Massengales in Shelby, Alabama late 1700s early 1800s

I'm trying to find a connection between the Massengale family (possibly Solomon, Albert, John Cobb) and Rogers families in Shelby/Talladega, AL. Specifically, I am looking for a connection to Eleanor Keys Rogers, b. 1812, m. Benjamin Heaslet in 1835, d. 1847 in Talladega. One of her children has the middle name Massengale.

Millicent Massengale was my 4th Great-grandmother. She married Benjamin Gray. I have her birth as about 1760 and her death in 1853. Her father was Daniel Massengale but I have no other information on him.

Can anyone help me out? There is an Jean Ann Massengale on the Texas Probate records for 1992. I cannot open the record right now because I am not renewing my subscription until I get my computer back next month. I am wondering who this might be for. My best friend's name is Jean Ann Massengale. She is alive and kicking, but her insurance called her grandson today and wanted to know why he had not reported she had died. We are wondering where they got the information that she had died and the insurance office is not open until tomorrow. We know we will find out tomorrow, but are curious if this might be what the insurance is referring to.

Here are some brief updates to this thread, which I just came across. I am John, Rik Massengale and Cindy Thompson's son. Rik and his brother Don (mentioned previously) both played on the PGA tour for many years, so more can be found on them. They are Jesse Charles and Mildred sons. Rik and Cindy are in the Dallas area and are up to 12 grandchildren at this point in 2014. My family is currently in Kansas City but we have lived around the US a bit. I have 3 children, but don't feel the need to go into details right now.

Marcengil, Massengale, etc of Rabun Co Ga and Swain Co NC

My wife is descended from Finny M. Marcengil (various spellings). He was probably born in Pickens Co SC about 1844. In 1850 he is listed with Esther, 86 yrs (maiden name Blackman,widow of Ethelred or Dread), Mourning, 35 and Finny, age 5. Mourning is his mother (per later census records). 1860 lists only Finny and Mourning, still in Rabun Ga. In 1870 the two are living with the C.H. Shepherd family in Alarka, Macon (later Swain) Co. NC. 1880 lists Finny and his wife Dianna, John and Mourning (mother, widowed). After 1880 they are back in Rabun Co. GA. He was Civil War veteran and died in 1944, Rabun Co Ga.

My questions: what was MOURNING's last name, who was Finny's father, what was Finny's middle name (initial "M.") A grandson named Finous Malay Marcengil is buried in SC. Dread and Esther had lived near a Malloy family in Pickens Co SC. Is the "M" for Malloy?

I am looking for any information about Dempsey Massengill/Massengale. My G-Grandpa was James Calvin Massengill. His parents were Thomas L. Masiongale and Nancy Jane Bond.

I have read that there could possibly be a Matthew William Massengill(forgive the misspelling) as Dempsey's father. I have also read that Dempsey is the nickname and his real name is Matthew. Can anyone clarify?

I have very little on Wm. A Massengale. Am trying to find more. I know he was born about 1830 in Alabama. Heard that he was full blooded Cherokee and lost his land and that's when he moved to Texas. Don't know if what I heard is correct- haven't found a way to confirm it. Please let me know if you have any info on him. Thank you!

The children were born in northern Missouri (Nodway County) or southwest Nebraska--Hayes and Lincoln Counties..I think!
I found Matt and eldest son George in Hayes County NE 1910.

David R. Massengale (age 43) - 1870 Scott Co., TN Census

I need information about the David R. Massingale who appears in the 1870 Scott Co., TN census. His age at that time was 43. His wife was Sarah. Children were John (16), Dempsey (14), Emily (12), Louisa (10), Mary E. (6), Martha (4) and Theodosia (2).

I have many questions. Did David's son John marry Mary Low in 1878? Did David's daughter Louisa become the second wife of Julian Reed and live with him in Whitley Co., KY? Did David have an older brother, John O. Massengale who married Mary Duncan? Who were David's parents?

I believe I am closing in on my correct Massengale line but still have many loose ends. Any help with this particular family would most helpful!

Is anyone familiar with John Massengale and his wife Mary Lowe? I don't have birthdates but they had a daughter named Della who was born in 1886. Della married Jake Childress. Her death certificate says she and both parents were born in Tennessee. She died in Whitley Co., KY in 1918.

Marriage Records from Campbell Co., TN show a marriage between J.L. Childress and Della Massengal on 1-15-1905. In the 1910 Campbell Co., TN census, this family seems to appear as Jake L. Childress (28), Della (23), Isham (4) and Charles Elmer (1 8/12). This may have been Della's second marriage. She must have been deceased by 1920. The 1920 Whitley Co., KY census has Jacob Childers (41), Isham (14), Charles (12), Viola (9) and John (5) living with Mat and Sallie Reed. Jacob's relationship to Mat Reed is "brother-in-law". The 1930 Harlan Co., KY census has John Childress, Nephew (16), living with Mat and Sallie Reed. I believe Della Massengal Childress/Childers was probably a sister of Sallie Reed. Sallie seems to have been a Massengill/Massengal(e), although her marriage to Mat Reed may have been her second as well. Can anyone help me sort out the relationships between these folks? And, assuming Della and Sallie were sisters, who were their parents? Thanks in advance!

My great great grandfather was William A. Massengale who married Nancy Champion. I have information on Nancy Champion's line back til the 1700's.
One of their children was Rufus John Massengale who married Lula Beatrice Caldwell. They had a lot of children, including Nuton Andrew, Benjamin F.,Fred,Ruth, Edwin Rufus, Mary (Elizabeth),Orville, and Sally.I have been searching for William A. Massengale's father and mother.Anyone have information?

My great-grandmother had a brother, Elmer Massengale, that lived in Washington state. He was NOT in the Civil War as he was born in 1901. There was also a nephew, Elmer Massengale, born in 1916.

Most of the Massengales originated in England. They were basically in the South...Virginia and North Carolina. As they moved west, they moved into Tennesse, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, and beyond. Check this board by putting names in the search. Also go to the family trees to look for names. The Massengales tended to have large families, used some names frequently, and moved en masse. This makes research confusing. Unfortunately, there are variations of the spelling of the last name, too. This makes the job tougher.

I am researching the ancestry of my 2G-grandmother, Martha Massengale. Here is what I have on her:

1) Born in Iowa, about 1852

2) In 1860, lived in Nodaway County, Missouri, with her 2 sisters, Adeline & Mercy in the household of Bowdewine Vansickle.

3) Married Stephen F. Renfro in Nodaway County, 8 Mar 1866

4) Lived with her husband Stephen Renfro and her sister, Adeline in Nodaway County in 1870

5) Lived with her husband and children in Nemaha County, Kansas in 1880

6) Died in Nemaha County, Kansas in 1887

I am trying to find who her parents were and to take it back even farther, if possible. There is a family story that she had some Native American ancestry in her background. Thanks for whatever help you can provide!

After our last message on SEPT 3, 2004, I have nothing on Goodman W T Massingale. I beleive he could be Adam and Esther son. I have a family on the census 1850 with Washington in his mid 30, mitilda early 30, goodman 23, lydia and penelope late teens Does not any elder Massingale male. Scan over your list to see if Goodman may have been to family.

The James Massengale mentioned in earlier post that died in Lexington Ky. in the riot was the husband of Lena Travis. Lena was the sister to my great grandmother. Would like to share what info I have on their family in exchange for anything you may have.

Me again. I see that your Massengale (Leroy, right?) was listed as Methodist Minister of Gospel in the 1860 Mississippi census. Also notice that he was born in Tennessee which is where my John O. Massengale was from. Again, John was listed as Methodist clergy in 1860 as well. Can't help wondering if John and Leroy were related. If so, I'd love compare notes. John is giving me fits!

Hello, curiously I am trying to track a John O. Massingale whose occupation is listed as "Methodist Clergy" in the 1860 Scott Co., TN census. I'm having a bit of trouble, though. Probably not the same person?
