Robert Floyd MASHBURN, son of A G MASHBURN and Sarah DELOZIER was murdered in Cherokee County, NC in 1913.

To the best of my memory he had something to do with law enforcement. I have a copy of his death certificate but cannot read his occupation. It also names the man who killed him but I cannot read that either. He was a BURCHFIELD and it MIGHT have been Devero.

Does anyone have the details about Robert Floyd

Re: Death info on William and Lydia 1870-1880/ Burke, NC/Arkansas

Marsha,

I’m so glad that you replied. I’m sorry it took so long to get back to you, but I wanted to get my information straight so I didn’t confuse you. It appears that there are 3 families intertwined, Mashburn, Shepherd and Crawley. In the family letter I have from William and Lydia Mashburn’s son, Anderson, to his nephew, John Mashburn, it states that his mother and father died “in 11 days” in Arkansas. It also says that “ant” Emaline and Jane also died in AR. I believe in this context that he is referring to his sisters, John’s aunts.
(1)	I believe that Wm & Lydia have a daughter Jane Mashburn that married Israel Crawley, 1837-1845. They are next door in 1860 & in 1880 Jane, without Israel, is in same dwelling as Henry Shepherd and next door to Adam Shepherd.
(2)	Wm & Lydia’s daughter Emaline married Adam F. Shepherd 1860-1868.
(3)	Adam married Louisa Crawley, Israel & Jane’s daughter, 1876 (she 1st married David Whitehead 1869 Sevier, TN).
That means that Emaline’s niece ,Louisa, married her uncle Adam, when I assume Emaline died. Crazy isn’t it. Does this make sense to you? Don’t hesitate to tell me if something doesn’t. I’ve worked on this for a long time, trying to find proof of these relationships, but most of the early records for Cocke Co. were destroyed in a court house fire. Here are the census that I have for them:

1850 Washington Co., TN:
William Marshburn, 53, NC
Lydia, 47, NC
Emaline, 12, TN
& other children.

1850 Buncombe Co., NC, p. 624, 1586/1586:
Wm Shepherd, 58, NC
Martha, 55, NC
Adam F., 19, NC

1850 I can not find Israel Crawley & Jane anywhere.
______________________________________________________________
1860 Cocke Co. TN, family #1504
William Mashburn, 63, NC
Lydia, 57, NC
Emaline, 21, NC
& other children

Next door:
Cocke Co., TN, family #1505:
Israel Crawley, 45, NC
Jane, 36, NC
Louisa, 15, NC, future wife to A.F Shep.
James, 12, TN
William, 9
Lydia, 7, TN
Mary, 3, TN
Mary, 65, NC [probably Israel’s mother]

1860 Cocke Co., TN, Newport, p. 55, 397/397:
A.F. Sheppard, 26, NC
Nelly, 25, TN
James, 5, TN
Mary J.D., 4, TN
William D., 3, TN
Martha, 4/12, TN
Martha, 85, NC
____________________________________________________________

1870 Newport, Cocke Co., TN, p. 413, family #146
William Mashburn, 70, NC
Lydia, 60, TN

Next door:
1870 Newport, Cocke Co., TN, p. 413, family #145
Adam Shepard, 37, NC
Emaline, 32, NC
James M., 15, TN [son by previous marriage]
Lewis F., 2, TN
Joseph, 1, TN

1870 Sevierville, Sevier Co., TN, ED 1, p. 337 (17):
Isral Crowley, 57, NC
Ginsa?, [possibly Louisa? May be Jane’s middle name?], 49, NC
Lidda, 15, NC
Mary, 12, NC
Emiline, 8, TN
Susa, 5, TN
William, 4, TN
Mary, 87, VA [probably Israel’s mother]
____________________________________________________________

1880 Silver Lake, Desha Co., AR:
58/60 A.F. Shepherd, 46, NC, SC, SC
Louisa, 38 wife, NC, NC, NC
Louis, 13, TN, NC, NC
Alexander, 10, TN, NC, NC

59/61 Henry Shepherd, 25, TN, NC, TN
May, 23, TN, NC, NC
Lizzie, 5/12

59/62 June (Jane) Crawley, 60, NC, NC, NC
Emma, 18, TN
Susan, 15, TN

Now to your interest, Henry. Do you know where he is in 1860-1870? I can’t find him anywhere? When did he die? With Adam’s mother being 55 in 1850, it seems unlikely they are brothers. Do you think James M. in the 1870 census can be him and the “M” should have been “H”? I can’t find James after 1870 and the age is right.

You probably already know this, but Adam was a Confederate soldier. That is all that I know about him.

I looked at a lot of Arkansas Cemetery books at the D.A.R. Library in DC for the Mashburns, Shepherds, and Crawleys and found none of them. Is it possible there is a cemetery book locally that may have done an inventory of this cemetery by the river?

Thanks, Pam
Oh my! I am so excited to have come across your post! I am a descendent of A.F. Shepherd, but never knew who his first wife was. I have found him in Silver Lake, Desha County, Arkansas working as a blacksmith with a wife named Louisa. Living beside him is a Henry Shepard (I assume his son), my ancestor. If not son then brother. If the Mashburns died in Silver Lake, they would have been buried beside the River, and that cemetery has almost entirely washed away due to erosion. I plan on trying to look around this winter, as snakes are too bad right now. I can give you a quick run down on Louis Fields Shepherd (how the spelling changed). Louis married Ida L. Dunaway and had 6 children: Emmeline b Feb 1897, William Henry b 4 May 1903, Robert b 1906, Nora O'Neil Shepherd b 20 Nov 1908, Callie M. b Feb 1910, and Adam W. b 1919.

Emmeline (called Emma) married Jack B. Satterly on 31 Mar 1918 in Arkansas County, Arkansas. She had 1 child, Louis D. Satterly. After her Father was widowed (know this from 1920 Census for Chester Township..now Tichnor, Arkansas) her Father and siblings lived with her and her family.

William Henry Shepherd married Carrie Mae Ashmmore on 18 Jun 1923 in Rosedale, Mississippi. They had 4 children: William Henry Shepherd b 1924 stillborn; Thomas Fields Shepherd b 4 Feb 1925 in Clarendon, AR; Annie Lou Shepherd b 31 Oct 1927 in Mississippi; Betty Jean Shepherd b 4 Aug 1930.

Thomas Fields Shepherd married Marguerite Cecile Richard on 1 Sep 1951. they had 4 sons: Richard Thomas b 27 Apr 1952, William Henry b 2 Oct 1953, Randal Walton b 9 aug 1957, and Robert Craig b 20 May 1964.

Annie Lou Shepherd married Jimmy Brewer and had 2 daughters: Betty Lynn Brewer b 11 Jun 1952 and Patricia Jean Brewer b 27 May 1954.

Betty Jean Shepherd married Alexander Keller, but had no children.

I can continue down to the next line as well if you would like additional information. I have contacted this family descendent and I am working with him to get all of their information. Again, I am so excited and glad that I came across your post. I would love any information that you would have on A.F. Shepherd or his family previous to the Census that I have found.

I look forward to working with you.

Marsha Sullivan

I just found your post and have some information for you.
On Sankie Mashburn's death certificate, her parents are listed as Manley Dowd and Anne Williams. I have access to the U.S. Census and have found the following:
1880 Census, Gulf Twp., Chatham Co., N.C.
Manley Dowd age 33 (b. abt. 1847)
Ann Dowd age 34 (b. abt. 1846)
John Dowd age 14 (b. abt. 1866)
Thomas Dowd age 12 (b. abt. 1868)
Mollie Dowd age 10 (b, abt, 1870)
*Sallie Dowd age 8 (b. abt. 1872)
Lulla Dowd age 3 (b. abt. 1877)
Manley Dowd age 6 mos. (b. abt 1879)
*I think Sallie is Sank, perhaps Sank is a nickname.

I couldn't find Manley Dowd in the 1870 and 1860 Census.

1850 Census, Upper Regiment, Chatham Co., N.C.
Samuel A. Dowd age 23 (b. abt.1827)
Ann S. Dowd age 22 (b. abt. 1828)
Charles Manley Dowd age 3 (b. abt. 1847)(Sank's father)
John A. Dowd age 1 (b. abt. 1846)

Besides the Marlboro, S.C. Census, this is the only other one I have found.
1930 Census, Gulf Twp., Chatham Co., N.C.
Milton Mashburn age 62
Sank Mashburn age 52
Louise Ray age 13, grand daughter
Paul Oldham age 5, grandson
Louise Ray is the dau., of Ernest M. and Myrtle "Murtie" Mashburn Ray.
Paul Oldham is the son of Daniel P. and Elizabeth Mae Mashburn Oldham.
Louise's parents died when she was an infant.
Paul's father died in 1928, but I don't have Elizabeth's death date. If you have it, I would love for you to inform me. I have been researching the Mashburn's for years, I hope I have helped you!
Jean

Mashburn Family

My Great- Grandmother, Emma Mashburn, was the daughter of Cabel (?) and Margrett (Goodal) Mashburn. While going through some old pictures I came across a picture of this woman (picture is included)who I believe maybe be a Mashburn. I cannot say that I am 100% positive as there is no name on the back. My Great-Grandma Emma and her daughter , my grandmother, Bessie (who married John Barnes) hold a strong resemblance to this woman. When you look at this picture you will see that this woman has Native American features,I have had that confirmed by some of my friends who are of Native American ancestry. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just happened to run across this, but the people you are referring to, are my family. Louise Ray Heaton, is my great grandmother. She passed away in 2008. Her mom, Myrtie passed away in 1916, leaving my "mamaw" Lizzie (She never liked Lizzie, so she changed it herself to Elizabeth) Mae Mashburn Story to raise her. Well, long story short, she ended up raising Louise, then my grandfather Bobby Heaton (Louise' and George Heaton's son), my Mom, Terry Heaton Bowman, And ultimately had a hand in raising my sisters and I before she passed away in 1999. I'm not sure how far I can go back, but if I can't, my mom could. Oh, and BTW, Sallie is Sank's sister, from what I understand. Look forward to hearing from you!

Judy,
Alcy Webster was my great great grandmother.........Her parents, as I understand, were Myra and Jonathan Webster. We are trying to find additional information and link her to the Dawes roll. We believe she is listed on the roll, but are having difficult proving she is the Alcy Webster listed on the roll. It is my understanding that she was 3/4 Cherokee. Do you have any information that Myra and Jonathan were CHerokee. Any information you might have would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Jerri Drain

His father, James B. Mashburn was of Scotch Presbyterian parentage and his mother, Nancy Evander, or Quaker Dutch (Holland) family. She died while John E. was a boy.
James Mashburn later married a widow Godfrey who had one son. My father, John E. Mashburn, while a young man, slowly traveled north working in mines, going to school, sometimes in winter and later he worked at carpentry and teaching school.
Sometime in the middle 40’s he married Miss Jane Plunkett in Mississippi or Louisiana. Three children were born of this marriage. Two children died, and later the mother. Several years later father married a Widow Evans 10 years younger than himself.
