Hello Cousins,
My name is James Masterman Johnson, Jr.
Uintah Masterman Johnson was my paternal Grandmother.
Her father was Albert Fowler Masterman (birth name Byron Delos Masterman).
A.F. Masterman was the youngest of seven children of Matthew Masterman and Mary Runyon Masterman and was born in a covered wagon in 1857 en route from PA to Wisconsin. Matthew was from Lincolnshire England as well as his father Henry Masterman both eventually landed in Penn Yan, NY. Mary Runyon was from Germany and was the daughter of Milo Runyon. Mary passed away circa 1859 and the result was Matthew moving on to Salem, Indiana where he ran a drug business. Matthew passed away in 1878 in Salem to the best of my knowledge. A.F. was left to be raised by his older sister Mary Masterman Ranyard in Wisconsin until he was 15 or so. This info was passed on to us by my Great Aunt Zella Masterman.
So, Henry Masterman was my Great Great Great Grandfather from Lincolnshire.
Warm regards, Jim

I too have a Masterman of Dorset connection, however, it is a bit further back; Elizabeth Masterman (1683 to 1741) who married William Taunton. She is probably the daughter of William Masterman of Winterborne Whitechurch, Dorset.

I was also looking to see if there was a connection to Nanny Masterman, mother of Thomas Masterman Hardy of HMS Victory fame. Nothing so far.

Hi Helen, this sounds like my grandfathers first family in England. He (Oscar Philipe Schmit) was married to a girl named Masterman and they changed the name then to Masterman Smith around the turn of the century. My mother says they had three boys and a girl, apparently the daughter died in the 1918 flu epidemic while the boys went to Canada and Australia. My mother is his youngest daughter of his marriage to Ethel May Mann

Hello Sam,
Oscar Philipe Masterman Smith was my grandfather. He taught at Tamworth and Cheltenham during the war years, previously he had the Masterman Smith School of English at Number 5 Buckingham Palace Gardens (now Buckingham Palace Road) The accent would have been French as he was from Alsace Lorraine. His original surname was Schmit which he changed when he married (Masterman) and anglicised Schmit. My mother says he was very popular with the students as he was witty and gentle, I hope you found him so. He was born in 1870, in a cellar during the Franco Prussian war. He died in 1950 aged 80
Kind Regards Sam, Joanna

My grandfather was Oscar Philip Masterman Smith, born in 1870 in Alsace Lorraine. His name at birth was Schmit, although he was French he and his parents had to change his nationality to German as Alsace was annexed by the Germany the following year. He married in England and had a family, I believe 3 sons and a daughter (who passed away in the Spanish flu epidemic). I do have a few of his papers but there are great gaps in our knowledge too, my mother is Patricia Shaw (nee Masterman Smith), his youngest daughter, from his second marriage I guess if we are of the same family you would be my half great nephew?
joannashaw@xtra.co.nz

Hi Sally

I don't have any idea as to Matthew's father's name. Matthew and Mary (Runyan) name their first child William Henry Masterman b. 10Jan 1840 in Milo Centre, Yates co. NY. I have not explored this as I have been busy with my other lines but... either William or Henry might be a good guess. Also somewhere in my searches back in 1996, an elderly relative mentioned a possible tie in to a "Levan" Belgium, not England.
My great grandmother Ellen Augusta Masterman Calkins wrote a diary and mentioned places like Watkins Glen NY as a place She missed as my family moved via covered wagon to Oregon Territory in 1879 then finally settling in Colorado. There may have been Runyan on or Masterman relatives there. Does Watkins Glen have any meaning to you? Canda

Hello - Oscar was my great grandfather. I believe Oscar's name changed (unofficially?) about the time my grandfather Edmund's birth was registered. He was Oscar Philip Schmitt (spelling?), acquired Masterman from his wife and anglicised Schmitt. This was probably done so as not to appear "foreign". The Masterman family I believe were from near Edinburgh. He has always been a bit of a mystery to us!
Thanks for the response but I am rather confused regarding the double barrelled name. I have the 1881 census but cannot find any person with that dual name but there are 200 or so Mastermans. I should reckon that my teacher was possibly 65ish in 1947 . He was only with us for possibly a year and I know-nothing more about him. The reason I was pursuing him is because there is a school reunion shortly and I will be saying a few words and he was one of the characters I will talk about

Just to lighten the talk I will be mentioning one particular lady teacher who used to squat on the chair always showing her bloomers... Anyway I am trying to get a pair just to brighten things up. I called at every charity shop in the area and lingerie shops in the hope I could get a pair but without success so it seems that I will have to get a friend to make a pair.!!!!!

No wonder my wife says I am 81 going on 18 but it is all good fun.!!!!!!!

Hello. You seem to be doing very well if this is your first efforts with a computer!!
I am pretty sure that Masterman is basically an English name. As I mentioned - my husband traced his ancestors back to Yorkshire - where there seem to be quite a few. There are also some based in Poole in Dorset and Goole (not sure where in England this is). I believe some of my husbands ancestors moved to London in the early 1800's but I don't know if any of this is helpful to you to trace the school teacher.

Hi Peter, thanks for your post. I have just recently started researching MASTERMAN's in Dorset.

So far I have found that Shapwick, Morden, Spetisbury, Christchurch & Winterborne Whitechurch seem to be the main parishes where they lived. Also Tarrant Monkton & Winterborne Stickland/Clenston some time later. The Thomas & Mary of Shapwick interest me and I would like to find out if he came originally from another parish. My own connection is also a Thomas MASTERMAN who married Sarah MITCHELL in Christchurch (her surname was spelt Mitchehell.)

However their 7 children were baptized in Sturminster Marshall. Only 3 or 4 survived, John born 1798, Joseph b.1805, Anne b. 1807 (my 3xGG) & Thomas b. Nov 1810 (after his father's death in Feb 1810. He never married.)

I have not found out yet who Thomas's Father was, I guess he was born circa 1770. Possibly from Christchurch. Or another son of Thomas & Mary of Shapwick?

I would appreciate any info from anyone who may know.

I have been going through my husbands family tree, and his great grandmother was Sarah Jane Masterman b: 5.12.1847, Patrington, her father was Robert Masterman and her mother was Hannah Mason, and on the 1871 Census she was aged 22 where your ancestor James was living with them at the time, Sarah Jane Mastermand married William Henry Smith about 1875 at Patrington. I don't know anything further at the moment, but my husbands cousin (Alan Smith) has done a lot with the family tree, while I have been concentrating on my own tree, and I have not got my husbands entered into Ancestry yet. I will let you know if I find anthing further out. my e mail address is bsmith3@bsmith3.karoo.co.uk (I also have a son called Daren Smith (I used only one r for his name).

Please write to me as I would love to hear from you.

Regards

Brenda Smith

Hi Jacqui

I know it is 10 years since your post on this site - I have forgotten my post until I decided to google my father in law to see what came up! Have you come across a George Joseph Masterman in your research in the last 10 years? I am looking for my husbands father and grandfather, both George Joseph. My husbands father was fostered when he was a baby so lost touch with the family but there were younger siblings as his parents came back for him but he decided to stay with his foster family.

Hello. I'm trying to trace back the Masterman family from Yakima, Washington. I can only go back as far as Henry Masterman (born in England, and married to Susan Pyke), but no further.

I know that Neil P. Masterman was born and died in Yakima, Washington at age 39. His father (George Masterman) was born in Iowa and married to Mary J (unknown surname). And George's father was Henry Masterman (born in England). That's as far as I seem able to accurately trace this family.

I would also love to see pictures of George and Henry (as well as any other family members). This is my dad's family and we know very little about them.

Thanks,
Sherryl

James Masterman (Born 1866 in Welwick)

hi,
i'm trying to trace James Masterman's parents born in 1866. I don't seem to be able to find his birth record, I was going to order a birth certificate.

I know he was born in 1866 - Welwick - and lived with other Mastermans in the Patrington and Welwick area.

James went on to marry Mary Jane Ibbertson - and they gave birth to my Great nanna - Sarah Jane Masterman in 1901.

I found a census where James was livin with his grandfather Robert Masterman aged 5 in 1871 as well as with some of his auties and uncles. I'm guessing one of these must have been James's mother or father, but i can not find which.

If anybody could help, this would be great.

Hi Brenda,

Many thanks for your message. I have forwarded this as an e-mail also, just incise you do not check back on here regularly?

Well, since February, we have found out much more. the research that we did was as a 70th birthday present for my granddad (Raymond Spink) who's mother was Sarah Jane Masterman (born 1901) - granddaughter of Sarah Jane Masterman (born 1847)

James Masterman was actually known as James Smith on his birth certificate - with father unknown. James Smith's mother was Sarah Jane Masterman (1847). It looks like she fell pregnant at 15 or 16 years old.
On the actual register - they registered James as - James Smith Masterman. Over the coming years the name smith was dropped, and he kept his mother’s maiden name of Masterman.

It fascinated me to find out that Sarah Jane went on to marry a Smith, and it makes me wander - is this James's father?

I have written a story covering the Masterman family - and found out much more detail, but was quite disappointed when I found out no known father was recorded for James. I knew that the mother must have known that the father was a Smith to have registered him as a Smith, but I guessed that maybe because they were very young or him being considerably older than her? or because it was looked down on because they were not in wedlock? that she did not put the name on the birth certificate.

The story so far....

The Masterman story begins on the north bank of the River Humber in a place called Patrington. Patrington and Welwick are small villages between spurn point and Hull. It was in Patrington on the 9th September 1810 that Robert Masterman was born.

By 1841, Robert Masterman (30) had married Hannah Mason (25) and they both lived in Welwick with their children: Elizabeth(4), Mary(2) and Harriett(1). Census records suggest that they lived in Plough Cottage. Robert Masterman worked as an Agricultural Labourer, as farming was the main trade of this area. Sadly, it was in this same year that Elizabeth passed away aged nearly five at the time.

On the 5th December 1847, Hannah gave birth to Sarah Jane Masterman, her sixth child. Sarah Jane Masterman would grow up to have a Granddaughter also called Sarah Jane Masterman several years later.

A few years later in 1851, the family had moved to the nearby village of Patrington, which was slightly larger in size that Welwick. They lived in a house on the Market Place and Robert Masterman still worked as an Agricultural labourer and his wife Hannah also worked. A further four children had been born over the ten years – John, Robert, Sarah and Betsey. Betsey being the youngest at just 8 months old.

In 1861, Robert and Hannah had moved to Northside, Patrington (just around the corner from The Market Place). It was in the year, aged 13 that Sarah Jane Masterman had started earning a living. Sarah Jane Masterman was working and living as a servant at the Hildyard Inn, Market Place, Patrington. William Wood was the innkeeper and lived at the pub with his wife and his cousins family. The Hildyard Inn still exists today as the Hildyard Arms.

Robert and Hannah had in total eleven children. The last child – George Masterman being born in 1862.

Around October of 1864, Sarah Jane Masterman fell pregnant aged 16. On the 14th July 1865 Sarah Jane Masterman gave birth to a baby boy in Welwick. The boy was named as James Smith. James Smith’s birth was registered several weeks later, but once this was added to birth indexes James’s name had been changed to James Smith Masterman. As time went by, his middle name Smith would eventually disappear.

In 1871 Robert Masterman aged 61 was head of the house, his wife Hannah has passed away, and the children still living with him were Sarah Jane(22) and George(9), along with Sarah’s son James(5) and another Granddaughter Elizabeth (11) . The family were now living in Welwick, and Robert still worked as an Agricultural Labourer. Many of the family members had also followed in this trade – as did James when he grew up.

It was not known what had happened to Sarah Jane Masterman after this point, but by 1881 James’s travels had taken him to Goole. James was 16 this year, and it was in Goole that he continued working as an agricultural labourer and lived and worked on Field House farm. At the time, the small docks in Old Goole where surrounded by just a few main streets. One of these streets being Couper Street.

At this time in 1881, William and Elizabeth Ibbetson where living with their children George William, Herbert and Mary Jane down Couper Street. Mary Jane Ibbetson was ten years old, and was born near to Goole in a small village called Airmyn. Mary Jane’s father William was a dock labourer at the growing docks in Goole.

Over the coming years James and Mary Jane would meet and get engaged.

On September 17th 1890 James – 25 and Mary Jane - 20 got married at The Parish Church of Goole. At the time of marriage, James was still living at Field House farm, and Mary Jane was still living with her family down Couper Street. Witnesses at the wedding included Susannah Coult and George Burnham.

By the time the census was taken in 1891, James Masterman and Mary Jane Masterman were living at 26 Couper Street. Their first child – Sarah Elizabeth Masterman (named after both James’s and Mary’s mothers) was born in September 1890. Sarah Elizabeth died a year later.

James and Mary Jane lived down the same street as Mary’s mother Elizabeth, who now 49 years old, lived with her son Herbert – taking up residence at 13 Couper Street.

In total James and Mary Jane had twelve or thirteen children, with a known four that died at a young age.

Sarah Jane Masterman was born on the 12th February 1901 in Goole. Sarah Jane was named after James’s mother Sarah Jane, and was James and Mary’s 8th child. By 1901, James and Mary along with their children had moved into 13 Couper Street with Mary’s mother Elizabeth lodging with them.

By 1911, James was working as a Water goods proctor on the docks railway, still in residence at 13 Couper Street. Sarah Jane Masterman was 10 years old at the time.

Over the following years John Harold Spink was to meet the Masterman family and by 1920 John Harold would be living with the Masterman family down Couper Street at number 13. This would be the first place of residence for the newly wed’s Sarah Jane Masterman and John Harold Spink

This is all very fascinating, many thanks again for your message. Where abouts have the movement of ancestors left you today? We haven’t actually travelled very far. James moved on to Goole from Patrington, and then James’s daughter (my granddads mother) moved to Grimsby where my granddad, mother and myself where born. I spent a few years living over in Hull, but I am back settled in Grimsby now as a teacher at a local 6th form college.

look forward to speaking to you further,

regards,

Darren.
Hi

My daughter descends from Frederick Masterman born 1878, he died in the first world war. He was her Great Grandfather. His father was George Masterman and his father was Moses born 1814 who as you say was a Shepherd and they lived in Morden. His father was James who married an Ann Ford from Spetisbury her mother was Tabitha Ford. They married in Silton Dorset 1800. I have got further back on the Pike (Moses wifes side ) as well. I take it you are a descendent of Ernest, Fredericks brother??? Or you may be a descendent of the Moses that was Georges brother? I know he had a son called Ernest too. Either way I think you are a distant relation of my daughter.

If you are, do you know what happened to George I cannot find him after the 1881 Census. Do you know why Harry Masterman (another of Georges sons) changed his name to Taylor as well??

We still live in the Dorset area too (Corfe Mullen)

I can send you the info I have via e mail if you are interested as I havn't got the tree on ancestry yet.

Best wishes

Elise Masterman

Hi
just to confirm a few details.
Harry Taylor [masterman] was my grandfather although i never met him as he died the same week i was born in 1948.
My father Henry William Masterman Taylor never spoke about his father and until i started the family history i never questioned why he had Masterman in his name. I can only surmise that harry wanted to continue the name but i have no idea why he changed his name and i dont know how to find out.Harry and his wife Annie lived in Reading Berkshire at the time of their deaths. I have quite a bit of army documents relating to harry and lots from my father who was a prisoner of war for 5 years in WW2. My father served in the Royal Berks regiment as did harry.
Thanks for the family history it was great, if i do come up with anything else relevant i will mail you
jane

I can't find any information on Annie Masterman that married John Henry Wright in Feb 1885. They were married in Sculcoates, Yorkshire and it states her age is 20 years old.

Her father was Robert Masterman and it says on the marriage certificate he is deceased.

I have tried to look on the censuses but can't find them.

I would appreciate any information.

Thanks.

Masterman's from Patrington.

My Great Great Grandmother is a "Masterman" from patrington.

On her marriage certificate it states "Robert Masterman", as her father, however I think he was probably her grandfather, as on her birth certificate it has no father listed and her mother is Mary Masterman of Patrington. (Assuming I have the correct Birth Certificate).

I see alot of Family Tree's on Ancestry for the Masterman's from Patrington. I am sure she must belong to them, but she isn't listed. Any ideas?

Thanks.

My Husband is Mason John Masterman (III) His great grandfather was the second son of Thomas and Hannah.
My husbands parents were not married although his fathers name is on his birth certificate and that is how we traced back to Thomas. The name Mason comes from Hannahs father Mason Verity of Bales House.

Hi Paul,

its not my husband you are related to, its me. My grandmother is Sylvia Masterman (she became Green after marrying my grandfather Douglas Green) she is the daughter of Fred Masterman, ie your aunty. Do you know an aunty Silvia? I am Fred Masterman's great granddaughter, while it looks like you are his grandson, does that make us second cousins or something?

Anyway good to hear my tree has been of use to you, and its nice to hear about your branch of it.

Donna
