The McAbee name is also a recognized/accepted spelling/variation of the name MacFie of the Clan MacFie and also of the Clan McBee...originally from Scotland but many migrated to Ireland in the later part of the 1600's.
The many variations are due to the name being spelled according to pronunciation...the Gaelic language can be hard to understand and people wrote the names as they sounded...at the time most people were illiterate and just accepted the spelling of their name.

I am a McAbee. I've looked far enough to see this. My father ran a blood test. Turns out our haplogroup (see Wikipedia) went through Israel. If you look McAbee is a different spelling of Jewish royalty. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maccabees

We fought off the Romans and another nation (the name slips my mind).

Tammie,
I would be happy to contact you if I only knew how. I will give you my contact info and we can go from there. I live on the NW Oregon coast. home phone is 503 398 5105 and cell is 503 812 1420. Give me a call anytime. I remember grand dad (Elbert) very well. Unfortunately he was the only member of the family I ever got to meet. I never met my grand mother (Geneveive Quinn-Torrence)as she died in a fire the year before I was born (1953). I am really looking forward to this. I have tons of questions. The bible I have is in really bad shape and I would like to have it restored but have no idea how to even start. This is all very new to me but I'm learning.
Mark Torrence

Hi Mark,

Fannie (Torrence) Turner was my grandmother. I remember Uncle Elbert comming to CO to see grandma. It is exciting to know someone has the Family Bible in thier hands. Grandma talked some about her brothers and Mom but wouldn't talk about her dad. I was fortunate to meet Elbert, Milton and Bill. Uncle Leon died when I was a little girl and Uncle Burke lived until after I was grown and married. I knew him quite well, he was a wonderful man. Uncle Leon's wife Mary passed away eariler this year. I have information and some pictures I can share with you if you will contact me privately.
Tammie (Turner) Maier

Hi,
My Name is Mark Torrence. I know these are old posts but I was hoping for some info and I think we are related. I have in my posession Ebenezer and Ola McAbee Torrences family bible. They were married in Texas on 29 Jan 1890. They had 13 children. Out of those only one (Fanny) was a female born 5 Nov 1898. They are all listed clearly with birth dates and some with dates of death. Ebenezer was born 5 Dec. 1850 and Ola was born 16 Apr 1871. Their son Elbert P Torrence was my grandfather. he died 19 Sept 1977. Any info you can provide would help me greatly in my endeavor to search out lost family and my nationality of origin.
Mark Torrence

Ref: Southern Claims Commission (1871-1880), Alabama Claims, Allowed - JAMES McAbee, Cherokee Co. Ala

(Images of this claim can be found online at Ancestry)

Short synopsis of this 26 page claim: In 1871, James McAbee stated he was 75 years old and that he was born in Spartanburg SC. He stated that he was a supporter of the Union before and after the Civil War. That he had two sons, Thomas of Pontotoc Co. Ms and James R., who were forced into the Rebel Army in 1862. That he resides on 80 acres of land owned by his son Barnette McAbee. He further stated that in October 1864 Genl. Sherman's troops were on the move toward Atlanta and passed through the area where he lived (near Howell's Crossroads, Cherokee Co. AL) and that they took his only horse, his four hogs and 10 bushels of corn.

The narrative continues as to the nature of his losses, efforts to regain his only horse, etc. Several of his neighbors testified to his character and his support of the Union. His son, James R. McAbee, also testified, as did his daughter Elizabeth Dobbins.

The writing in the document is often hard to read but makes for interesting reading and offers proof that James McAbee was the father of several Cherokee Co. AL McAbees.

I am tracing Barnette Gaines McAbee, the son James mentions in his claim. He moved from Cherokee Co. AL to northeastern Texas. James Riley McAbee and Barnettte Gaines McAbee also filed claims with the Southern Claims Commission but their claims were disallowed. There is an involved process in getting disallowed claims but I hope to pursue that avenue.

I hope this information helps those folks working on Thomas McAbee of Pontotoc Co. MS. I would love to have any additional information on him.

I am just starting out trying trace my family. I've picked the Mcabee line because it's the one I have the least amount of information on. My Father's name is Kenneth Herman Mcabee, and his fathers name was either Henry Herman or Herman Henry Mcabee. It's also rumored that he, my grandfather dropped an a out of our name. Supposidly my grandfather was named after his father, but I don't know if that's the Henry or the Herman. During my researched I found out that a Herman Mcabee died in Philidephia Pa in SEp 1973 and that's the last place I saw him the day JFK was buried.

If anyone can help me out, hints or information I would appreciate it..

This is an old message, Kenneth, so I hope my answer gets to you, and I hope you have made some progress since you posted in 2000. The best way to make progress in genealogy research is to start with yourself, and prove your relationship to your own parents -- in other words, get your birth certificate, and those of your siblings, if you have any. Then get your parents' info -- their death certificates and obituaries if they are gone, marriage info, their birth registrations, and the information about their siblings. You may be able to find them in the 1930 census, too, and begin working backwards. Then tackle the grandparents, and so on. If you are thorough, and take it step by step, you will uncover a WEALTH of information. Try to skip back too far, or leave out too many details, and you'll find the proverbial brick wall. Be methodical, and you will learn SO MUCH.

Good luck to you.

McAbee/McEvoy/McBee DNA Project

Hi McBees: We haven't had any DNA tests go to the Lab for ever so long, so I just had to let you know that we do have two new tests on order. Ciarán Ó Duibhín who lives in Northern Ireland has ordered a test for a McEvoy. We are hoping for a match with Ken McEvoy and if you all remember his results were really close to our Group 1 McBees. He was a match in the 12 and 25 marker tests, but then in the 37 marker test he has a genetic distance of 5 with Kay Arthur McAbee and Gregory Todd Boyd. Not a match, but really close. Then we also have a test on order for William Charles McBee who just ordered the test on April 19th. We hope that the test kit has arrived at his house and is on its way back to FTDNA. He has not sent me his family line yet, but I can hardly wait to hear from him. It is time for a little excitement in the McBee DNA group!!

See our webpage at:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/McBee/

We are looking for men to test with all of these different spellings of the name.

Mabe Macabee MacBee Mackbee
Magbee Magby McAbee McAboy
McAvoy McBane McBean McBee
McCabe McEvoy McVae McVay
McVea McVee McVeigh McVey
McVoy Mocabee Mockabee Mockbee

Everyone is welcome in our Group!

Gwen Boyer Bjorkman
gwenbj@seanet.com
I would like to find out who his parents were and so on. If any one has any information they can pass on it would be greatly apperciated. As you can see the names on the census don't always match up. So it has been hard to get a clear picture of this family.

Pam,
I have been looking for this family for a long time. Leola was my great-grandmother. I know she went to Texas at some point because she married Ebenezer Torrence in Hunt County 29 Jan 1889. My Grandma was born in Celeste TX 5 Nov 1898. She was the only girl out of 13 children. They arrived in Colorado about 1913. Leola died 27 Mar 1916 in ElPaso County, CO after giving birth to Uncle Leon. This is all I know about Grandma's mom and her family. Hope this helps on that end.

We are trying to find direct male descendants of the McAbee family of Spartanburg County South Carolina to participate in the McBee DNA Project. Currently we have four males from four different McAbee families who have completed the 37 marker test. They are perfect matches on the 12 and 24 marker tests which means that they are related. However when the test is expanded to the 37 marker test, none of them are an exact match. We need more participants in order to sort out the family relationships for the McAbee families of Spartanburg County South Carolina.
Abner McABEE, son or gson Absolom -- born Ireland?

Family folklore in my McAbee family states that Absolom McAbee was the grandson or son of Abner McAbee. Also, the death certificate for the youngest child of Absolom McAbee, Preston B. McAbee states that Absolom was born in Ireland. I don't think that is true but his father could very well have been born in Ireland. I found this reference and wonder if anyone else has seen it.

Name: Abner McAbee
Year: 1790
Place: America
Family Members: Son; Son Drury
Source Publication Code: 9255.7
Primary Immigrant: McAbee, Abner
Annotation: Hundreds of requests for information from Guild members. Date of emigration and intended destination or date and place of first mention of residence in the New World. Only individuals clearly listed as having emigrated were indexed.
Also, for purposes of Source Bibliography: [ULSTER GENEALOGICAL & HISTORICAL GUILD]. "Interest List." In Ulster Genealogical & Historical Guild, no. 9 (1986), pp. 1-42.
Page: 21
Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1899s Ancestry.com

I thought this was really interesting as it is the only reference for an Abner McAbee coming to the US that I could find. Also he had two sons with him and one was named Drury. Monte Hart had tried to find more proof about this theory. He located a reference to Abner McAfee

There is an Abner McAfee, who lived in Lincoln Co., N.C. in 1803 and was a son-in-law of Elizabeth Tate of Spartanburg Dist., S.C. in 1803. This is a possibility that this could be the Abner McAbee mentioned in the unproven statements that Absolom's grandfather was named Abner. Remote chance, but needs investigation. Source Spartanburg Deeds: book K, pages 206-207.

Does anyone know anything about Abner McAbee who immigrated to the US in 1790?
