Mystery Man - James Thomas Matthews ...

I am trying to find information on my Great Grandfather, James Thomas Matthews but he is proving very hard to find.

I have his marriage and death certificate and I know his history from the time he married in Australia but backwards I am at a loss.

He was born in Middlesex London c1879. His parents are listed as Fred and May (no surname for May on either certificate). I do not know if he had any siblings. I assume his father is Frederick considering James named one of his sons Frederick. Considering he has not listed his mothers surname I can only assume that he did not know it. (What other reason would there be?)

He moved to Australia when he was about 17 as his Death Certificate suggested that he'd lived in Australia for 62 years. He died in Brisbane, Queensland in Feb 1958 - buried at Toowong Cemetry.

He was a Boer War veteran too although I cannot find his name anywhere. I assume he had a soldiers funeral too as the funeral home had a record of him being burried with a flag and there being a procession with a road-block.

He married Harriet Covey in Brisbane in 1914 and had four children - Jack, Thomas, Frederick and Dorris (my Grandmother).

Prior to Harriet he had been briefly married to Ellen Hollingsworth (1911 to 1913) - no children.

I can only assume that we have his name incorrect. My mother knew him as Thomas but when we received his certificates we learnt that is was actually James Thomas Matthews. In addition to his marriage and death certificate I have also found him on the Australian Electoral Rolls (1901-1936) as James Thomas Matthews.

In any case, I cannot find him as James Thomas or Thomas James.

I am unable to move on with this line of research until I find him.

PLEASE does this sound familiar to anyone?

Kind Regards,
Katherine.

Nellie Mabey nee Matthews

This is like searching for a needle in a haystack! but Nellie was my grandmother and I cannot find any record of her on the 1911 census. She was born 28th December 1910. He mother was an Elizabeth Cripps and her father was a Frederick Matthews. My problem is there has become some confusion since she died on what he birth name was as she was always known to us as Nellie but on my dads birth certificate it says Lily but I cant find anything for either name on the records.

Also Frederick Matthews was one of three of the fathers to Nellie's brothers and sisters but I dont know if her mother was actually married to Frederick at the time of the census, nor do I know where she was born.

I know she married my grandad, Arthur William Mabey, in Southampton in the 1930's but I dont think she was born in Southampton.

I know this is a difficult one as it's fairly recent so anyone who knows would have to be a pretty close link to my family. But if anyone has any clues on how to find her details it would be a great help!
Thanks!
Cayley Mabey

Hello Howard,

Back in 2001 I received an email from, I believe, your daughter Marie Denn concerning our relationship through the Humphries family. My Grandmother was Mary Humphries Loucks, of Scottdale, PA. Her father was Enoch Humphries, brother to Reuben Humphries. I was born in Scottdale back in 1941 to Keith Loucks, son of Mary and Royden Loucks. Marie was very helpful in providing some details about the Humphries family and I'd like to contact her again, with your permission. Her Hotmail address no longer works. Next June there is a 300th anniversary celebration of the Loucks family coming to America. I'm trying to update my family tree and would appreciate any additional information on the Humphries you care to share with me. you can contact me directly at guyloucks@yahoo.com

Regards,
Guy Humphries Loucks

My great uncle was Lee Corydon Matthews born 02 Feb 1871 in NY. I beleive that it may be possible that he was the wife of Leola. I met him for the first time in 1955 in Grants Pass, Oregon when he was 82. I met his current wife, but I couldn't remember her name. She was 84 at the time and we heard later that she had died not too long after we had visited with them. Lee died in 1959 in Humbolt County, CA.
My email is Bagots@aol.com if you would like to communicate with me. I would love to know if she was in fact married to my great uncle. Roberta Lowder Licalsi

Look at McDonough County, Illinois. Their mother Mary Ann Jones was the daughter of Ashbury (may be mispelled)Berry Jones and Elizabeth Massingill (many versions of this spelling). Martha Ellen Matthews (sometimes spelled Mathews) sister Amanda Elizabeth Matthews was my husbands GG Grandmother. George W Matthews was Martha Ellen Matthews father and his father was Benjamin Matthews and Milda Mary Polly Shoopman. They lived in McDonough County, Illinois for many years and Elizabeth Massingill actually was married 3 times. Her final husband was John J Moore. Berry Jones and Elizabeth Massingill were divorced in Iowa in 1840. Mary Ann Jones was born in Iowa in 1835 along with a sister Abigail (Abbie) and a brother who I don't know what his name was. Elizabeth and children went back to McDonough, Ill and there she married John J Moore. I have her obit. Hope to hear from you.
Michelle
michellesmith@ebby.com

Mary Matthews born 1810?

I"m looking for any birth or marriage information on Mary Matthews. Not sure where she was born, probably KY or SC about 1810. She died in Johnson County, Illinois in 1884. May also be listed as Mathis. She arrived in Illinois sometime before 1850 with her children, but no husband. I believe he died in Kentucky. I have a marriage license of a Mary Matthews and John Roberts from Hopkins County, KY in 1825, this may be here. Anyone have any info?

s0315@yahoo.com
Steve Roberts

James Matthews

I have tried relentlessly to find information on my GGrandfather James Matthews who married Josephine Augusta Colburn in 1891. They had four children; Ray Harold, Hazel Helen (Fern), Fred Whitney and Clark Hollis. My Matthews side has very little information on James. I am hoping the Colburn or Miller families have some. He was born in Michigan, April 1862. To date I have 4 siblings for him: Clark, Scott, Henry and a sister Rhonda married to Louis Miller. From 1880 - 1891 his whereabouts are unknown. He was a sheep farmer with the Colburn brothers. I can't get past James, he is my block. Any information is greatly appreciated. You may email me @my56libra@aol.com. Thank you, Patricia
