Pelos vistos sou o primeiro Martins a responder de Portugal!!

Pelo que sei, Martins (a par de outros nomes portugueses acabados em "s") significa filho de Martim. Por sua vez, Martim tem origem Latina (provavelmente proto-romana) e significa, grosseiramente, "Guerreiro" e "Nobre". Há quem estableça a ligaçao com o Deus Romana da guerra, Marte. Contudo, as névoas do tempo olvidaram mais dados acerca deste nome. Observem, também, a freguesia de Algueirão-Mem Martins. O nome Martins, segundo o arqueólogo Rui Oliveira, provavelmente origina do nome do cavaleiro medieval que morou nesta região e que chamava-se Martim Escorso. Consequentemente, o nome poderá também provir do apelido dos filhos deste cavaleiro que também viveram nesta região e que se chamavam "Martins".
