My Great Great Grandfather is also William Matchet Landis and my Great Great Grandmother, Sarah Winters, My Great Grandfather is Edward Landis, (is William and Sarah's(one of three I have on 1860 Census) and Great Grandma Martha Allen Pontious his wife. and Ira Joseph Landis, my Grandfather, Son of Edward and Martha Landis. I found Williams Matchet Landis's parents on Grave Finder. My aunt who has passed away a while back had found Samuel and his children but for some reason didn't have his wife. But me and my daughter had found them both with the death dates and location, we found on Grave Finder, Samuel's Wife is Elizabeth Stretch. That is as far back as I have gotten but on Family Search, it goes back even further, but I want to find records to verify that they're correct. Still want to find more on Samuel and Elizabeth to make sure that these are the correct one. I am attaching photos my mother had of these people. William looks just like my eldest brother.
Yes My G Grandfather was Ephraim Matchett Johnson, born 1840 in Crawford County, Georgia, . His grandparents, William and Alice, possibly Alice Matchett, or Mac Hett, were from Wayne County, NC. I have found that Matchet Johnson , born 1812 ,married 14 Sept 1837 to Cynthia Ogburn, born 1815 and her sister, Sarah Ann Ogburn, born 1817, married 13 Dec 1838 to Ephraim Matchet's father, James Johnson, born 1810 in NC, my G G Grandfather. Matchet Johnson's parents were Ephraim Johnson and Rebecca Jackson Johnson. Rebecca's sister was Elizabeth Jackson who married Littleberry Ogburn, Sarah Ann's and Cynthia's parents. Matchet Johnson, born 12 Jan 1812 , NC died 6 Sep 1887 Schley Co., GA took an Oath of non aggression on 31 July, 1867 . Matchet's sons, Greenberry Johnson, J.S. Johnson and E.W. Johnson (Ephraim William) were executors for his estate dated 18 Feb, 1888 in Schley County, GA In the 1850 Census , he and his second wife, Martha Ann Mathis Johnson were living in District 29, Sumter, Georgia, and his name was spelled "Makhet". They had six children plus a Mary Johnson (sister?) and her son, Millage.`

Yes Ephraim Matchett Johnson was born in Crawford County, Georgia in 1840. I believe his father was brought there in 1822 as a young boy from near Goldsboro, NC, possibly Waynesboro, NC, , in Wayne County, NC.,which was a few miles away, but the railroad caused the town to move to Goldsboro. Ephraim's mother was Alice, possibly Matchett, or Mac Hett.

Hi Lucy

Great to hear from you. And congratulations on being a mum, I'm impressed you find time to do any family tree with little ones around. I find it hard enough and my boys are 14 and 11 now! I guess it makes it a little easier actually being in N Ireland and having family around to ask though.

It would be great to see the marriage certificates, etc that you have, (I really have no hard copies of those except a copy of William James marriage cert that Jake kindly forwarded to me). My Dad left Belfast to join the RAF when he was 18 and was never the best at keeping it touch! Thank goodness for Iris, she seems to know everybody and everything!

Thanks so much for getting in touch and don't feel under any time pressure for the info, I appreciate whatever you can do.

Cousin Selina!

Hi Selina!
Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you, I have a different ancestry account with my married name so had to get it up and running again! I was just talking to Iris the other day!
Lily Matchett was my Granny so I think that makes us second cousins? My dad is your dad and Iris's first cousin.
I haven't been doing very much family tree stuff recently as I've added 2 small people to the tree and they keep me pretty busy!! But I intend to get up to speed again so it's good that you made contact as it's given me a push in the right direction!
I'll dig out the info I have and send it on, we (Dad and I) have quite a lot of marriage certs etc from the Matchett side so hopefully it will help you :)
Chat soon!
Lucy

Their daughter, Elizabeth, was born in 1837 and dies in 1927 and, astonishingly, my aunt (b.1918) has many memories of her. They lived in the Birches area of Co. Armagh.
Hi Lucybstewart, I have been meaning to research my dad's family tree for a while but never had the time until now while I am laid up after an op. I believe we are related through your dad's grandmother (Lily Matchett). My dad is David Matchett who is Iris's brother. I remember Iris telling me that 'Lucy' was doing some research into the William Henry Matchett family tree, but I wasn't really sure who you were. Iris has given me some info over the phone (I live in England) but if you had any info you could share with me I would be extremely grateful! I saw in an early post that you said you had a copy of William and Elizabeth's marriage certificate, I would love to see that if possible. I can remember coming over to Belfast in the mid 80s and having tea at Lily and Sammy's house, they were lovely people. Hope you can help (are we cousins so many times removed?!)
Thanks for replying! My email address that I'm registered under is also an old one so I think I missed a previous post too? Apologies... Anyway we're in touch now so all's well that ends well I guess!
We are definitely related, if you send me your email address I can forward the info we have...
I live just outside Belfast so my dad and I can help out with investigations at this end. Funnily enough I was contacted recently by another Matchett descendent who lives in Lisburn, his granny was Florence Victoria Matchett. If I have this right I think you, my dad and him would be second cousins!
I haven't heard of the Taylor's Hill theory, that's interesting!
Re William Henry, we have a copy of his and Elizabeth's marriage certificate (I can email you a copy) which gives his father as Moses Matchett but we can't find much more on Moses, we have 3 possible marriages for him so need to investigate further... (who knew Moses Matchett was such a common name?!)
I am looking for the parents/relatives of Daniel Matchett, my great-great grandfather, born in 1858 in Ontario, Canada. He married Helen Clark, born in 1863 also of Ont. Canada. They had a daughter, Helen E Matchett, born 1890 in Ontario, who married Henry Osborn Dean in Seattle, Washington in 1910.
Not much has been known of Daniel Matchett, nor of Helen Clark. Helen E Matchett(Dean), also has information missing. All is known about her is that she died at a young age from goiter and is buried in Tacoma, Washington.

Hello,
I am also a descendant of these Matchetts. I am the great granddaughter of Agnes of 28 Nth Ann St. She then became a Hagans through marriage and had 7 children. It's taken me ages to find this out as my Dad never spoke of his family. His mother died at 34 so he was then brought up by his Granny (Agnes). Do you know of any connection to the Matchetts Music Shop in Belfast? I was told there was one. I'm still living in Belfast.
M

My goodness, I had completely forgotten that I posted here. I don't have any info further back than Agnes but there are at least 3 of her children still alive and my Dad, who is her Grandson. 3 of the children lived in Cregagh estate together and never married. Nessie died a few years back and May and Harry are still there. I know there is at least one brother in Canada still living.
I would love some more info about the Hagans side as I am not close to them and my Dad never talks about his life as a boy. He grew up with Agnes, after his Mum died. I believe he was more like a son to her than a Grandson I think she had to get legal custody of him as his father, wasn't coping with him. He's an only child and not very communicative so not much to go on.

I have some info regarding Benjamin Matchett b: 1825 in Rockbridge Co., VA. I am a Find-A-Grave volunteer and found this man's headstone in the Santa Barbara County Hospital Cemetery. This cemetery was in use from 1892-1904 and holds the bodies of those who died at the hospital and were never claimed. His headstone can be seen at http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=11... .

Karl G. Matchett - 1924-2013 Ohio

JACKSON: Karl G. Matchett, 89, of Jackson, Ohio died Monday, April 8, 2013, at Holzer Medical Center in Gallipolis, Ohio. (Gallia County)

Born in Muskingum County, Ohio, on March 13, 1924, Karl was the son of the late Curtis and Effie Williams Matchett.
He was a 1942 graduate of Otsego High School.

He was preceded in death in 2008 by his wife of nearly 60 years, Coshocton, Ohio native Marian L. Turner Matchett; also preceding him in death were brothers, Russell, Everett and Jared of West Lafayette, Ohio and Robert of New Concord, OH; sisters, Gertrude Swingle and Doris Lewis of Zanesville, Ohio and sister, Mary Welker of New Concord.

He is survived by son, Tim Matchett of Jackson, Ohio; brother, Donald of near Otsego; and several nieces and nephews.

After living in Coshocton 11 years, the Matchetts moved to Bucyrus for one year and then to Jackson in 1960. They then lived in Jackson for 34 years where Karl was manager of the Cussins & Fearn store and then owned and operated a retail floor covering business. They moved to Florida in 1994. Karl had recently returned to Ohio, where he resided among friends at Holzer Assisted Living, Jackson.

Karl served in the Navy during World War II as a signalman aboard the LSMR 197 in the South Pacific. He was an avid shuffleboard player, having achieved association pro status and participated in many tournaments throughout Florida and Ohio during summers.

Calling hours beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 12, at the Given-Dawson Funeral Home, Coshocton, will precede a service there at 1:00 p.m. by Karl's great-nephew, Reverend Michael L. Denman.
Karl's interment will be next to his wife at Prairie Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery near Coshocton.
The Coshocton County Veteran's Council will perform graveside military rites.
A brief reception will follow at the nearby Roscoe United Methodist Church.

A Jackson-area memorial service is being planned for the near future at the Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Karl would have appreciated memorial contributions in lieu of flowers made to the Adamsville Baptist Cemetery Endowment Fund in care of Brenda Fox, 7390 Adamsville Road, Adamsville, OH 43802.

Published in the Times Recorder on April 10, 2013

Just like Corporation buses, you wait ages for one then suddenly four arrive at the same time! I replied to a message after several months delay, not expecting a response much less two within hours.
Thank you for the offer of further info, I would be hugely delighted to see a copy of William Henry and Elizabeth Martin's marriage cert. My uncle, one of seven of Robert James children will be thrilled to bits, he is helping me with family info from his contacts. One of our problems is that everybody seemed to be called William Henry there being two in the same North Anne street address at the same time. Suddenly we find that there are descendants of four of William Henry and Elizabeth's children through Robert James (me)William Henry (you)Agnes and Florence-how many more are there? They had something like 11 children.
You can contact me through jake_matchett@hotmail.co.uk and I will reply through my personal address.
Hello,
Sorry its taken such a long time to reply, our account had lapsed and the e-mail notification address was an old one we rarely check.
Agnes Matchett b.1893 to William Henry Matchett and Elizabeth Martin , married William Hagans in 1915 was my Great Aunt, so I guess we are related! I don't, however know much about the Hagans branch. My Grandfather was Robert James b.1882 Agnes' older brother, one amongst many children that William Henry and Elizabeth had ( around 11 at the last count) I have not been able to trace the origins of William Henry. The 1900 Census records the note that he came from Portadown, but I have not been able to find any records that relate to him. Family 'oral' history mentions Portadown, in particular Taylor's Hill ( one of the sons is has a middle name of Taylor and this is given as an origin) Elizabeth's father was William Martin b.abt 1839 but I don't know where. My father was named after him. As to Matchett's Music Shop, I really don't know if there is a connection, bear in mind that Matchett is a very common name in Ulster, around 150 of them signed the Ulster Covenant in 1912 alone! The problem is that the Census records in Ulster, prior to 1900 were destroyed after the data were processed, and a lot of other records were burned in a fire in 1922.
If you manage to find any more information please post it up, I live in southern France and only have internet resources to work with_ I have promised myself that I will go to Ulster to do some family history searches there.
Regards,
J
Hi, I kknow its a long shot but I'll try anyway. It would seem that we are related, I am a Matchett descended from William Henry Matchett-he of 28 North Anne Street Belfast through his son Robert James. Though the 1911 Census lists William Henry as born in Belfast, he also appears on the 1901 Census living at Nelson Street Belfast. His birthplace is given as Armagh. He married Elizabeth Martin. Both of the seem to have been born about 1862 ish but I don't know where nor do I know when or where they were married, I can't find any records anywhere, have you made any progress?
Regards
Jake Matchett

David was VERY interested in our family history and I would have loved to share all this info with him, sadly that can't happen now.
I would love to have the information,if possible, on births, deaths and marriages of my Matchett Line who went to Australia - my email address is emilycartmill@hotmail.com. The names of my Matchett Line who went to Australia were Ellen b1834, William b1837, Mary Ann b1842 and Sarah b1844. I see William, Mary Ann and Sarah on your tree but Ellen is proving quite elusive! Hope you can help.
Thanking you in anticipation,
Kind regards, Emily

Hi cathcart1802
I have only just started researching The Ballinary Matchetts(spelt Ballynarry in days gone by) and have read your posts online. I am Emily Matchett now Cartmill and originally from The Birches. I now live roughly 5 miles from my birthplace and I attended St Andrews Parish Church Milltown. My Father was Samuel John Matchett b1906 d1987 married to Mary Evelyn Forde b1911 d1988.

Grandfather was William M b1863 d? married firstly to Elizabeth Trouton in 1893 sadly Elizabeth died in childbirth - 1 child, secondly to Mary Jane Frizzell in 1900 and they had 11 children 10 survived. GGrandfather was Richard b1835 d1904 married to Elizabeth Ann Martin on 10 June 1862 and had 7 children.

The only other info I have is GGGrandparents were William Matchett and Mary Jane Jackson and they had 8 children 4 of whom went to Australia. Sarah went to Australia as well as youngest son William who married Elizabeth Bertha Fuller on 14 July 1869 in Sydney. Ellen b1834 and Mary Ann b1842 also went. If you have any info on GGgrandparents William and Mary Jane I would be delighted to hear it if you dont mind and if possible even Matchett ancestors before them. I have other info on other Matchett Families from areas near The Birches.

Kind regards, Emily
Hi I'm in the UK and I am currently researching the Matchett family tree I know that some of my ancestors did go over to the US and Canada. From information I have there is a John Matchett in my 'tree' but his d.o.b. is slightly out as I have 8th August 1737, and I know that they originated from Co Cavan in Ireland and he was one of 9 siblings to a John Matchett b.1710 and died 1789 and his wife Susanna Moore also born 1710. Do you have any further info re Parents/siblings etc as I feel they could be connected? Thanks
