This is just one of those coincidence things. My wife's father's side are McAuleys from Moneyslane (Drumgooland) Co Down. However, her mother uncle, Edward Gillanders, joined the Liverpool Metropolitan Police in 1896 and retired as a Chief Inspector (Acting Deputy Chief Constable at one point) in 1926 and therefore must have known your g g grandfather.
