I am also doing research on the Mars family.

I believe that Henry M. Mars married Earthly Mars. They had a son unknown and he married Margaret. I think that the unknown son and Margaret had a son named Uriah Mars and Catherine (Mars) Corey. I think that Margaret married someone else and had a son named Anthony Moore.

Uriah Mars Married Mary (Maxwell) Mars and had two children. Amanda Mars and Silas Mars.

Later Uriah Mars married Elizabeth (Whitmore) Mars from Hamilton County, Indiana.
They lived in Hamilton County, Indiana and later moved to Bigger township, Jennings County, IN
They are buried in Monroe Cemetery, Jefferson County, IN
They had 3 children maybe more. Malinda Mae (Mars) Day, Thomas H. Mars, John Franklin Mars. Malinda Mae (Mars) Day is my great-grandmother.

I have an 1860 Census with Uriah Mars, Mary Mars, Amanda Mars, Silas Mars, and Margaret Mars.

Margaret Mars birth year is the same as Margaret Moore who lived with Henry M. Mars and Earthly Mars.

Hi my maiden name was Mars. I had an uncle Walter. My father was Billy Sunday Mars from South Carolina and then Boston. He had a brother Jules and sister Alice. Both Jules and Alice had moved to Chester, PA. The brothers had split up and we lost track after my father died back in 1971

Looking for info. on the Cornelius & Isabella Mars family. He was a Methodist preacher. They res. Seneca, Ontario Co., NY, then Lewiston, Niagara Co., NY. Two daughters that I know of: Jane Mars b. 1802 NY mar. Elijah Carman and d. 1870 in MI. Sarah Mars b. 1807 NY mar. John Beamer, d. 1862 in MI. Both daughters and their families moved to Genesee Co., MI in 1830s. Cornelius & Isabella followed and are buried there. I have Elizabeth who married Peter McGregor, supposedly maiden name was Mars, wondering if she is another daughter. She was b. ca 1800-1805 in Montgomery Co., NY, res. in York, Livingston Co., NY and Pendleton, Niagara Co., NY after marriage. Died after 1870- where?

I realize this is coming quite a long time after your original posting, but it may interest you. I was searching online for information about my family and this turned up. I'm the great granddaughter of Cornelius and Josephine Geary, who Lydia Mars worked for in Fitchburg, MA. I'm named after her, actually. My family tells me that Cornelius, who was the medical examiner for Worcester County, met Lydia when she was working in one of the mills he was inspecting. She wasn't in very good health, and he offered her a job in the family. She pretty much raised my grandmother and was very well loved by everyone in the Geary family. I have a locket with her picture that my grandmother gave me before she died.

Looking for info about the parents of Thomas H. Mars. Thomas was born in Indiana and is buried in Indiana in Dupont Cemetery. He married Jennie Jines (also buried in Dupont cemetery). They had 6 children:

That would be the same Joseph Mars. He is buried in the Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery in Kansas. The oldest son of Joseph and Clarissa was Dennis and he was my great-grandfather. I have the names of all the kids and there is a 2nd cousin that has a photo of Joseph and as soon as she can find it, I will have a copy.

Hi Laura; I was reading your response regarding Joseph Mars. My grandfather was Joseph Mars, he too came from Canada and fought in the civil war. He married an Indian woman (do not know her name) she passed away then he married my grandmother Clarissa Peltier who was a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation in Oklahoma. They had I think about 6 children. I know he is buried at the Old soldiers home in Kentucky but the story ends there. I hope to find more information about him. Was your Walter Mars one of 13 children of William L. Mars and Mary E. Cregan. The family lived off and on in Utica, NY, Oswego, NY and Buffalo, NY ?? William & Mary's daughter Theresa Ida Mars is my grandmother. I have traced the Mars family to Toulouse, France. Mars is a "dit" name from Quebec, Canada. The real family name is "Semure" They were original pioneer settlers of Quebec in the 1700's. If this is the same Walter bro. of my grandmother email through Ancestry.com, I have lots more info for.

My French great-grandmother was Marie Mars. Born circa 1885 in the Ardennes region, town would be Rocroi or nearby. It's funny to see all the references to English Mars when I thought it was just a French family name.

I am overwhelmed with what you have done for me. Thank you so much. I do have a certain amount of history regarding. Mary Anne and the family, but nowhere near the amount that you have found for me. I will be sending for some certificates that you've mentioned because they will probably enable me to find some living relatives. The Liffens/Leffins that Mary Anne married into were, I think a very sad family. Mary Annes first child a son, died terribly young, and as you know so did her husband. All our lives we had an Aunt Mary who we thought was the sister of all the other children that grandmother had. But I believe that Mary could have been taken over by grandmother. Mary was born with a hunchback. We were told that her father (John Liffen) had died of TB, and Mary was concieved during his illness , hence her tuburcular spine. I am not to sure. I can only find one Mary born at that time and it looks as tho' she was born to perhaps a brother or sister inlaw of my grandmother. And for some reason grandmother took her over. Then grandmother re-married and had all the rest of the children that I knew as aunts and uncles.So grateful to you. Merry Xmas. Madeleine.

Next I looked for Mary Ann and her family in the 1871 census. I first looked for her in the 1871 census at Ancestry.com, but didn’t find it, but then located her and her family in a census index at the Latter Day Saints (LDS) website at www.familysearch.org

Using the census index above as a guide, I finally located the Mars family in the 1871 census at Ancestry.com. I discovered the reason that I did not originally uncover the family is because the surname was indexed under the surname “Moors,” rather than Mars, by Ancestry.com.

I accessed a copy of the original census which I’ve transcribed below under the correct spelling of their surname, Mars. The census shows the family lived in 3 Woolf Street, and that Christopher is employed as a Wool Rug Dresser. The only other person in the household with an occupation is 12 year old John Mars. I could not make out his full occupation, but it had to do with hackneys, which I believe may refer to cabs.

Knowing that Christopher was married to Margaret, I began looking for their marriage record. I found a record of their church marriage banns at Ancestry.com’s “,London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921.” This record shows that Margaret’s maiden name was Crawley. The banns of marriage were announced on three consecutive Sundays in Saint Mary’s Church of England, Newington, in October and November of 1855:

I then found the civil marriage index for Christopher and Margaret, showing their marriage recorded in the Bermondsey Registration District for the December quarter of 1855. Their marriage record can be found in Volume 1d, Page 123 of the GRO registers:

The marriage record from the GRO should provide you with the names and occupations of the fathers of the groom and bride. Once you know the name of Margaret’s father, and his occupation, you can then search for her in the 1851 and 1841 census returns.

Next I looked for the birth and christening indexes or records for Christopher and Margaret’s children John, Daniel and James. I found what I believe may be the indexes for John and Daniel, but not James at the FreeBMD website.

The index for John shows his birth recorded in Bermondsey in the March quarter of 1858. His birth record can be found in Volume 1d, Page 114 of the GRO registers.

I then located two birth indexes for a Daniel Mars, one recorded in Bermondsey in the March quarter of 1862, and one in Bermondsey for the June quarter of 1863. Seeing two birth indexes for two children with the same name born around the same time and in the same place is usually a tragic sign, meaning the first-born had died. This turned out to be the case as I also found the GRO death index for the first-born Daniel, recorded in Bermondsey in the March quarter of 1862, which is the same year and quarter of his birth.

This Daniel’s birth record can be found in Volume 1d, Page 116 of the GRO registers. His death record can be found in Volume 1d, Page 59 of the GRO registers.

The birth record for the second-born Daniel Mars can be found in Volume 1d, Page 81 of the GRO registers. The four indexes follow:

I then located 44 year old tanner, Christopher “Marrs”, and 39 year old Margaret, and four of their children in the 1881 census living in an address of 29 Townsend Street, Southwark, London. Christopher is shown to have been born in Lambeth, Surrey. Margaret and the four children are also shown to have been born in Lambeth. The oldest child in the household is 14 year old Mary A. I believe this is your grandmother. Next in the household are 8 year old Edward, 4 year old Maria, and 7 month old Annie.

Next I looked for, but did not find Edward or Maria Mars in the GRO birth indexes, but did locate the birth index for an Annie Mars, which may pertain to the daughter of Christopher and Margaret. Annie’s birth was recorded in the St. Olave Registration District for the September quarter of 1880. Her birth record can be found in Volume 1d, Page 222 of the GRO registers. The full name for the registration district where her birth was recorded is St. Olave Bermondsey.

By the 1891 census Mary Ann is no longer in the household with her parents. I figured by this date she would have been married. More on this later.

The 1891 census shows that 50 year old Christopher and 42 year old Margaret Mars and three of their children were living in an address of 34 Trinity Buildings, parish of St. George the Martyr, London. Christopher’s occupation is listed as leather dresser. The census shows that he was employed. His birthplace is listed as Bermondsey, while the birth place of Margaret is shown to be St. John’s, London. The children in the household, all born in Camberwell, are 15 year old Timothy, employed as a labourer; 14 year old Maria, and 10 year old Hannah. I’m not sure where Timothy came from as he was not in the 1881 census with his parents.

I didn’t uncover a birth index for a Timothy Mars, but did locate a birth index for a Hannah Emma Mars. This may refer to Christopher and Margaret’s daughter. The index shows that Hannah Emma’s birth was recorded in the St Saviour Registration District (this is the same district noted in the 1891 census above), for the March quarter of 1880. Hannah’s birth record can be found in Volume 1d, Page 60 of the GRO registers. You would have to order her birth record from the GRO to see if her parents are Christopher and Margaret Crawley Mars:

I then found a copy of the original marriage record for Mary Mars at Ancestry.com’s “London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921.” This record shows that 19 year old Mary and 18 year old George John Leffen were married in St. Paul’s Church of England, Bermondsey, on 11 April 1887. Mary’s father is listed as Christopher Mars, whose occupation was leather dresser. George’s father is John Leffen, also employed as a leather dresser. At the time of the marriage both Mary and George were living in an address of 14 Richmond St., Bermondsey. While George signed the marriage register with his name, Mary signed the registers with her mark “X,” meaning she could not write. The witnesses to the wedding were James and Lucy Leffen:

Next I found a death index for a George John Leffen. This index may refer to Mary’s husband. The index shows his death recorded in the St. Olave district for the June quarter of 1892. At the time he died George was 22 years old. His death record can be found in Volume 1d, Page 131 of the GRO registers. His death record should provide the cause of death and the exact date and place of death:

From the marriage record we know that George John Leffen’s father was John Leffen, who was employed as a leather dresser. With this information I temporarily left the research for the Mars family and wanted to see if I could find George’s birth and baptism and record.

First the baptism, which was found at Ancestry.com. The record shows that George John Leffen was born on 27 January 1870, and baptized in the parish of St. John, Horselydown, Surrey, on January 21, 1872. His parents are listed as John George and Louisa Leffen, of Queen Street. John’s occupation is leather dresser. The curate who baptized George appears to be T.H. Tarlton. Just below George’s baptism record is the baptism record for his sister, Eliza Mary. Eliza was born on what appears to be 31 December 1871, and baptized the same day as George John, January 21, 1872.

Below is the 1870 civil birth index for George John “Liffen.” I didn’t find a birth index for Eliza Mary. The index for John shows his birth recorded in the St Olave Registration District for the March quarter of 1870. His birth record can be found in Volume 1d, Page 226 of the GRO registers:

I then found the church marriage record for 19 year old John Leffen and 19 year old Louisa, showing that Louisa’s maiden name was Kent. The couple were married in St. Paul’s Church of England, Bermondsey, on March 1, 1868.

John’s father is shown to be John Leffen, employed as a dock worker. Louisa’s father is Robert Kent. His occupation appears to be “Corn Master,” but I can’t be entirely sure of that. The address of John and Louisa at the time of marriage is listed only as Bermondsey.

I couldn’t make out the surname of the parish priest who married John and Louisa, but his first name was George.

John signed the register with his name, but Louisa used an X to sign her name. The witnesses to the marriage were

Getting back to the Mars family, I found the marriage records for two more daughters of Christopher and Margaret Mars. These are for Maria Mars, and Annie Mars.

First Maria Mars. The transcription below shows that 19 year old Maria and 20 year old William Kurz were married in St. Paul’s Church of England, Bermondsey, on 6 October 1895. William’s occupation was Printer. His father was John Kurz, a baker. At the time of the marriage William lived at 10 Russell Street, while Maria Mars lived at 29 Lansdown Place. Her father is listed as Christopher Mars, whose occupation was “Skinner.” The witnesses to the marriage appear to be Timothy Edward Mars, and Mary and Kate Kurz. Or the second witness may actually be one person by the name of Mary Ann Kate Kurz, though I can’t tell for sure from a copy of the original marriage record at Ancestry.com. The name of the clergyman who married William and Maria appears to be Samuel M. Mayhun, though I can’t be sure if I have transcribed the spelling of the clergyman’s last name accurately:

The other daughter of Christopher and Margaret Mars whose marriage record I found at Ancestry.com, was Annie. Annie Mars married William Hayes in St. John the Evangelist Church, Walworth, London, on September 18, 1907. At the time they married both William and Mary were 27 years old. William’s occupation was general dealer. His address at the time of marriage was 6 Content Street. His father was also named William Hayes. The older William Hayes was employed as a waterside labourer.

The marriage record also shows that Annie was employed, but I could only make a partial description of her occupation, which had to do with yarn. No address is given for her. The vicar who married William and Annie was Richard Jepson. The witnesses to the marriage were E. Mars and M. Baxter:

Getting back to Christopher and Margaret Mars, I found them listed under the name “Maris,” in the 1901 census living in an address of 7 Lamb Alley, Bermondsey. In a copy of the original census the name does appear to read Maris. The census lists Christopher’s age as 66 and Margaret’s age as 65. Christopher is shown to be a skin dresser of fur. His birthplace is Bermondsey, London, as is the birthplace for Margaret. No children are in the household with them:

I didn’t find Christopher or Margaret Mars in the 1911 census, but I believe I located their death indexes at the FreeBMD website.

The index for Margaret shows her death recorded in the Bermondsey district for the September quarter of 1908. At the time of death she was 78 years old. Her death record can be found in Volume 1d, Page 109 of the GRO registers.

The index for Christopher Mars shows his death recorded in Bermondsey in the September quarter of 1918. The index shows he was 86 when he died. His death record can be found in Volume 1d, Page 172 of the GRO registers.

I can’t be 100 percent sure that these deaths pertain to your Mary Ann’s parents:

Concerning Christopher and Margaret’s son Timothy, I wanted to see if I could find more information about him. As noted earlier I looked for his birth index and baptism record at Ancestry.com and the FreeBMD websites, but was unsuccessful in the search. The 1891 census lists his age as 15, which places his year of birth circa 1876.

I found the person who may be Christopher and Margaret’s son Timothy in the 1911 census. This enumeration shows that a 38 year old Timothy Mars is an”Inmate,” in an institution called Southwark Chambers (Common Lodging House), located at 147 Tooley Street, London S E. The census doesn’t say what type of institution this is. The census shows that Timothy was born in Bermondsey, and was employed as a “Flower Hawker.”

There are several individuals in the institution with Timothy, but I’ve only listed Timothy and the head of the institution, or “caretaker,” and his family in the transcription below from Ancestry.com:

Next I wanted to see if I could find Christopher Mars in the census returns before his marriage in 1855. I located 14 year old “Cristopher” Mars in the household of his parents, 42 year old journeyman tanner, John Mars, and 41 year old Margaret. John’s place of birth is listed as Ireland, while Margaret and all the other family members were born in Bermondsey. The address of the household is 18 Hargrave Square, Bermondsey.

The oldest child in the household is 18 year old Mary Mars, followed by Christopher. Next in age is 9 year old Maria; 2 year old Hariet, and 11 year old Ester.

After finding the Mars family in the 1851 census, I looked for the baptism records for the children, as well as the civil birth records for them. I didn’t find baptism records for them.

Civil Registration of births, marriages, and deaths began in England and Wales in the September quarter of 1837. The September quarter is inclusive of the months of July, August, and September. The 1851 census lists Cristopher’s age as 14, which would place his year of birth in 1837, the year civil registration commenced in England and Wales. I didn’t find a civil birth index for Christopher, or Ester/Esther Mars, but located birth indexes for children named Maria and Harriet Mars. These indexes may pertain to the children of John and Margaret Mars, but you would have to order their birth records from the GRO to find out. Their birth records will also tell you what their mother’s maiden name was.

Next I located 30 year old John and 28 year old Margaret Mars and five of their children in the 1841 census, living in an address of Newnham Row, Civil Parish of St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey. John’s occupation is listed as labourer. The Ancestry.com index for the census notes that he was born in Scotland, but I think this was not transcribed properly, as there is the letter I written in the census for his place of birth.

All the other family members were born in County Surrey. The children in the household are 13 year old Anne; 11 year old Mary; 4 year old Betsy; 1 year old Ester; and 6 year old Christopher. His age of 6 in 1841 places Christopher’s year of birth circa 1835:

Thus far I located the family of John and Margaret Mars in the 1841 and 1851 census enumerations. I wanted next to see if I could find them in the 1861 census. I did find them living in what appears to be an address of 25 Gouldston Buildings, Bermondsey.

In this census 50 year old John is shown to be a tanner born in Bermondsey, rather than Ireland. His 47 year old wife Margaret, and two daughters, 16 year old Maria and 12 year old Hariot were also born in Bermondsey.

But I did locate what may be the death indexes for their daughters Esther and Maria. I also found the church marriage record for their daughter Harriet, as well as her civil marriage index.

Below is the St. Mary’s Church of England marriage record transcription for Jeremiah “Cockling” and Harriet Mars. It appears that the person who recorded the banns of marriage had spelled Jeremiah’s surname leaving out the g at the end. Jeremiah and Harriet are shown to have been of full age and living in Church Street at the time of marriage. Jeremiah’s occupation is listed as bricklayer, as is the occupation for his father, Bartholomew Cocklin.

Harriet’s father is listed as John Mars, a leather dresser. Both Jeremiah and Harriet signed the marriage register with an X. They were married by the curate, John Wetherall. The witnesses to the marriage were Edward Powell and Ann Miles:

Concerning John Mars, the 1841 and 1851 census enumerations note that he was from Ireland, while the 1851 census gives his place of birth as Bermondsey. Madeleine, you had mentioned in your query to the Ancestry message board that John was from Ireland. And so, circumstantial evidence is three to one that he did indeed come from Ireland.

In the 1841 census John’s age is listed as 30. In the 1851 census he is 42, while in the 1861 census, he is 50. These enumerations place his year of birth circa 1809-1811.

Many Irish parish registers were lost in a fire at the Four Courts Buildings during the Irish Civil War of 1922, but many parish registers still remain. The IFHF has not indexed and transcribed every civil parish record or church record in the individual member counties, as this is still a work in progress.

I looked for the baptism index for John Mars at the IFHF but didn’t find him. But even if I did locate the baptism index for a John Mars at the IFHF, I couldn’t be sure I would have the baptism for your ancestor, as we do not know the names of his parents, or where in Ireland he was born.

I then went to Ancestry.com to see if any Mars were listed in two land surveys which covered most of Ireland. These are the Tithe Applotment Books and Griffiths Valuation. The Tithe Applotment Books survey took place between 1823 and 1837.

Ancestry.com lists two men named Mars in the Tithe Applotment Books. One of these men is Js Mars, of Drumleek, Muckno, County Monaghan. The initials Js stand for James. The land survey was conducted in his area in 1825. The other man is the Rev. Robt Mars, of Morett, Coolbanagher, Queens County. The survey was conducted in his area of Queens County in 1826.

The other land survey was Griffiths Valuation. This was a property tax record enumerated in the 32 counties in Ireland from the late 1840s until 1864. It lists those people, called “Occupiers,” who leased houses and land from the land owner or the land owner’s representative’s called “Lessors” or “Immediate Lessors.” Both the person who leased the property and the person who owned or represented the property owner, are named in Griffiths Valuation.

I found that 13 men named Mars are listed as Occupiers in Griffiths Valuation for the counties of Antrim, Cork, Donegal, Kildare, Kilkenny, Monaghan, and Tipperary.

Another five Occupiers are listed in Griffiths Valuation under the surname spelling Marrs. All five lived in County Antrim.

By the time Griffiths Valuation took place, your John Mars would have been in England, but this record shows the counties where the name Mars and Marrs were most prominent, with Antrim being the county where most with the name “Marrs” had been enumerated.

I also have a sword from that person, He supposedly was
my great-great grandfather. His daughter joan,joann,johanna
etienne, not sure of the spelling, was supposed to have been
the grandmother of my great grandfather daniel jerome
sullivan, lived in denver colo 1910-30 as far as my research
goes. still have not gotten very far with this line.
joann etiennes mother was supposed to have the last name of
gautier. hope this helps you.

Mars from England and Ireland

My grandmother Mary Ann Mars was born in Walworth South London in 1867. She had several brothers and sisters. Her father was Christopher Mars.b.1837. Also in Walworth. I believe his father to be John Mars born in Ireland. Not done much on him as yet. There was a John Mars sentenced to death in 1816 for burglary. Finding it hard to follow up on that. Does anyone have any connection or information about Henry M. Mars found on the 1850 census Grant county Indiana Sims twp?
He is stated to be 75. his possible wife Earthly ( Mary) about 80. I believe they also are connected to a Margaret Moore found in the same household at this time and nearby in the 1840 census in Ohio- Margaret daughter Catharine eventually married Jeremiah Corey and listed maiden name as Mundy-

My husband's grandmother was one of the grandchildren of a Mars brother(Mars Chocolate). Story goes, she married a Robert O'Rourke maybe around 1904. It was forbidden by parents or grandparents because he had or had had TB, but she married him anyway.I have no dates or locations.
Robert dies young from TB and in turn so does his wife a few years later (from TB). My mother-in-law lived in Portland, Maltnomah, Oregon when she was a small child. I assume her parents live there too.She lived most of her adult life in San Fransicso Bay area.Anyway, her grandfather did come to her aunts' home after the death of the parents to check on her, Joan Catherine and brother Robert O'Rourke. Her uncle(who took them in) turned the grandfather away at that point and Joan never had contact with her mothers' side of the family again. Joan died in 1995at 83 yrs. I'd like to find out Joan's mothers' name. I have started a family tree on Ancestry. com. Its a shame how much history is lost of family members. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. This is kind of strange. As you see my last name is Hart. My Paternal Grandmother was Mildred Hotard. I have tracked ancestry through Euphrosin Hotard & Marie Celine Mars, on through to Jean Baptiste Bourgeois (circa 1700)--Euphorin's apparent maternal great-grandfather. My stumble came about with Matthieu Hotard--Euphorin's apparent father. My search has him married 3 times with two of the mothers bearing the same named children

One is Marie Genevieve Bourgeois.
The other is Marie Marquerite Marcellite Bourgeois.

The common children are Joseph and Rosalie Hotard.

Do you know if the two Maries are one and the same, or are they really two different people?

By the way, I have a complete set of books from my Grandmother that are all about the history of Terrabonne Parish.

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Justin, I know it's been 9 years since you posted your inquiry about Franklin Mars but I have just ran across it. My wife just subcribed to Anc. com and I've been doing a little research myself. First of all, we are certainly cousins and I know I can help you. A cousin in Nashville has done extensive resarch on our branch of the Mars family. Franklin was an older brother of my grandfather, Samuel A. Mars, Sr.. Their father was Wellinton Rainwater Mars, who actually married twice after losing his first wife during childbirth it appears. Thank you so much for getting in touch with me again. My cousin, Valerie, in New Brunswick, CA is working with me to find more of the GREER family. She found a marriage certificate between Moses Greer and Emma Rumpff married in Lewiston, Montana 8/6/1906. Father listed as James Greer and mother as Mary Slater (yippeee! Those are my folks!)
Would love to gain more info on the Greer brothers, Thomas and Moses who went from Canada to Montana. Thanks for your help!!

My g-g-grandfather was Joseph Mars from French Canada. Don't know if he is the one you want. He was an orphan living with his Aunt and Uncle, when he ran away as a child. I have no information on him until he joined the Union in the Civil War.

I have no idea what he was up to between tippy toeing over the border as a young kid and joining the Union Army. He was in Illinois when he joined, moved to Kansas later and then Oklahoma. He was in the Leavenworth Old Soldiers Home and is buried in the Leavenworth Military Cemetery but not in the prison.
