I am trying to find a George William Marchant who was a Corporal in 1916. He had a son named Cyril Percy Marchant, born in Chatham, Kent in 1916, with a Minnie Betts although I'm not completely sure that they were married. Cyril's birth certificate names both Minnie and George, but on his marriage certificate there is no father's name. George is rumoured to be Irish but this may be gossip

Surnames: Marchant Marley Betts
Hi

I'm not sure that "my" George is your one but perhaps. George William Marchant died in WW1 in 1917, rank Rifleman and married to a "Minnie". I have no info suggesting he was a corporal in 1916 but it is possible. George was definitely English not Irish. The info I have read states that George married a Minnie Marley not Betts against her parents wishes. Perhaps she remarried a man called Betts

Hi,

I have further information since I posted that. Cyril's mother was called Minnie Marley, but her mother's surname was Betts. Minnie Marley's father was also called Marley and his wife was Elizabeth Betts. Minnie's father was Irish and her mother was half Irish. I think perhaps Minnie got onfused when she gave the mothers surname, giving HER mother's surname which was Betts
