Looking for evidence of the maiden name and parentage of the wife of William Smith Mattoon (1807-1865) of Canaan, Columbia co, NY.

She is said* to have been Margaret Short (1811-1863), and to have been a sister of Phoebe Catherine Short (dau of Peter W Short & Margaret Hasbrouck, bpt. 12 Apr 1817 in Woodstock, Ulster co, NY) wife of William's brother Benjamin Mattoon.

* Manhood and Patriotic Awakening in the Civil War: The John E Mattoon Letters, 1859-1866 --- a fascinating book, but with some errors in the family tree info.]

I've seen plenty of info from trees and gedcoms and published family genealogies, but have yet to find a verifiable source.

Alan,
I'm extremely interested in the information you've uncovered that Lydia (Clough) Mattoon was a daughter of John and Dolly (Lawrence) Clough. A cousin of our line, Sarah (Newell) Coats of Syracuse, N.Y., granddaughter of my ancestor Benjamin Lawrence, named Abner C. Mattoon executor and heir in her will and refers to him as "my cousin." I've felt for a while that the relationship must be through the Lawrence family rather than the Newells or Mattoons since Lydia named her son by Oren Monroe, George Lawrence Monroe. Your information appears to confirm this. I suspect that Dolly (Lawrence) Clough is the Dorothy Lawrence born July 29, 1766 in Groton, Mass., daughter of Isaac and Mary (Bailey?) Lawrence, and that her brother Benjamin, born in Groton July 15, 1761, is my ancestor. According to The Genealogy of the Family of John Lawrence, by John Lawrence (1857) and Claremont, N.H. cemetery records, several families of Lawrences from Groton settled in Claremont. Do you have any additional information on Dolly or the Lawrences? I'm happy to share any info. I have, either through this board or by email at Rodjr732@aol.com.
Many Thanks,
Rodney Dillon

Henry Mattoon and Lydia Ann Clough are the parents of Abner Clough Mattoon and Charles Clow Mattoon. Lydia Ann Clough is the daughter of John Clough, of Colchester, VT, and Dolly Lawrence, of Claremont, NH. Siblings of Lydia Clough include Nathaniel Clough, Sally Clough, Olive Clough and Benjamin Clough. Lydia Clough married a second time, Oren Monroe, after Henry Mattoon died approximately in 1828. Most of this information was found in John Clough's Revolutionary War Pension documents and some of Abner C. Mattoon's biographies. I still suspect Henry Mattoon to be a son of John and Chloe Mattoon but I have no prove. Does anyone have any information on Henry Mattoon?

So am I :)

From what I know, Alfred Mattoon died 20 Apr 1854 and his grave is at Shelby-Oakland Cemetery...as is his wife's. She was born in Mar 1801 and died 12 Apr 1875. Some of this info is from the Richland County Obits page.

He had at least two sons. Horace B(igelow?) Mattoon and John G Mattoon. Horace Married Martha E Martin (daughter of William Martin of Pennsylvania) in Richland County in 1854. John G Mattoon married Sophia Richard.

If you are researching the Mattoon family, my particular interest lies with Horace B Mattoon's line. I have found only two children of H B Mattoon and Martha E Martin and both lived short lives.

Frank W Mattoon - 11 Nov 1856 to 26 Feb 1880
Lincoln Mattoon - 1 May 1860 to 19 Nov 1860

I am helping my husband with his family genealogy. I am looking for information on Floyd Mattoon (married Mildred Lila Van Halstine), Loren Mattoon (married Lois C. Sole). I have a free account where I can create a tree and view a tree my cousin made for our side of the family. My husband's relatives all bring up hints that show they are listed in someone's tree but I can't bring them up- I'm guessing it's a private family tree?

The sources that I have cited make me confident that Abigail Skinner was the mother of Isaac's last ten children.

From my analysis of census and other information it is clearly indicated that Polly Mattoon was too old to have been the mother of Major Rugg. Polly apparently died after the 1810 census of Jefferson Co., NY and before the birth of Catherine Rugg in Genesee Co. in 1814. I reached this conclusion independently of the information in Dilley, p. 198, which should be considered authoritative, and I believe that no one has presented any evidence to the contrary.

The Polly Mattoon who fits the other data is the Polly born 10 Apr 1778 in Athens, Windham Co., Vermont.

morcoco

Re: Polly Mattoon

Three Wives and 13 Children of Isaac Rugg

Research of documentary sources shows that Isaac had one child by Dorcas Gates, two children by Polly Mattoon, and ten children by Abigail Skinner.

Ellen Rugg's genealogy of the Rugg family failed to indicate when Isaac married each of his three wives and which children were born by which wife, so it is necessary to use other sources. A description of the Isaac Rugg family is given in the "Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Chautauqua County, New York", Butler F. Dilley, Editor, Philadelphia: John M. Gresham & Co., 1891, p. 198. "Isaac Rugg, the great-grandfather of [Corydon A. Rugg] was born near Bloody Point, in Vermont, served in the Revolutionary war and died in his native State at Ruggtown, which was named in honor of his family. He was a Methodist and was married three times. His first wife was Katie Gates, who bore him one child, Jonathan [Corydon's grandfather], and after her death he wedded Emma Mattoon, who died and left two children, John and Aurelia. His third wife was Abigail Skinner, by whom he had ten children." Also see William Adams’ 1893 book on Perrysburg stating that Catharine was the daughter of Isaac and Abigail, and by inference the 9 children born later were also children of Abigail. In summary, Isaac’s first wife, Dorcas Gates, b. 1770 in VT, had son Jonathan Gates Rugg, born 25 Dec 1794 in Whitingham, Windham Co., VT. Isaac's second wife, Polly (or Emma) Mattoon, had two children, Orilla Rugg and John Rugg, born while Isaac lived in Washington or Jefferson Counties, northern New York. Abigail Skinner, Isaac’s third wife, at age 22, had Catherine B. Rugg, born 28 Jan 1814 in Genesee Co. NY, and 9 children born later in Cattaraugus Co. New York (Dorcas, Richard, Susan, Almira, Isaac, Major, Fidelia, Polly and Abigail Mary). Note that the 1800 census of Bolton, Washington Co. NY, shows Isaac Rugg’s household of 3, two male ( Isaac and presumably his son Jonathan) and one female age 16-26, the right age for second wife Polly Mattoon, (daughter of nearby Abel Mattoon), an age that does not fit with the birth date of Dorcas Gates in 1770. Isaac’s census listing in 1810 is probably the hardly legible listing of Rodman, Jefferson Co. NY, where he is indexed as “Rosh”--his family includes a female, age 26-45, probably Polly Mattoon and including children Orilla Rugg and John Rugg. The death of Dorcas (Gates) Rugg must have been on or after the birth of Jonathan 25 Dec 1794 and before the 1800 census, say 1897. The death of Polly (Mattoon) Rugg must have been between the 1810 census and the 28 Jan 1814 birth of Catherine Rugg, say 1812.
Polly Mattoon

It is often quoted that Isaac Rugg married Polly Mattoon, b. Hampshire Co. MA in 1769 (dau. of Abel Mattoon and Mary Allen). If Mary Allen was born in 1756, she would have been 13 years old at the birth of Polly.

I wonder if this might be inaccurate, and that he married Polly Mattoon, listed as born in Athens, Windham Co. VT 10 Apr 1778 (IGI). I also have seen a marriage date of 18 Mar 1778 for Abel Mattoon and Mary Allen.

Does anyone have info to resolve these questions?

morcoco

One more item of confusion. Did this John Matton leave the Mass. area, move to Vermont for a short while before moving on to Ohio? I've seen historical references saying that he came from VT. Also, some of is early children may have been born in VT (e.g. Willis Matton, for one).

Thanks.

Jim

From the April 1907 Old Northwest Quarterly p 134 (reprinted in "Our Ancestors of the Westerville area, a Genealogical History" Harold Hancock, Ed 1981)

"John Mattoon and wife, Thankful Stebbins, and his two brothers, Seth and Anson, came from Chelsea, Vt., to Worthington, Ohio in 1806, and he, with wife, removed to the northwest section of Blendon township in 1808."

I live in the area and could take photos of the stones, I know a couple are in poor shape. (one is Orren Matton who died in 1823, son of J & T, another is an infant of Willis)

There is also an Austin Stebbins buried in Pioneer Cemetery, don't know if he is related to Thankful or not.

Abner Mattoon's obituary in the Oswego Daily Times gives his birthdate as Oct. 15, 1814. It also states that he was the son of Henry Mattoon. Does this fit in anywhere?
Does anyone know of any connection between Abner and the Newell or Lawrence families? In her 1887 will, Sarah H. Coats of Syracuse, daughter of John and Avis (Lawrence) Newell, makes bequests to Caroline N. Mattoon of Oswego, describing her as "wife of my cousin Abner C. Mattoon."

I am happy that you wrote me about the Mattoon family history. No, I have not found any thing more but, I am sure the Mattoon family has a wonderful history. Those who servived the Indian Massacars in Deerfield, MA had to be very strong people. That is quite a history ...of it's own.
I would really like to find the book you speek of and add it to my own genealogy library.
Thank you again for writing me about the family history by Lillian and Donald Mattoon....
Respectfully Yours,
Angie

Have you had any concerns about the Family Data Collections being inaccurate? I've also had concerns over who the mother's are for all the children.

Abigail Mattoon was born Abigail Chappell. After the death of her husband, Gershom Mattoon, she married Moses Hutchinson on 12 Feb 1755. She could be the daughter of Jonathan and Ruth (Hutchinson) Chappell of Hebron. If so, she would have been born 4 Oct 1724.

Hi Angie,

Did you find any further information on Philip? I just finished skimming my copy of the Mattoon Family Geneology (by Lillian & Donald Mattoon, 1965). I'm descendant #6775, an Addenda baby. What an incredible amount of scholarship. I just did a quick internet search and saw your post. (Was dismayed/amused to see the first entries of Philip Mattoon as quite the rowdy, and also surprised to see him listed as coming from Scotland. I didn't see any of that in the Geneology and kind of like to think our Philip is a direct descendent of the 1621 Hugenots.) I thought the third post with the English connections was interesting--The Hugenots emigrated from both Wallonia and England.....) My mother took my grandfather (Ivan Mattoon) to Deerfield on a pilgrimage of sorts years ago. We're of the Oregon/California clan....

Mattoon Book

Years ago this lady was doing research on the Mattoon Family and had two books made for us. It was a black leather bound book with the coat of arms, had pictures of Mattoon's in it and was dated way back to the 1600's. Originally from France where they started out from. It tells where the guys on the railroad played a game of poker and the guy that won could name the town and that town was Mattoon Ill. I am 53 yr. old and my name is in the book. I borrowed to my half sister and she said she didn't have it or lost it or just won't give it back. Cool book though.

John Mattoon & Thankful Stebbins - Franklin County, Ohio

I have just discovered their tombstone in the West Pioneer Cemetery, Westereville, Blendon Township, Franklin County, Ohio. It shows John Mattoon died 9 June, 1843 in his 77th year and Thankful Stebbins died 31 Oct, 1861 in her 88th year.

Can anyone confirm that John Mattoon was the son of Philip Matton and Hannah Stratton from Northfield, Franklin County, Mass. Birth dates seem consistent with children of Philip and Hannah, although many of the listings show John and Thankful dying in Mass. I'm not sure that is true.

Also, that this Thankful Stebbins is the daughter of Moses Stebbins and Dorcas Hale from Wilbraham, Hampden Cty, Mass.

John and Thankful show up in the 1830 and 1840 census records in Blendon Twshp, Franklin Cty, Ohio. Thankful also shows up in the 1860 census - same location. I've also found land records and children's marriages that support that John and Thankful were in Franklin Cty, Ohio.

Appreciate any help in sorting this out. Thank you.

Jim
