Hi Al,

Yes, I see now that the PA Mardis line is the wrong one.

I'm finding a Moses Mardis who was born 1761 in Virginia and married to Naomi Moring in 1791, and ended up in Union, SC. Do you have any other info on him?

Thanks,
Janis

Janis-
The Blount Co., AL Mardises descend from Moses Mardis of SC, who in turn may be the son of Moses of VA. The Shelby Co, AL Mardises came to AL via KY, but there is no good information on Samuel W's father, Rueben, except that he was not a son of William of Campbell Co., KY. I'm not sure which is worse - being descended from a Samuel or a William. Virtually every Marders/Mardis branch has a bunch. The reference to George suggests that you've picked up the PA line - no direct relationship.
Best,
Al

Hi all,

Realize I am late to the post — my husband's grandmother was Abby Vena Mardis, daughter of Samuel L. Mardis of Blount County (and later N.M. and Childress, Texas).

From Ancestry, I've found that his father was James Leonard Mardis, and I believe James Leonard's father was Samuel, son of George, though not sure if he was the same Samuel Mardis discussed here. Does anyone see a connection with my husband's Mardis family? I would love to confirm that some of my information is correct.

Thanks,
Janis Magin Meierdiercks

John Junbo Mardis

Hello, I decided to dig up some information on my Great, Great, Great Grandfather, John Junbo Mardis a.k.a. Babe and was surprised to see that others have a connection and have posted inquires. Unfortunately, they were posted around 13 yrs ago so I hope this will send an alert to someone. My Mom is Mardis Kaye Mitchell. She was named after her mother Mardis Bennett who was named after her Grandfather, John Junbo Mardis. I have a pic of him, some of his law books and one of the cabinets from the 1940s that he kept law books in. My mother told me the same that he lived to be around 102-103. Lived in Harrisburg, Ar. Was a Senator. In fact my Grandfather, currently a retired lawyer still living in Pine Bluff was married to my Grandmother, Mardis Bennett Jones. He told me about my Great Grandfather (3 times removed)was still in his showing up at the court house in his 100's and giving speeches. This information is pretty cool to have. I hope this helps someone. If you would like a pic , please feel free to contact me back.

Deanna-
My research stopped with Samuel L.'s children. I did not pursue the line to more recent times. You are currently in the best position to resolve this problem: you now have a death date and consequently can order a death certificate. You can get a copy of the order form from the web - Google Pennsylvania death certificate. It's possible it will include not just his father's name, but mother's as well. It should also list the funeral home and it may be possible for you to track it or its successor down. Sometimes funeral home records contain other family info. Patience and perseverance. You are doing very well so far.

So Alan the plot thickens. the 1940 census lists my grandfather living with Sanford and I finally found an article about his release from Western state. I recieved an article from the Nanty glo journal that stated he was killed Christmas eve 1941 near Saltsburg on his way to visit Sanford and was living in Pitcairn where he was employed. Connie sent me a link to Pa vital archives and found him . It says he died in Franklin township. How frustrated did you get researching this family? Now, Sanfords daughter Cora Fetterman lived in Pitcairn, so now I'm trying to find out if he lived with her. Also I found a couple pictures of Sanford and Jennie in the newspaper. My father had his nose. I know you extensively researched my line, but you found nothing linking me or my dad huh?

I have no desire to research the Mishlers, I think there are more Mishlers than Mardis's and I have my hands full already. I talked to my youngest brother Curtis about the Mardis DNA project and he is willing, however he is on SS so I would need you to pay unfortunately. How do we start? My other brothers can afford to pay but aren't willing, they just aren't interested. We are in Colorado Springs if that helps.

There are dozens, nay hundreds of trees out there showing the PA Mardis connection going back to Thomas of Westmoreland County, VA. I am still looking for the documentation that links Thomas Mardis of Franklin County to the Marders of Westmoreland/King George, VA. The trees that assume that connection are usually based on a leap of faith - the name is almost the same, so they must be related. Thomas (the First) arrived in 1676 and his son William had several sons, only a few of which can be traced beyond King George County. Does that mean there is no connection? Of course not - just no documentable connection. If one of your brothers (surnamed Mardis?) is willing, ask him to join the Mardis Surname DNA project. It's purpose is to prove which lines link to the Marders and which one don't. I'd be happy to pay his fee. As to the Mishlars, you're on your own.

My Aunt Barbara Mishler-Eller has an old family tree in which the Mishlers go back to the 1200's, and the Mardis starts at 1696 a William Mardis , before him is a Thomas Marders married to an Ann T from King George Va. This is the same tree that lists Sadie Cameron as Millards father. I don't know who made this tree, but obviously someone in the family , noone else would do a Mardis-Mishler tree. My grandmother married Charles Mishler after Millard died, so half of my cousins are Mardis's and the other half Mishlers. My Uncle Eugene Mardis had all daughters, but I have 3 brothers so the name goes on.....

I recently found the grandson of Frank Carney whom my grandfather was convicted of murdering. He was very nice to me and is going to show me the farm where the murder took place and where my grandfather lived at the time, amazingly both homes are still standing, but unoccupied. He didn't know much about the Mardis family though. I found an article that said they couldn't convict Harry Sanford on the counterfeiting charges because they had no witnesses to testify. Still looking to find out Millards mother

The articles relating to the Mardis gang are in the Indiana Progress still searching. I have a copy of the family tree listing Sadie Cameron as his mother with Curtis as father but no info on her parents, but I found a Cameron on Jackson township historical preservation site and he told me the Sadie in his family married a James Waddell and he didn't know of any Mardis connection. But Minerva Mardis , Sanford's sister married a Merlin Cameron. I WILL get to the bottom of this no matter how long it takes or how much money I have to spend.

Hi Allen, I printed over 50 newspaper articles and am looking for that one so I can post it for you. By the way are we related? I also found out that the blackjack used in the murder is in a museum in Indiana, was told that by Frank Carney's grandson. The Indiana historical society is trying to find info on the car wreck my grandfather was killed in, never found his obit although he is listed in a Nanty Glo page.

That's so true about samuels family. I read an old newspaper article that said he was the father of the infamous mardis gang. I assume it refered to harry and scotts counterfeiting charges. I was wrong about the census she is listed as sarah j gibson.
I believe Minerva's husband was Marlin E. Cameron, who died in 1956 at Johnstown. His obituary might give you a lead to connect with this family. See Johnstown Triibune-Democrat, Mon., Oct. 15, 1956, page 22, col. 1.

I'm not sure where your copy of the 1930 census came from, but Jennie is listed on mine simply as Sarah J. Mardis. I checked the 1920 and 1910 census and came up with Jennie Mardis. According to her marriage application she was Sadie Gibson. Her obituary lists her as Jennie Gibson. Jennie is a standard diminutive of Jane, while Sadie is similarly a diminutive of Sarah, so I suppose her proper name was Sarah Jane [Gibson] Mardis.
Samuel L. Mardis' clan is a sometimes perplexing, but always fascinating group of individuals.
I'm not sure that Harry was involved, 'though as you note he was suspected. Given his subsequent history of public service, I'd guess he was cleared. Eli Mardis, however, may have served time before changing his name and settling in Ohio. Winfield Scott Mardis died of consumption while still in prison.

I can't find any conclusive evidence that Harry served time. A news item from 1878, indicates that John and Scott were being held in the Pittsburgh jail and that "big Joe" was on trial in Cleveland, OH. John died in Nov., 1878 and may not have served time in the Penitentiary. Scott, as we know, died of consumption in prison in 1880. Samuel L. died in 1881. His obituary states: "The family name of deceased is familiar all through Western Pennsylvania by reason of the fact that two of his sons were for years engaged extensively in counterfeiting in Indiana and adjoining counties. Some two years ago, one of them, Scott by name, died in the Western Pententiary (sic) while serving a term for dealing in bogus money, and Sanford, who was accused of complicity in the same business, returned home only recently. Another brother, Eli, resides in the West..." Eli cahnged his name to Frank Miller and settled in northern Ohio, not far from Cleveland. Harry married Anna Miller in 1883. Clearly, Harry didn't serve ten years time, if any. The obit merely refers to his having been "accused," not "convicted." It is, however, ambiguous in what it means by "returned home." Returned home from prison or returned home from simply being away. On the other hand, newspapers at this period (possibly still in some cases) didn't always get their facts straight. An early report on the original arrests stated that Harry was a son of Joseph Mardis. I haven't seen any court records on this case, so can't be sure of much.

Great to find this message! Chicago huh? what is a Mardis from center Ky doing way up north?! Heard that Charles' children went in different directions. "Hob", who was Roy Hobson I was my grandfather that i've never met. He died as a young man but is the father to three: Mary Louise, Roy Hobson II and John Paul. my uncle John Paul is the only surviving child and still lives in Lebanon. His children are John Alan, John Paul II, Marie, Robert, and Steven. Roy II (my father) children are Roy Hobson III, Jennifer, Charles Lewis, Richard, Frederick, and Kimberly. Roy's (my deceased brother) oldest daughter is trying to do research of the Mardis family as well.

Who was Charles Mardis' father or siblings? i'm hoping to find out found uncle john paul but it has been a few years since i last spoke with him. I've met some Mardis' in Campbellsville, KY where supposedly Charles came from. There is a distance ancester of Roland Mardis who supposed to have come thru the cumberland gap in 1803 that we all came from.....

Hi Becky, I have seen the Wise name in connection to the Mardis name before and I believe I saw it on a Plat map of Indiana county. I tried to find the Mardis homestead which I did find on the plat map but last time I went home I looked for it but couldn,t find it. I don't know if it is even still there and the historical society was closed.

I will take a look at that. The Wise Family that married my Ethel Mae Mardis was from North Carolina, I believe they went to Nebraska with the land grants.
