Re: Franklin and Nellie Matchette

Jennifer:

My family tree has a Franklin Matchette (my grandfather's eldest brother)who was born in Black River Falls, WI near Tomah/Sparta. My dad's middle name was Franklin, named after his uncle. Franklin Matchette started out in the hotel business, moved to New York City where he became an entrepreneur businessman. He and Mr. Statler of the original Statler/Hilton hotel company built the Pennsylvania Hotel which still stands across from Madison Square Garden. He also built an apartment building across from Central Park that he lived in and in which the actress, Gloria Swanson, occupied the penthouse. He also invented a vacuum cleaner as well as the "Servidor", a shell-like addition to a hotel room door that allowed people to leave their clothes in for laundering. He was wealthy when he died and gave his money to Columbia and Purdue Universities for Metaphysic's Chairs, an endowment that still rmains today.

I trust that somewhere along the line this Franklin Matchette is related to the one you're looking for. It is possible, given the dates you mentioned, that this is the same person.

I hope this helps a bit.

Regards,

Jeff Matchette

Frank C. or Herbert L. Matchette (Matchett)

I am looking for any information on Frank C. Matchette born in appox. 1892 in Washington, but possibly Wisconsin. He lived in Los Angeles for awhile but I'm not sure how long. I am also looking for any information an Herbert L. Matchette born Feb. 5th, 1895 in Wisconsin. He also went by the name of "Bert" and resided in California for awhile. He died in Wickenburg Arizona July 1979. I believe the two are brothers and their father would be Herbert George Matchett ( he spelled it Matchette until sometime in the 1920's). Herbert G. Matchett was born on April 28, 1861. Died in Kapowsin Washington on June 7th, 1945. I know he had other children after this but any information on these two or their mother/ grandparents would be greatly appreciated. Again, I am just trying to verify this information, if for some reason I am mistaken, please let me know!
Thanks,
June (Matchett) Johnson
