Searching online threw up the only two newspapers published in Carlton County: the Moose Lake Star Gazette published 1885 to the present and the Pine Journal published at Cloquet from the mid 1880s to the present. I have failed to find tiotles of defunct Carlton County newspapers but by analogy with other Mid-Western locations, there may well have been other local newspapers being published around the time John McCandless died. The Minnesota History Society is the most likely organisation to have catalogued the state's defunct and surviving newspapers; the society participated in the US Newspaper Program 1982-2011 but I cannot find a state-wide catalogue of newspaper titles online, only a list of the selected titles that have been digitised. I presume that the Minnesota newspaper catalogue probably only exists in hard copy and that you would have to contact the society to obtain a full list of Carlton County titles with information on where runs can be consulted.The county historical society may also know where runs of Carlton County newspapers can be consulted.
