I was recently looking into my family background, where the names came from. My mother's maiden name is McAbee and Both of us have looked in both Scottish and Irish meanings but can not find it in either. Then we got to looking and found out that it is possibly of Jewish decent. I would love to know. If someone out there knows for sure please email me.

It has always been told to me by my family that Mcabee means warrior. This is not conclusive however, but I was also told recently by a Jewish Rabbi that the Mcabee's in Scottland and Ireland were decendants from the Jewish Maccabbee's. I have not yet been able to confirm this.

Jewish heritage? McABEE adopted 1954 Suffolk VA

I have heard that as well; I always wondered why I felt drawn to synagogs and Jewish men! (I was raised Methodist) I am a McAbee adopted from day one in Suffolk, VA in 1954. The only things I can find are my mom's name (she was unmarried and stated her parents were both deceased and only had one brother).
He was military, but I have no name there either. Only the uncle and aunt she was living with at the time who have since passed away in West virginia. Any idea where to go next?

Paula, have you registered your name with the various Adoption Triad groups? Have you posted a detailed query on the Missing Family & Friends board, http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/board/rw/topics.lost-famil...

Have you investigated all of the various resources in CyndisList, http://www.cyndislist.com/adoption.htm ?

I wish you all the luck in the world.

I am a McAbee. I've looked far enough to see this. My father ran a blood test. Turns out our haplogroup (see Wikipedia) went through Israel. If you look McAbee is a different spelling of Jewish royalty. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maccabees

We fought off the Romans and another nation (the name slips my mind).

The McAbee name is also a recognized/accepted spelling/variation of the name MacFie of the Clan MacFie and also of the Clan McBee...originally from Scotland but many migrated to Ireland in the later part of the 1600's.
The many variations are due to the name being spelled according to pronunciation...the Gaelic language can be hard to understand and people wrote the names as they sounded...at the time most people were illiterate and just accepted the spelling of their name.
