's providence - I'm proof positive of that! I would really love to hear from anyone who might know something about my family.

Fran,
Yes, I am a direct descendant of THE Robert McCandlish, who had son Thomas McCandlish, son Robert John McCandlish, there is where we part ancestry. Upton Beale McCandlish had a son Robert John McCandlish, who had another Robert John McCandlish, who had son Charles Sheild McCandlish, who fathered myself, the fifth Robert in my line and fourth Robert John in my line. We have a ton of information on and pictures of (and pictures of gravemarkers of) the many descendents of Robert, but unfortunately can go no further than you can as to Robert's predecessors in Wigton. My grandfather had a geneological researcher search for that information but he came up emptyhanded. Let me know if there's anything I can do for you. Unfortunately I am away from home in college and therefore dont have access to the records all of the time.
Robert J. McCandlish

Recently I obtained information about my McCandlish family.I was in search of John McCandlish who married Martha Webb and had one child named Jane McCandlish.Martha passed away and he got remarried to Jane Muirhead and they had Robert McCandlish,James McCandlish(my ggrandfather)It states on the marriage record which took place Feb 28 1873 That John McCandlish Parents were John McCandlish and Mary Ann Miller.Jane Muirheads parents were Agnes(unknown maiden name)and who was deceased at the time of this event and John Muirhead. It also stated witnesses being Helen Murihead(I am unsure of who she is.)This Event happened in Scotland.HOWEVER in the 1880 census it stated that John,Jane Muirheads father was living in the household and that Jane and John were born in Ireland.Does this sound familiar to anyone??

I am not related, but came across your post while searching for a possible Ledgerwood connection (another of your posts).
In case you have not found it, the following McCandlish family members are buried in the #9 Cemetery in the Town of Seneca, Ontario County, NY:
Alexander born in Galloway, Scotland 1761 d. 25 Mar 1824
Grace, his wife, born in Galloway, Scotland 1775 d. 17 Feb 1866
Peter 9 Nov 1804 - 3 Feb 1834, Soldier of Indian War 1828
Sarah N. 20 Oct 1816 - 10 Aug 1820

There are also members of the McCandlish family buried in the Little Church Cemetery, also in the Town of Seneca. The information can be found online at the Ontario County, NY GenWeb site.

Regarding your Ledgerwood post: I found Thomas, Margaret, and Mary Ann Ledgerwood in the 1875 Yates County Census in the Town of Benton household #1/248. Benton borders Seneca to the south.

I would be very interested in any information you have on the McCandlish family, especially what you've found out about the first McCandlish in Virginia.

I've found tiny bits about a Robert McCandlish - just that he sailed from Wigtownshire in 1760 and was a tutor. He married and produced 4 sons & 3 daughters. Do you know more than that?

Thanks for your help.

Fran Caldwell

We are looking for more info on John McCandlish who married Mary Drummond. He was born in 1820 and she was born in 1846 daughter of David and Margaret (Shaw) Drummond. They were all born in Scotland but I believe John and Mary were married in Delhi, NY. Would like to know who John's parents were. If we connect I have lots of info that I would share.
Marilyn, From what little info that I have John was born either in Ayr or Kinsley County? Supposedly down in the left hand corner of Scotland. A very small clan that did not get involved in wars etc. stayed more or less to themselves. I just got some info from my daughter and will be trying to check on that in Scotland. If any of this rings a bell please get back to me. Also this is my new email- beaugimp@mindspring.com

Hi Joan, sorry but I only have one John out of all the things I have and that is loads. The McCandlish name is not a common one in Scotland and I have done well to track so many of my 5th removed cousins who are also doing research. Do you have any idea of which part of Scotland that he came from ?

Marlyn
