The following letter was written when Annie was 28 years old. Ellen, Jennie (Janet) Dean and the Clinks she speaks of are her sisters. Johnnie is her brother.

Brown City
Dec 12, 1889

Friend Phillip,
You must excuse me for writing to you. But as I was somewhat lonesome thought I would write to you.
We got a letter from Ellen yesterday. She is having a fine time and likes the place splendid. She is coming home for Christmas. Mrs. Delaney is coming with her and will stay a week.
Did you see Jennie Dean? She was up to the Henn's last week visiting. I think she is down to Clink's this week. However she wants to see you. She will be here a week from Sunday.
You had better come down. Henn's was down last Sunday with Otto.
Johnnie Reagan is going to leave our Brown going to Colorado this month. This is his last week in Brown City. Edna McIntosh made a party for him last Friday night. John Honse said it was a select party and I thought it was when he told who was there.
Brown City is going to have a party this week for Johnnie, his farewell.

(The next few lines are unreadable)

She will do any kind of work so that is the kind you are looking for. I could tell you the particulars of (unreadable) you. You know from an observation view of anything you can't do justice. Is Ellen knows she was down here this fall but I was not at home. I was sorry I wasn't at home when you were here. I came home on Tuesday. This will remind you of Cerena.

From That - Annie O'Brian

Lucy Ann Mcgregor - daughter of Peter Mcgregor and Lavina Poole born approx 1824
married Daniel Decow (Decou) and lived in Iona, Ontario. There are numerous descendants on record. The name "Deacon" is likely a misreading of the handwritten name on a document.

In researching Protestant James O'Briens in Ontario in order to locate a particular James, I found your information about James and Ann McLean O'Brien, who migrated to the USA, extremely helpful in eliminating a James O'Brien who was impossible to follow in Canadian records. You may already have the following information. I found on-line the 1848 Marriage Record of your James' and Ann's marriage performed by Rev. James Skinner, Church of Scotland: Aug. 31 James OBRIEN, Adelaide [Middlesex County], to Ann McLean, London. Wit: John Collie, Hector McLean.

I found the baptism records for two of their children, Elizabeth and Margaret, among the Wesleyan Methodism Baptismal Record on-line:
Area: McGillivray Township, Huron Co.
Name: Elizabeth O’Brian
Parents: James and Anne O’Brian
Residence: Biddulph Township
Birthplace: Biddulph Township
Date of Birth: 1853-12-12
Date of Baptism: 1854-05-22
Baptism Place: McGillivray Township
Minister: Webster, Rev. John
and
Area: McGillivray Twp, London District
Name: Margaret O’Brian
Parents: James and Anne O’Brian
Residence: McGillivray Twp
Birthplace: McGillivray Twp
Date of Birth: 1857-01-13
Date of Baptism: 1857-09-27
Baptism Place: McGillivray Twp
Minister: Koyle, Rev. E. S.

I also found in the 1861 Canadian Census in London Township the family of Hector and Janet McLean, including in 1861, their children, Margaret and Alexander, and granddaughter, Janet O'Brien, daughter of James and Ann McLean O'Brien. I found in the 1861 Canadian Census of Mosa Township Hector McLean whose religion was Baptist and whose wife was Flora, not Janet, and their family. These 1861 Census listings were as follows:
1861 Census, Mosa Township, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada
Hector McLean, 64, farmer, born in Scotland c. 1797, married in 1825, Baptist
Flora McLean, 67, born in Scotland c. 1794, married in 1825, FC (Free Church Presbyterian)
Lacklan McLean, 32, labourer, born in Upper Canada, FC
Roger McLean, 30, labourer, born in Upper Canada, FC
Alan McLean, 27, born in Upper Canada, FC
Don McLean, 29, born in Upper Canada, FC
(This Hector McLean is also in the 1852 and 1881 Canadian Censuses for Mosa Township. Roger's name may have been Rodrick. According to this Hector's 1886 Mosa Township death record, he was born in Argyleshire, a Disciple by religion, and lived to 90 years of age.)

1861 Census, London Township, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada
Hector McLean, 70, farmer, born in Scotland c. 1791, /c (? Presbyterian Church)
Janet McLean, 65, born in Scotland c. 1796, /c
Alexander McLean, 26, farmer, born in Upper Canada, /c
Margaret McLean, 21, born in Upper Canada, /c
Jonat Obrine, 9, born in Upper Canada c. 1852 (i.e., your Janet/Jennie, daughter of James and Ann McLean O’Brien)

Hence, the Hector McLean described in the 1871 Ontario, Canada Census Index, who was Baptist in religion, is slightly younger than your Hector McLean, and is not the correct husband of Janet McGregor McLean or the father of Ann McLean O'Brien and her siblings.
