Albert (Adelbert) Maske (Maszke) (Maschke) (Manzke) (Moski) (Matzki) (Matzke)

Hello,

On my mother's side I have been able trace back to Adalbert Maschke. He was married Marianna Apolonia Waldoch. They were married in sometime between 1860 - 1865 in Saoszewo,,Westpreussen,Prussia / Skorzewo, Pomern (Pomorskie) (Poland). Adalbert was born in Pomerania, Prussia in 1833. They departed Hamburg in 1884 and arrived in New York in 1885. When they came to the U.S. they had their children with them - Martin, Marriana, Elizabeth, John, and Anna. Elizibeth was Married to Henry Becker (I believe they were married after Elizabeth came to the U.S.) and these were my great grandparents. When they came they moved to Minnesota were they were some of the very first people there. They helped to build a schoolhouse and eventually moved to Montana.

However I'm unable to find any relatives past Adalbert (Albert) Moschke. I see many others here with the name Moschke that also come from the same area in Poland/Prussia they may be related but right now I have no records that extend into Poland/Prussia.

I have quite a bit of information for the Becker side but I would like to find more info in the Moschke side of my family. Also when looking into this I find that there are more than a few references to this being a Jewish name. Is this true? I know Adalbert claimed to be a Catholic but from my research into this I also know that in these areas it was quite common for Jewish persecutions before and during the years that they moved to the U.S. so it may be so.

Any help would be appreciated. Anybody can contact me at webmedic@gmail.com.
Gottfried junior, Gottlieb and Christian Matzke were all brothers. They immigrated to the US from Germany in 1856. Their father and mother Gottfried senior and Dorothea were also on the ship. There was also a Carl Matzke and his wife Elisabeth. I haven't been able to figure out if Carl is another brother, making it 4 sons, or the younger brother of Gottfried senior.

They spent some time in Eastern Wisconsin before settling in the Winona, Minnesota area (the Norton Township to be exact). They are in Wisconsin on the 1860 census. Minnesota on the 1870 census.
My Great Grandfather was Gottfried Matzke. His brother was Gottlieb. Not sure about either of their middle names.

They lived in the Norton Township near Winona, Minnesota.

Gottlieb was a lifelong bachelor.

Are you a Matzke?

It appears Sarah (Witt) Matzke died about 1909. On the way to Colorado it appears they stopped in Green Cty WI and stayed with the Matzke/Witt relations for a short time.

Friends from Nebraska, Benj. and Maggie Busboom Ferd. in Colorado.

Ben and his son George Thomas got a permit from the Fed. Govt. to lumber near Denver. Ben Busboom died, Sarah was dead; the widdow Maggie Busboom married the widower Ferd. Matzke.

I found out a little more about your ancestors but before I forget;

Scheurn - that may have originally been Schwerin. They were related to the Matzke's, Witt's and Hartwich's long before they came to America. If you happen to know who your Scheurn ancestors are, please let me know as they are related to me.

In 1920, age of 12, Emma Matzke is found living with her sister Elanore in Craig, Moffat, Colorado. Elanore is married to Earl Van Tassell. It's assumed her parents must have died.

I was able to find birth/death and burial locations for some of her brother Franks children.

Sarah J Witt's Grandmother was also a Matzke. The Matzke's used marriage makers (unless of course someone got pregnant first.

Until her death, Anna (Kopplin) Witt was the marriage maker in America. After her death it looks like Agusta Matzke, daugher the Fredrich W Matzke took over.

Your Matzke line, for the most part, moved back and forth between Green Cty WI and Saline Cty Nebraska. We also have cousins from that generation that moved to what is now Duluth Kansas (origianally Doelitz Kansas, named after the area in Prussia where they farmed. Doelitz became part of Poland after WWII and is now Dolice Poland.

Ferdiand + Sarah
http://coplien.com/family.php?famid=F613
Re: Ferdinand Matzke and Sarah Witt

WOW...is right. What I know is that Ferdinand and Sarah landed in Dever, Colorado. I only know of two children but there may have been many more. I have a copy of the obit of Frank A. Matzke, a son, whose children were listed as Ferdinand P., George H., Conrad F., Glen E.,Rev. Warren R. Matzke,Ruth E. Manning, Lois Cornelius. My ggrandmother was Emma, Ferdinand and Sarah's daughter. She married Jacob Scheurn Fort Lupton, Colorado in 1904. The "early" birth of my grandmother Pearl Marie Scheurn caused a rift between Emma and the Scheurns (I'll bet it did). Anyway Pearl was put in an orphanage by her morther and rescued by her father's mother who is listed as Mrs. Peter Scheurn in her obit of which I have a copy( I think her name was Anna) My grandmother Pearl married Andrew Jackson Cochran and lived in Denver. Their son Paul married Mary Ruth Simpson in Denver and in 1948 Tanya Cochran (me) was born. I married Jerry Kountz from St Joseph, Missouri. We live in Bonham, Texas and have three children Brandon, Stefanie, and Dustin. We also have 10 grandchildren. This is what I know about my side of the family. I would be interested to know about Frank and Emma's siblings. Ferdinand and Sara's history...where did they live? What was his job? etc. I do have a picture of Emma when she was older and remarried to a Vallery gentleman. It says on the back of the picture it was taken in Oak Creek, Colorado. Apparently Emma was the black sheep of the family, and we as a family don't know a great deal about her. I hope this is helpful and any such information you can share I would love to know. By the way, I have a notation made by my Aunt Jackie, my father's sister, that Sarah Jane Witt Johnson was buried in Riverside Cemetery I assume in Denver,Colorado. One more thing Emma's full name was Emma Augusta Matzke. I hope you can glean some helpful information from this ..

I have a copy of the obit for Mrs. Peter Scheurn whose first name may have been Anna or Kathryn. She was born in Germany in 1850. She moved from Michigan to Denver. She was crippled in her youth so she was confined to her home. The obit said she was survived by her husband and five sons-J.A. Scheurn and Henry Scheurn of Los Angeles, California; J.F. Scheurn and Peter C. Scheurn of La Salle, Colorado, and C.C. Scheurn of Denver- a sister, Mrs. Kate Heintz,of Golden, Colorado, sixteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild who I assume was my grandmother Pearl whom she rescued from the orphanage. I hope this is of use. Also, she must have been Catholic because her funeral service was held in St. Elizabeth's Church in Denver and she is buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery also in Denver.

Where are your Matzke/Metzke's from? My grandfather was Adolph Joseph Metzke, b. in Columbus, TX. His father, Edward Josef Matzke was b. in Moravia (Austria, now Chekoslovakia). Any chance these families are related to yours?

Matzke in Milwaukee, WI

My 2nd g grandmother is Johanna Marie Heniette Matzke- Kirchhoff b 1835 in Germany m 14 Jun 1857 to Franz F Kirchhoff. Her parents are believed to be William Matzke and Frederike Ziettow or Ziettlow- Matzke. Frederike died 1 Dec 1885 in Milwaukee. Mother and daughter are buried in Union Cemetery in Milwaukee, same plot along with a 18 girl Bertha Matzke that died 16 Sep 1870. I have a 1885 death cert for Frederike which has very little info, and a marriage cert for Johanna married at the Lutheran Trinity Church in Milwaukee. On some church records they list a Ernst Matzke, Wilhelmine Matzke and Ida Matzke as sponsers. This line has been a brick wall for me. If any one has information about this line in Milwaukee please contact Debra at wfowler2@cfl.rr.com

My grandfather Charles Matzke, and his father William Karl Matzke, lived in Alpena, Michigan. My father has told me that his father was born overseas and only spoke German when he arrived, He was about 5 years old at the time.
My father is Dick Matzke Son of Charles and Edna matzke, He said some of his brothers spelled the name with an e instead of an a, So the variation even among siblings can creep in and make changes. Keep in touch please, I am interested in finding my grandfathers parents, William I am told, and following the trail fom there. If you have any information I would appreciate the help.

Dads name is Dick not Richard a common mistake. Dad was the second youngest I believe of 10, I only met a few of his brothers and sisters, Uncles; Vernon "Buck" Matzke, Charles "Chuck", Doug, Jay, We had/have an Aunt Donna, and I belive he had another sister who died a long time ago, I think her name was Sally. Another sister live in Gramps's house in Alpens, I cannot remember her name off hand, I will ask Dad. also, Dad told me that their are variations in the spelling of the name even among the family like Motzke, Matzke, and Metzke. i hope this helps you
