Trying to trace back on my paternal grandmothers side. I'm back to John McBean who married Jeannie? McKay in Dalkeith in 1852 but that's where I hit the dreaded brick wall. I'd be grateful if anyone has any further info on John. Can supply my line of descent from John.

Gordon, whenever you hit a brick wall, you can do two things. You can either come back a generation, or spread out. By come back a generation, I mean research the children in much greater detail. Find every scrap of information for every one of them, and their spouses. By spread out, I mean research not just all the siblings of your brick wall couple, but also neighbors, friends, business associates, and fellow church members. Your brick wall should crumble like dried mud.
